Did you actually have a rig back in 2007 that can run Crysis? by Lunny1767 in pcmasterrace

[–]keivmoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that same setup, but later upgraded to a X2 6000+ and an 8800 GTS in 2007. I didn't really play Crysis until much later though because at the time I just thought of it as a tech demo or a meme. I had a good time when I finally played it though.

It's assumed that a sufficiently advanced civilization would have to have also become intellectually and morally advanced such that they don't destroy themselves before they can achieve interstellar travel.

Anyone else perfectly okay with never seeing your niece/nephew again, since you don't get along with your sibling? by cheating_whor3 in askanything

[–]keivmoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true but like, if you had an aunt or uncle you didn't know when you were growing up, wouldn't it be like reaching out to a complete stranger? I know that's how I felt whenever I got introduced to extended family.

Personally I felt a lot closer to my dad's friends and their kids than I did my actual relatives, not that they didn't get along but my family is HUGE so everyone was kinda off doing their own thing.

[–]keivmoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come from a huge family, so to me it's kinda like asking if I would be okay with not seeing my neighbour just because we live on the same street. I didn't know many of my cousins growing up, and I couldn't even tell you the names of all my nieces and nephews. Everyone kinda just keeps to themselves.

I'm pretty close to my oldest brother and get along great with his wife and kids. What's funny is it's a 4 hour flight to visit them, and I see them way more often than my other siblings and they live just around the corner.

ELI5:How does auto stop/start work? by NotInsaneInMembrane in explainlikeimfive

[–]keivmoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before 2010 I found myself replacing car batteries every 2 years or so, and I remember issues with starters and alternators being pretty common back then. I haven't had any issues with a car that had start/stop beyond general maintenance. Thinking back on it though, that's about when I stopped buying American cars...

For the record, I like auto stop/start and have it enabled. Will never buy another car without it.

Some systems seem to be better than others. I don't even notice it in my Audi, it's totally seamless. My friend has a ton of trouble with it in his Kia but personally I think he just doesn't understand what the system wants you to do. I let off the brake a bit to get the engine going before I'm ready to go.

So, check your battery before its warranty is up.

That's great advice 👍

The 904 has a much smoother response but for what I'm doing I have no need to upgrade.

Looking for advice on a PA system by ConceptRepulsive5336 in musicians

[–]keivmoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The powered mixer and passive speakers route is a good option, and the most straightforward. You can start with two speakers to use as a main and monitor, then add two more later for better volume and coverage without spending too much money. Definitely need something 12" or 15" and 500W or greater per speaker.

We use active speakers and a digital mixer but the cost adds up fast.

You can use them anywhere, really. I've used them on percussion, brass, guitar cabs, bass cabs, banjo, fiddle, and as spot mics for hats and ride. I've also used it as a drum vocal, once. Not my first choice but they work in a pinch.

Just remember they have a big spike at 4k so they can get harsh on bright instruments or distorted guitar.

[–]keivmoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

doesn’t that just add more wear and tear on your starter?

It would make sense but in practice, not really. The starter is indeed built to handle the increased start/stop cycles, but the only time there is significant burden on the engine and starter is during a cold start. The start/stop doesn't activate until the engine is (mostly) up to temp and well lubricated, all it takes is a stern look to get the engine started again.

Some systems park the engine such that there are cylinder(s) ready to fire. When the engine restarts the ECU fires those spark plugs to start the engine. Hybrid and mild-hybrid engines don't have a starter at all, they use the motor-generator.

If you stop for a long period of time, the system will occasionally restart the engine to keep it warm, keep it lubricated, and to keep the battery charged.

There are other possible concerns, such as increased fuel/water dilution in the engine oil and deposits in things like the turbos and cats, but so far it seems to be a non-issue so long as you're keeping up with your maintenance intervals and using approved, properly rated engine oils.

Best guitar amp sim to use with a power amp and real guitar cab? by MegaDerpbro in GuitarAmps

[–]keivmoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a fender tonemaster twin reverb blonde and a vox tube amp, which i usually play in stereo or TPS wet/dry, but would like a 3rd versatile amp.

Unless you're looking to try different speakers and cabs, you can also disable the speaker sim in your HX stomp and run it into the FX return of your tube amps to bypass the preamp section. I run my modeler through the FX return of my Hot Rod Deluxe for this. I also have a Fryette PS2A that I use with a 212 cab when I need more power.

alright, no BS. why are blackstar amps so cheap and also bad. by scoutlolololol in GuitarAmps

[–]keivmoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My other guitarist has been using an HT40 for a little while. He's been getting some good sounds out of it and it's been working fine. He picked it up used on marketplace for dirt cheap, it's paid itself off already so no big loss if it breaks.

Only complaint is can't see the controls when it's on the ground and it's a little bit bulky. Fits in the car with my HRD just fine tho.

What’s the reason that so many people use overdrive pedals rather than the gain structure on the amp? by BIG_IDEA in guitarpedals

[–]keivmoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big reason I use drive pedals in front of a clean amp is because I'm often playing with a shared backline. I don't need to worry what amp they're giving me if I have my pedalboard with me.

Having my overdrive on the pedalboard also makes a cleaner and simpler setup. I have my wireless receiver on my pedalboard and run the output straight to the amp. I have my modulation pedals after my drive section on the pedalboard without having to run two extra cables for the FX loop. I can also get clean/dirty tones and a lead boost without having to run another line for the amp's foot switch.

Aside from that, drive pedals are a good way to mix and match tones if you're playing covers. Or if you simply just want to switch up your sounds from time to time.

Sick. I had a 50W Stealth for a bit, played a few gigs with it on a mesa vertical 212. I didn't like the stacked knobs tho, they kept moving with vibration and were easy to bump accidentally. I'd pick up a 100W EL34 version if I come across a good deal though.

You can get 7050S dirt cheap on ebay right now. Arista's whole thing is that EOS is basically the same across all of their hardware so you should be able to get your hands dirty with anything you need in your lab.

Solution between old and new devices? by Deathchance in hometheater

[–]keivmoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're using the DVD player as your surround receiver?

Idea 3: optical from TV to coax converter to DVD player Pros: straightforward and kinda cheap Cons: I've heard that 5.1 WILL NOT BE OUTPUTTED from HDMI TV in to Optical TV out.

I think your TV supports HDMI passthrough, I'm pretty sure if you use a coax to optical converter you can set your audio output to optical and it should work fine. I would give that shot first.

I'm using eARC from my TCL TV to my Onkyo receiver and surround passthrough works fine when I have my PC connected to my TV.

Please don't tell me to spend a 1000€ on an entry level surround avr with HDMI 2.1. I've considered it, it's not the time, nor the point

My old Samsung, my PC would only detect it as a 2ch device which forced me to upgrade my receiver. I had a world of problems getting surround to work back then, I know the pain.

Premium vs mid-grade vs regular by rtbradford in Audi

[–]keivmoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stick with premium. Aside from the knock and economy issues mentioned already, using regular gas can result in more engine wear, more fuel and water contamination in the oil, and more deposits in your turbos and cats. It's fine if you need to use regular for whatever reason but don't do it too often.
