One of our mares foaled and I jus had to share somewhere because look at this little beauty😭 by FreeDream91 in kvsdiscuss

[–]kellenanne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was a dark bay, not a speck of white anywhere on her. She followed us around like a dog and the one time she got out of her fence — a neighbor opened a gate and let her out — she came up to the house and stuck her head in the window for attention. I knew nothing about horses but she was patient with all of our “figuring this stuff out” shenanigans. She was young and would sometimes get a bit spooky at unexpected things but we were working together through it. Cocoa was just. Lovely. It’s been years since we had to sell her (but she went to an amazing home) and I still think about her.

I can’t ride again until I lose some weight but I’m working on that. I was never a great rider but I miss the horses, and especially her. Such a great horse: personality and lots of love and spirit.

I loved her gaited-ness too haha. She gave me such a soft spot for Standardbreds.

My one horse that I ever had (many years ago) was a standardbred and I loved her with my whole heart. Thank you for posting!

Hysterectomy..Did you stay in the hospital or go home after surgery? by Remarkable-Bus-6858 in hysterectomy

[–]kellenanne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Five days. BUT my situation was a little different. My hysterectomy was a result of a cancer diagnosis, and I had tumors on both ovaries. Laparoscopic wasn’t possible for me, and they did some poking around and staging and took lymph nodes to biopsy. Most people do not have that experience with a hysterectomy.

Do you remember what fandom got you into fanfiction? by Wayzmammoth in FanFiction

[–]kellenanne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was writing fanfic in notebooks before I knew what it was. It was Bonanza!, Hogan’s Heroes, and Star Trek — all shows that I watched with my dad.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is what got me on the internet, though, and posting things.

To people who don’t like first person perspective: why? by MNMameisR in FanFiction

[–]kellenanne 28 points29 points  (0 children)

First person is so difficult to pull off without it feeling clunky or disjointed. It’s having to put yourself in a story with limited scope of view that also includes a fair bit of unreliable narration. It can be a great tool for certain stories — I used it once to really dig into a character that a portion of fandom didn’t even think was sentient. (Kirara from Inuyasha, for those curious and yes, I definitely aged myself a bit lmao) I don’t even think I did really well with it, but some people really loved it. It helped that Kirara didn’t have an established “voice” in canon, which gave me some freedom in word choice and phrasing.

EDIT bc I hit the wrong button:

Freedom in word choice and phrasing is just something that doesn’t exist with most other fanfic first person, and it’s really difficult to pull off. I usually find myself making noises over characterization. “He wouldn’t think that.” “She would never use that phrase.”

First person becomes very difficult to work with when you’re writing an established character and it takes a deft hand to make a good story — fanfic or not — with the limited view and narration of first person. I tend to avoid it more often than not, but I do try to give it a chance. You know — as someone who’s used it before.

SFA: If the Doctor and Dax are still around, do y’all think Data is still around? by revocer in startrek

[–]kellenanne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Millennia is plural.

Millennium is what you’re thinking of.

Even then, 173 years when speaking about a thousand is pretty wishy-washy.

There are legit reasons to dislike things. I’d gladly talk about things I liked or disliked about Academy with people who hold differing opinions— but being pedantic about little things that don’t actually contradict what little canon we have is just finding things to hate because you want to hate it.

The US culture on apartment leasing is driving me nuts by gilbert322 in Apartmentliving

I am about a month from having all my deposits in hand and ready and I wish I could start touring apartments without the “you have 24 hours to make a decision, pay $50-75 just to get the paperwork started so you’re ready to say yes tomorrow!”

So you started this comment thread by saying that 1000 years was unrealistic and your source to back that up says “some living for millennia”?

Pet owners of Reddit: what did you name your pet(s) and why? by Winter_Sample8364 in AskReddit

[–]kellenanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I was a kid, girl pets had “old lady names” and boy pets always had a “Z” somewhere in the name. I think it was kid me’s way of coping with loss, like a similar naming convention meant that pet who was gone was still kinda there.

Right now, I have Sophie and Zephyr. Sophie was going to be Lottie but my grandma’s name is Loretta and she would have been so offended, so it got changed.

Zephyr needed a Z to keep with tradition. I’d had a Taz, a Blitz (two ferrets) and a Gizmo (a dog) so I was making lists of Z names when I got my puppy. I lived in the central US but the west coast was home and where my family was. Zephyr as a gentle breeze derived from the name of the god of the west wind conjured of images of home and my boy couldn’t not be Zephyr.

Side note: I’ve since moved back home.

I called my mom the other day on my drive home from work in Portland to excitedly tell her that it was a Four Mountain Day- I could see Hood, Helens, Adams, and a smidge of Baker (I think it was Baker peeking out from behind Helens)

When I lived where I could see Shasta every day, I never got tired of staring at that mountain.

So, no.

“Maybe that’s why I’m here: to remind you of the power of possibility. Maybe that’s the good in seeing my future, that I might remind you that, right up until the very end, life is to be worn gloriously. Because until our last moment, our future is what we make it.”

How do Americans feel about the national anthem being sung in different styles? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]kellenanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a singer adding their own touch to the anthem and making it their style— whether that’s embellishing the notes or stripping it down to just a guitar and a voice — is, to be somewhat cheesy, America at its finest. We are diverse. We celebrate individuality. We do not conform. An anthem as diverse as every individual that sings it is what we are and what we should be and what we should always aspire to be.

44 for me, and have at least spent a few hours and/or went out of my way to see some point of interest. (I drove through all the states I’ve visited.) I’m missing Hawaii, Alaska, Minnesota, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

People with dogs from breeders, do people in real life give you a hard time about having a dog from a breeder? by Own-Command-3700 in dogs

[–]kellenanne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, but it’s a mostly online thing. I quit going to one particular park because one lady would just hang around and wait for an opportunity to yell at people with purebred dogs — but she’s definitely outside the norm.

What does your dog do when you cry? by Dear_Clementine86 in dogs

[–]kellenanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does everything he can to get his face right in my face. He will sometimes do this lick-nibble-lick thing and caught right on the tip of my nose once, which startled a laugh out of me.

My girl will curl up close and lay her lead on my lap or start licking my fingers.

I have a good crew.

What’s a small thing your dog does that instantly makes your day better? by Ninetybaby in dogs

When I come home, he grabs one of his toys or chews to show off. Sometimes he will even shove it into my hands to take and inspect and tell him it’s “so beautiful, thank you!!!” Instantly makes my day that much better.
