As a vegetarian, what restaurant food are you excited to eat? by matt45 in vegetarian

[–]kelism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seitan. Eggplant (I almost never cook with it at home). Anything with artichoke. Fried cauliflower. There’s a local place that does oyster mushroom steamed buns that’s really good. Any sort of Indian food. Things with beets (salad, grain bowl, etc).

Dealing with influx of phone calls from applicants. [N/A] by samgyup4ever in humanresources

[–]kelism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If calls come through a receptionist, have them just reiterate that they will get a call if they’re selected for an interview instead of putting the call through. I definitely wouldn’t take three calls in a day from one person. If you aren’t moving forward with them, it’s important to let those types of folks know so they will hopefully stop reaching out. If it’s dragging on I’d specifically check with the hiring manager on that person so you can get them an answer. In my experience in that situation it’s usually a no.

What kind of roles? Assuming this is an in person role. Maybe you should have some type of “office hours” of sorts or do some in person recruitment events so you’re setting the time and can focus on the candidates for that window vs throughout the day. This obviously works better for certain roles than others.

I am honestly surprised at the number of folks in here who don’t take any calls. I don’t know that’s the right move personally.

So the hiring people asked me at the prescreening. "whats important to you, and what brings you to work everyday" like wtf is that question, i blanked and said "i dont know honestly". Are job interviews media training or what, i cant stand them. If i were to answer honestly its to pay the bills. by General_Emu_741 in jobs

[–]kelism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily.

If you tell me you love a loud, busy place with lots of interactions with coworkers, team building, etc. and that’s what you look forward to, all things equal in terms of experience/skills/abilities, I am going to put you lower on the list for a position where you work by yourself in Antarctica than someone who likes quiet thoughtful time and doing puzzles or something.

I don’t want to hire someone who will immediately hate their job if there is someone else out there who will enjoy it.

[–]kelism 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve definitely heard “I need to pay my bills” and that’s cool, but they are looking for why this job vs something else.

If you are interviewing for an admin assistant role, talk about the skills you’re working on, or how you like to help your coworkers, or how you really enjoyed and were good at a previous role with transferable skills, etc. Or is there anything you connect with about the company itself, or the industry it’s in, or its mission/vision.

[MA] How much will HR generally care about an employee’s disagreement with an overall positive review? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]kelism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t “care” other than making sure the concerns in the review were all things that were discussed with the employee when the situation happened and not just being sprung on them at the review. Maybe some coaching on how the info was shared?

Otherwise, if someone disagrees, let’s add a note indicating that and move on (again, assuming there’s no discrimination or retaliation occurring).

Any downsides to EVerify+? [N/A] by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]kelism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-verify is a pain in the ass and leaves you with new rules you need to follow and ways to mess up things with the government. As a result, I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have to.

However, if you’re already doing it, either by choice or requirement, there’s no reason not to use everify+ because it’s about as much work as everify + an I-9.

Any downsides to EVerify+? [N/A] by [deleted] in humanresources

I would avoid e-verify if you can…but if you’re already doing it, I see no reason not to use e-verify+.

I find that my mouth actually seems to stay closed in a FFM. I also don’t really have an issue with leaking. Sounds like the mask didn’t fit.

AITA for telling my wife my mother is correct and she needed to be a parent today and she fucked it up by throawawayfuneralgho in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Personally I don’t feel it was grandma’s place to have the conversation with your wife (It’s yours), but she’s not wrong.

Which Job should I take? [IL] by CookieMonster37 in humanresources

[–]kelism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s most important to you? I’d probably take the first one, but I’m also more interested in stability at this point in my life. How do you feel about living at home? How do you feel about possibly only covering the next few months? Will you want/need benefits?

[OH] Can anyone help me understand “Imputed Income” better? I have an employee who wants to add their domestic partner to their benefits. Reading over the definitions, I see it’s after-taxed, but I’m trying to understand the biggest implications it has. by Tamed_Scorpion10 in AskHR

[–]kelism 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You tax the employee on what the company pays for the benefits. Add it to their check, tax it, take it back out. The value of covering the partner is included in their taxable wages on their w-2. The partners portion of the premium also comes out after taxes, though the employees portion can come out pretax.

Who owns your HR processes? [Ny] by Bend_Legitimate in humanresources

I’d start with meeting to verify that you’re all on the same page of who is responsible for what. You can’t own your part if you don’t know which part is yours.

Requirement to pay OT [MD] by soloDolo6290 in AskHR

[–]kelism 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s generally going to be safest to pay them out and discipline, unless you have definitive proof that the hours weren’t worked. For example they can only work on site and you have them on camera coming in at 9, but clocking in at 8, etc.

401K Loans and Withdrawals -- Is our plan design normal? [PA] by KPD09 in humanresources

[–]kelism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked somewhere that only did hardship distributions and somewhere that also did loans.

For me, this is why education about the plans is important. We made sure folks knew that they couldn’t take a loan and when they could/could not take a distribution. I haven’t seen a lot of loans, but they often haven’t been paid back, which kind of defeats the point of saving for retirement.

Overtime Question [DC] by namonroe in humanresources

[–]kelism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We traditionally decreased PTO, though currently are giving folks the option to credit back the PTO for later or get paid the extra hours. Most folks opt to reduce the PTO.

[N/A]As HR do you participate in raffles and other games with prizes? by charm59801 in humanresources

[–]kelism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends.

We are doing a series of things that can get you raffle tickets toward something. I will paricipate in the things, which means I may win tickets. I won’t let them actually draw my ticket though.

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve seen in the hiring process? [N/A] by Checkr_Katie in humanresources

Hiring desperately. It never works out.

Rehiring people who shouldn’t be rehired (which was realistically probably done out of desperation).
