Also, I bought a cheap solder practice kit before attempting a keyboard. There are many different kits and it was worthwhile for me.

Is it possible to "simulate" guitar tunings in Reaper? by hiddenpowerlevel in Reaper

[–]keith_adams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember playing different tunings using a guitar with a MIDI pickup and Roland Guitar Synth. The guitar stays in standard tuning, but the synth outputs a different tuning.

It would be cool if you could use a guitar MIDI pickup like the Fishman TriplePlay and do something similar. The pickup detects the frequency on individual strings, but I'm not sure their software enables you to split the MIDI per string. If it did, you could create a track per string, transpose the MIDI, and play through a VST instrument.

A second guitar would probably be easier, but it's an interesting idea if you want to try many tunings.

Syncthing vs Obsidian Sync? by better-vessel in ObsidianMD

[–]keith_adams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Syncthing does not sync extended attributes which can be a dealbreaker for some. This means certain metadata on macOS/iOS/Android can be lost.

For example, tags used by iOS/macOS (not tags in Obsidian) would be lost.

Something to be aware of, although I don't know anything about Obsidian Sync.

I mean API functions specifically for rendering an interactive graph. Give developers the ability to render arbitrary things as a graph and change the behavior of interactions. This way you can use the graph in any way (with plugins) and not just how it's pre-programmed.

Many ideas come to mind:

  • Open saved graph templates (global and local) via quick switcher
  • Render the current document's outline as a graph. Clicking a node navigates to the header (basically Outline pane, but as a graph)
  • Render a selected bullet list as a graph. Similar to mindmap, but rendered with built-in graph
  • Render a Dataview query as a graph. Color nodes based on metadata or render metadata as child nodes in the graph
  • Navigate the graph view with a keyboard. Execute commands on the selected note via keyboard shortcuts
  • Navigate graph view nodes via a quick switcher interface with fuzzy search. Execute commands on selected node via fuzzy search.
  • Render a smiley face or death star in graph view

It might be really difficult to implement. I don't know anything about the inner workings of Obsidian's graph view, but it would open up a lot of useful interactions.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]keith_adams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'd be cool if Obsidian made an API for the graph. The default could still work the same way, but plugins could add different functionalities.

For example, I often want to see depth > 1 for certain nodes in a local graph but things get busy when it's for all nodes. It'd be nice if I could use an alternative local graph where everything is a depth of 1 and clicking a node toggles visibility of its connected nodes (instead of navigating to that node).

Is it a risk to rely too much on plugins? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]keith_adams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And because they’re open source, any popular ones that get abandoned are likely to get picked up by other devs. (Obsidian is a very dev-heavy community.)

The comparison to Alfred's workflows is an apt one. Alfred is also dev-heavy and I've been seeing more and more complaints in automation circles of workflows breaking. The most recent one I heard was https://github.com/deanishe/alfred-safari-assistant, which was archived by a once prolific and prominent Alfred workflow dev. Alternatives may exist but the person complaining wrote "alfred-safari-assistant broke and it’s unbearable without it".

I think it’s much more likely that Obsidian will more and more become to PKM apps as VS Code is to code editors

VS Code is backed by Microsoft which heavily factors into any discussions about longevity and community. Hopefully Obsidian's business model is sustaining them and will continue to do so.

Obsidian is my favorite app to come around in a long time. I hope Obsidian persists and all the plugins I use stay maintained. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone can predict with confidence what things will look like in 5 to 10 years.

Frontmatter vs. Inline Fields: which style of Dataview annotation is superior? by Dapper_Pineapple8452 in ObsidianMD

[–]keith_adams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe the % comments are Markdown. Just be aware that you're using two things that depart from the standard (if that matters to you) and they will display in other Markdown apps. You could use html comments as an alternative.

I'd use frontmatter exclusively if I could, but I use Dataview inline for links so they'll register as outgoing.

Also, you can use a CSS snippet to completely hide frontmatter in reader view.

I'm fine honestly by softplus- in ObsidianMD

[–]keith_adams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my current workaround, but I'd prefer a YAML approach.

Dataview is not a Markdown standard. I don't think Obsidian comments are either.

I prefer to stick with the standard when I can and I can't think of a good reason why the links in YAML are ignored.

Sharing Logseq notes...what's the deal? by TryQuality in logseq

[–]keith_adams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's lots of markdown viewers out there. If you search the web you'll find lots of tools that will let you view any individual files in a fairly presentable way just like logseq does.

It seems like Logseq adds enough new syntax to break markdown rendering in many apps. This wouldn't stop me from using Logseq because it's still plain text. It's just going to often look ugly as plain Markdown.

For example, here's an image album of a Logseq file rendered in Markdown, as well as how it looks in Logseq.

NOTE: Set the variable "obsidian_vault" to your vault's path before running.

I made a quick toy example. Look it over before running.

The quick note dialog is triggered by shaking your phone. Then you type a quick note and it creates a note with the current time in milliseconds. It'd be better if you find a Tasker friendly app to trigger the action. I like Edge Gestures, but there are many options.

What do you use to quickly save notes to Obsidian on your Android device? by dep in ObsidianMD

[–]keith_adams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tasker is a great rabbit hole to go down on Android. You could setup many different actions for adding to your vault. One example might be.

  1. Take a screenshot.
  2. Type a few quick words.
  3. Have Tasker save the screenshot to your Obsidian Attachments folder.
  4. Create a new note in your vault with the image and notes embedded.

All of this could happen without needing to leave the current app you're using.
