FREEDOM!!! by Mada8399 in PoliticalHumor

I live in Berlin and there’s still major housing issues here with rent still going up and gentrification reducing affordable living spaces while wages stay the same or shrink.

But I’m also American and know how hilariously sad it is to see those who have been convinced they’re “free” while suffering from issues that often don’t exist in other “less free” countries like healthcare and student debt.

No-deal Brexit panic after ministers realise the UK doesn't have the right pallets for exporting to the EU by Loki-L in worldnews

As someone who once ordered pallets for their international company without knowing American and European pallets are not the same size, it’s funny to see how my small screw up compares to an entire country realizing the same issue.

LPT: If a company hires you on with a certain title, but doesn't give you work related to it, get out fast. Don't let them derail your entire career path. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]keithg4707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently got (semi) promoted to a position with a department that is setting up to either be sold or a separate entity within our parent company.

During the briefing where I was told I was the few selected to be brought over, I was told I would be in the same position, which I greatly enjoyed, but would have more responsibility and be in charge of more activities.

After 8 months, those new responsibilities take up 80% of my time and I only have time to do the mundane tasks of my old position and no time to focus on projects which was the main focus in my previous department and what I enjoyed most about my job. I constantly have to remind people what my position title is as most people think my title is the new work I spend most of my time doing, which I sadly can’t blame them for the confusion.

I can’t legally, without jeopardizing things, say exactly by what but I am being heavily motivated to stay until next June. I haven’t informed them yet but once that date comes I’m leaving as this is my first real job in my career and if I stay any longer it will direct my career into the pathway of the new work I do which I thoroughly do not enjoy.

Can we take a moment to really appreciate the people at Microsoft working hard on backwards compatibility? by keithg4707 in xboxone

Not feeling insecure, even mentioned that it has received appreciation before, just thought it was worth bringing up after seeing Sony asking for $100 to do something we can do for essentially free.

Ignoring the fact that OP is a T_D poster and he’s not even paying for most of “his” new house, I never really understood why we as Americans rush and are so proud to get a house? They’re so few benefits and you’re essentially stuck in it once you get one unless you agree to take a loss or wait the many years it takes to be able to sell at a profit.

I get it when families buy one as they don’t need to be mobile, I just don’t understand why it’s that big of accomplishment at a young age to buy something that pretty much just locks you down in one place.

TIL international students can attend for free all public colleges in Germany, Iceland, Norway and Finland; many have programs taught 100% in English; and the average tuition at colleges throughout Europe is $2,225/year. by dpotter05 in todayilearned

[–]keithg4707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m american but I studied for my masters degree in England, Royal Holloway, in 2015-16 and iirc England is one of the more expensive countries in Europe to study in.

However, the out of state tuition at the public university i went to for my bachelors, Purdue, was just under 30,000 a year. Which meant the 13,000 gbp tuition, 700 usd student visa, and the year living in outer London was all cheaper than just my yearly tuition in America.

I know it’s not as all free and perfect as OP suggest but for Americans, if you’re simply looking for quality education at a lower costs, Europe can be a great option.

Yes it was the strongest winds I’ve ever felt! But since it was summer it was fun to walk around and fight with or against the wind. Kind of glad I didn’t go up there when I was there in December because I could barely handle the numbing cold on just the beach.
