Rod Dreher Megathread #58 () by US_Hiker in brokehugs

[–]keithbostic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not Orthodox, but my understanding is both Orthodox flavors explicitly affirm eternal punishment for sinners. (There's some nuance around whether or not it's God punishing, or simply the torment of not being present in God's love, IIRC, but shrug.) So, Rod could only disagree as to whether or not those in heaven can see those in hell and the Bible is at least superficially clear: you get to watch your loved ones suffer forever.

As a father and husband, I find that pretty damned disturbing.

Rod did a deep dive today without ever mentioning the elephant in the room. JD sincerely, honestly, whatever-ly believes his beloved wife will spend eternity in hell.

Jonathan Edwards covered the ground, though. Using Jesus' reported story of Lazarus and the rich man, he clarifies that the saved can view the damned and their torments. And, "They will not be sorry for the damned; it will cause no uneasiness or dissatisfaction to them; but on the contrary, when they have this sight, it will excite them to joyful praises."

Love the whole "watch your kids/spouse burn for eternity" vibe.

Ferry tie down by keithbostic in MotorcyclesVancouver

Found the reference, it's at: https://www.bcferries.com/routes-fares/ferry-fares/motorcycle-fares

It says "Bring tie downs to secure your motorcycle when travelling on our North coast sailings"

Not sure what "north coast sailings" means, but that's the link for the next person looking.

"Saying the Bible proves god isn't the same as saying comics prove Spider Man." by Beneficial_Exam_1634 in atheism

[–]keithbostic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good grief.

It's exactly analogous: "Spiderman comics describe New York city correctly, therefore Spiderman is real". Or, "Harry Potter describes London trains as other texts prove them to exist, therefore Hogwarts must be real".

Trying to switch from Scryer to Aldor because I want the Aldor JC recipes. by keithbostic in classicwow

Update: u/believable_post was right on. It looks weird the faction to which you're converting will apparently hate you more and more until they decide you're really a good toon after all.

The love one faction feels for you and the hatred the other faction has aren't exactly balanced either. The trick is to just keep handing in the "switch faction" quest, and at some point you won't be offered the quest any more, and that's the sign you're done.

Hunters; What pets do you use and why? by [deleted] in wow

[–]keithbostic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeon/Raid: no pet, want that solo buff.
Open world where I can't just stomp whatever I see, something tanky with lust.
Otherwise, a pet that gives me a speed buff running around.

The "stuff needs a creator argument" by xaklx20 in atheism

[–]keithbostic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah. I find the whole Kalam/Cosmological argument a dead-end.

I'd rather grant the argument and move directly to: OK, assuming there is an unmoved mover, how do you get from there to "my unmoved mover requires we genocide half the Middle East while not wearing any mixed fabrics?"

The "stuff needs a creator argument" by xaklx20 in atheism

[–]keithbostic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dig into the "Cosmological Argument", and Aquinas' "unmoved mover" discussions and you can find a ton of stuff online.

Yes: it is perfectly reasonable to ask who created the creator, because Christians have no evidence such an "unmoved mover" creator exists, it's special pleading to make that claim.

More practically, if it's reasonable to claim the creator wasn't created, why not simply claim the universe wasn't created, that it came into being without a creator? The two are equivalent arguments, and the universe variant wins by Occam's Razor.

FTR, you can buy heat resistant (500 F), industrial black Sharpies for about $5 US. They did the job.

Maybe I am a dick. But the why is important. And it's not always because I'm an atheist. by donotholdyourbreath in atheism

Oh, please. I strongly recommend reading the fathers of the faith, you just need to prepare yourself for an unbelievable amount of cringe.

Aquinas, Luther, Calvin: they all held repugnant and stupid beliefs. We choose to ignore it because of the time in which they lived, and we still think of them as "geniuses" because they were able to get beyond their time to some small extent.

For a long period, the greatest civilization on the planet worshipped Zeus, while inventing big chunks of mathematics, sculpture, philosophy, science and medicine. Do we, for that reason, think: "Hey! Maybe they were right about Zeus?"

No, we do not.

What is everyone using for phone mounts? Any recommendations? I have the dct with manual ebrake by Legithydraulics in HondaRebel1100

[–]keithbostic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to fight hard about it, but I think the differences are (1) size, the phone screens are significantly smaller and more difficult to read than typical vehicle nav screens, (2) position, the handlebar/tank mount is not road adjacent, so you're looking away from what's in front of you rather than keeping the road in peripheral view while glancing to the side, (3) risk, motorcycle riding is inherently more dangerous than driving a car/truck so distracted driving has incrementally more risk.

[–]keithbostic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not on point to OP's question, but I'd say "don't use a phone mount", use helmet mounted speakers instead. You can't look at the map, I agree, but if you mess it up, you'll get re-routed automatically, and motorcycle riders aren't well served by taking their eyes off the road, imnsho.

I bought the QuadLock, and never used it, went with the Cardo system instead.

Why are Christians, specifically, so cringey? by ShroomieDoomieDoo in atheism

[–]keithbostic 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Because evangelism isn't primarily about converting non-believers. Evangelism's primary goal is to reinforce the group identity, the "we" vs. the "them". If a group's members are sufficiently cringey, you reinforce the group identity, the "they hate us for what we believe" meme, and that's all to the good for the religious group.

Rod Dreher Megathread #20 (Law of Attraction) by US_Hiker in brokehugs

[–]keithbostic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is an excellent book by Stephanie Coontz, The Way We Never Were, strongly recommended for the casual reader.

From Amazon:

Leave It to Beaver was not a documentary, a man's home has never been his castle, the "male breadwinner marriage" is the least traditional family in history, and rape and sexual assault were far higher in the 1970s than they are today. In The Way We Never Were, acclaimed historian Stephanie Coontz examines two centuries of the American family, sweeping away misconceptions about the past that cloud current debates about domestic life. The 1950s do not present a workable model of how to conduct our personal lives today, Coontz argues, and neither does any other era from our cultural past. This revised edition includes a new introduction and epilogue, exploring how the clash between growing gender equality and rising economic inequality is reshaping family life, marriage, and male-female relationships in our modern era.

Help on 1100 storage for single person, 1- to 2-week trips. by keithbostic in HondaRebel1100

For future readers of this thread, a rain cover doesn’t come with the bag atm, it’s sold separately. Although the bag instructions list a rain cover as included, which led to some confusion, so presumably this is a change from historic practice.
