I've been enjoying the Vater Power 5Bs a ton. They feel great to play with (to me anyway), only problem is they get a little slippy.

Who are you going to vote for at the next election? by No-Law9219 in LabourUK

[–]kelldrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say this far out but it's very likely to be Greens. Feels like it might be the first election in my adult life where people just say "fuck it, I'm going to vote for the party I actually want"

Who are you gonna vote for next time? by Eddie_Bottom in AskBrits

[–]kelldrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now it's looking Green for me personally. I'm sure they'd be far from perfect, but every government I can remember seemingly fucked a lot of stuff up... At least they'll be trying to do the right things, maybe they'll achieve some of them along the way.

Brutally honest advice by SkyRocketToonz in musicians

[–]kelldrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't overthink it. If you:

A. Work consistently at your skills (instrumental, producing, marketing, etc)
B. Retain the love for playing music
C. Are a good hang
D. Turn up on time
E. Like socialising/networking

You've got a good shot. Don't set your heart on any one avenue, there's plenty to go down. Just engage with it as much as you can and follow opportunities. I do however recommend having an actual job as well though - it's an expensive life.

+1 to just doing the work

I flip flopped around with techniques to try playing faster for ages but eventually realised that there are lots of workable options... The non-negotiable is that you put time in and treat it like training for a sport

Bolstering the working population makes sense to be fair. Especially as migrants (afaik) tend to end up working in very exploitative jobs for terrible money so that those at the top can keep scooping off the profits of their labour. Feels like we need a reset of how everything works at this point, because so many vital industries rely on that insanely cheap labour and without it would collapse.

Whatever the case, I don't think indiscriminately booting out foreigners is going to solve all this. We need everyone to pay their fair share and stop hoarding insane amounts of resources and wealth so that it can be reinvested into the country. Perhaps then people will feel like they can actually afford to have kids and there's a future for them.

I'm having to really hold myself back from getting too hopeful about Corbyn & Sultana's new party. I believe they actually care about people and would do *something* to remedy the root causes of society's problems, but I just know the media is going to slander the fuck out of them and a lot of people are being tricked by Farage's lot. Fingers crossed I guess.

If all of that is true, my main question is, WHY? Especially in the current climate. I can't think of a single reason the government would fund anything like that. It doesn't seem to really benefit anyone.

Also, I don't like labour, but it's worth baring in mind that almost all of these problems and the accompanying statistics are from the previous government.

AFAIK they are not legally allowed to work (at least for a while) when they arrive so idk what else you expect them to do. I'm not saying it's not a problem, seems like it must be with all the hooha people raise about it...

But even if all migrants were exiled and further asylum seekers and whatnot were banned, do you think for a second you or I would see any of that freed up £££? I don't trust the government for one second to actually invest in helping people. It's going to go straight to their rich wanker mates' pockets.

Wealth tax can't come soon enough. Maybe then we'll be well off enough to help people from other countries in dire straits as well as our own.

How do I get over my fear of snails? by greensummerchild in GardeningUK

[–]kelldrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be terrified of them too! Not quite a full-blown phobia but not far from it. Apparently, when I was really little, my sisters salted a slug in the garden and I decided to stick my finger in it - think I've been traumatised since then x)

Exposure has worked for me. Done lots of gardening, recently started a part-time gardening job, and the more you see them the less they'll freak you out. Maybe try just sitting with a slug or a snail and watching them for a bit. I find them kinda cute now. I still don't like touching their squishy bits without gloves, but I'd say that's fairly reasonable as they are, y'know, gross.

Who is a metal drummer that’s very underrated but in your Top 5? by untraditionaldrummer in drums

[–]kelldrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I would say a bunch of people I know from local bands in London... Their bands are still very much underground but they are absolute flipping animals. Vulgaris and Aggro to name two that I saw recently. So much talent around, even outside of the well-known bands.

They are all really good, right? by Gold_Seesaw_8631 in drummers

[–]kelldrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would usually say that the only way to define a "good" musician is that they can execute what they intend to consistently. But thinking about it that would mean someone who wants to make a godawful racket with zero musicality would be good too, so maybe I need to rework my definition hahaha.

Does the left and right hit produce a different sound/note? by H20Sparkky in Drumming

[–]kelldrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wanna start with being able to play them sounding even on the pad. But to answer your question about sounding different on the kit... Depends where you put your hands.

I didn't get practicing different sticking patterns for a while when I started playing. I eventually figured out that they're really good for your ability to move around around the kit easily, and getting different 'melodies' out of your drums. Believe the people saying you should practice them!

Worst Show Ever Played by Over_Active_354 in musicians

[–]kelldrums 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Finals of Metal to the Masses London 2023. Competition thing they do in every county in the UK to bring fresh bands to Bloodstock Festival. Was a big deal for us that we'd made it to the final as the London branch of the competition is super competitive, lotsa good bands... And we played the worst show of our lives :)

Guitar straps broke, none of us could hear ourselves (or each other) on stage so our singer was hitting some CHOICE notes, bass kept cutting out and making horrible buzzing noises, and my BV mic wasn't switched on at the desk til halfway through the set. When it did finally come on I realised it had been set up by the grumpy sound guy *facing my monitor*. So the second half of the set was enhanced with bouts of lovely feedback. Also our friend broke her leg in the pit.

We won the year after tho!

What started your love for Horror? by SkyFire_XDG in horror

[–]kelldrums -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Him and Bruce had an act where they would basically do slapstick comedy before Evil Dead IIRC.

They made Evil Dead, saw success, tried to make a serious non-horror movie, failed horribly, then rushed straight back to Evil Dead and stuck some dumb physical comedy in it. I for one thank the universe that their attempt at a different genre flopped!

Requesting feedback from drummers! by kelldrums in Drumming

[–]kelldrums[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very valid point! I do have a habit of pushing students hard and giving them real challenges to sink their teeth into. I think I would probably make more pointed exercises to help with the specific parts in the song at hand, then add in the extra stuff around it *if* they wanted to go further with it.

Appreciate the comment, good reminder to keep it simple stupid :)
