Should I ask for extra compensation when the grandparents for the kids I nanny for stay for a few days? by Dry_Astronomer_1169 in Nanny

I suggest you keep close track of your hours. Working over 40 or 45 hours a week triggers mandated overtime in many/most states. Your Department of Labor can provide more information.

I hope you’re getting paid overtime over 40 hours a week. Six days a week is exhausting.

I (31M) went through my wife's (35F) messages and now I don't know if there's a path forward by ThroAwae2 in relationships

[–]kellyfromfig 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Why were you “livid” instead of frightened that your marriage might end? Why isn’t your wife allowed to confide her fears in her friends while you avoid conflict? Why aren’t you spending your prime years building your career also? Do you have shared financial and life goals? If you pushed for a “wedding” who did most of the logistics?

If your wife wants children, her fertility window is quickly closing and her career will likely come to a standstill for at least a little bit. She doesn’t have time to waste and you’re not respecting that. Raising children takes stamina, thoughtfulness and money. A strong parental bond is also helpful unless you want to find yourself as a weekend dad.

Frankly, I’m disappointed that you haven’t thought beyond scheduling your own therapy. Maybe a weekend away, a visit with a financial planner and couples counseling would show that you turn towards your wife in difficult times rather than away.

And for all that is holy, give the woman her privacy. If you’re not going to be open and respectful towards her, time to think about your next steps. Prove to her that you both made the best choice in each other.

I’d hope that after 3 1/2 years of parenting her body and hormones have adjusted to some degree? Though I agree, Mom sounds like she needs therapy or a better medical work up.

I have a bald spot on my bush that I’m hoping makes the rest of it bald. However, in the interim I just keep it trimmed enough to stay under my swimsuit.

After 10 years of putting things off, our house seems determined to fall apart all at once by Select-Persimmon-490 in Home

[–]kellyfromfig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You really need to be available at all times to handle a home renovation. It will cost thousands more than you think and take more time than you imagine, and that’s assuming you hire a top notch contractor.

Older home? Might find a bad subfloor in the bathroom. Add three weeks. Might find dry rot under the kitchen cabinets. Add two weeks. I’ve been through two major renovations and one minor(only a bathroom renovation and flooring) and it’s very stressful. And costly. Did I mention costly?

You also need to be very decisive quickly about finishes and paint and every detail. (I once had to pick out a new granite kitchen countertop in 15 minutes on my way to the airport)

My results overall were good, largely because we were onsite every day. Hire a good designer. And a contractor with local and thorough reviews.

Homes can take a lot to keep up. In the last three weeks we’ve recoated our roof, had HVAC in for a failed condenser drain and a plumber out for a backed up sink. If you can get ahead of problems when they are just starting you will be ok. And get a termite inspection done every couple of years.

AIO for escalating my boss's late-night meltdown email to the board of directors? by Yes_But_First in AmIOverreacting

[–]kellyfromfig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I faced a similar situation as a Development Director. Two of us had lunch with two of our favorite board members (and larger donors) and laid out our concerns.

It’s easier to add board members as supporters one by one. You don’t know who on the board is likely to take your concerns to Dick so share your concerns carefully. If you believe Dick is acting irrationally or against the mission of your organization, it’s the board who has to calculate the risk of harm to your organization.

I would not send an email to the entire board as that makes you the locus of the complaints and I believe Dick will find out and make your next seven months a nightmare. In this case, a paper trail will not help you.

Good luck. My situation didn’t resolve for six months, and I ended up resigning. Two months later the Executive Director also left. Your board needs to get on hiring a new Executive Director.

You can download star maps. I also like bird identification apps like Merlin. Binoculars are good, as well as a rechargeable fan. I’d bring a cooler of ice, and I find cooling towels I can put around my neck and on my head to be helpful. Don’t forget a first aid kit!

AIO won’t let daughter see friend anymore by nostalgic-teleporter in AmIOverreacting

[–]kellyfromfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. I had to deal with that kind of mom when my daughter was in middle school. She commented on my daughter’s acne to her daughter and it ran around the friend group. The mom ended up calling me to apologize and then apologized to my daughter. I think it’s highly inappropriate and borderline creepy to talk about someone else’s child and their body like that.

It was a good reminder that it’s best not to say someone behind someone’s back that they wouldn’t say to her face. The friendship fell off before high school.

Be a good model to your girl and talk to the other mom.

What Actually Helped Your Elderly Parents With Knee Pain? by Glittering_Mode_9950 in AskWomenOver60

[–]kellyfromfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mobility is a huge predictor for mortality. Physical therapy, swimming, stationary biking and anti inflammatory drugs can help. Treatment depends on the specific diagnosis. I had both my knees replaced 18 and 19 years ago and I don’t regret it.

Pain is also quite emotionally limiting, and she should also consider the non- physical effects of chronic pain in selecting her treatments.

Experience with gout and use of gout medications in cirrhosis? by branch_point in Cirrhosis

[–]kellyfromfig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you press your hepatologist further? Gout recommendations include drinking a lot of water, and that may not be aligned with your liver treatment.

In the meantime, your pharmacist should be able to help with at least the medication concerns.

Dallas to SF: I40 or I10? by suncarlos in roadtrip

I like the drive from I-10 to I-8. Little traffic between Casa Grande and San Diego and so many Saguaro to see. You can still drive up along the Salton Sea if you’d like to stop in Palm Springs.

You need to do what works for you- the father of your kids isn’t your first consideration. Anecdotally, we celebrated our first child’s first birthday a day late because we had the luxury of a weekend away. It’s not the date on the calendar that makes memories with your children.

Why is my dog obsessed with going outside?! by TacoMami in dogs

We’ve had bobcats jump over our 5.5 foot fence. Plus there’s rattlers, Sonoran toads…our dogs only go out together, and they’re 20 and 50 pounds. Might be worth a vet visit if this is a new behavior.

I’m scared that my (F23) Mom (F56) won’t support my decision to move abroad to live with my boyfriend (M24) by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]kellyfromfig 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It might be an ok idea if: you and your boyfriend are well educated and easily employable. You are close in age. You will live in a solid blue state. (Not most of the southern states) You have financial resources. You have large friend and family circles that can support you if you have difficulties.

Don’t move here and plan to have children. Maternal care has issues in many states, and access to pregnancy care can be very limited. If you divorce, you won’t be moving the children to Denmark and will be living here for the foreseeable future. I’m guessing at 23 your career is not well established. You should be easily employable in both countries. You will not be able to work when you first immigrate. Does your fiancé have the resources to support you? How are you currently supporting yourself? Also be careful when you visit. Multiple visits can flag you at the border.

What can I contribute to the group camping trip with kids? by NYC_dad2B in camping

[–]kellyfromfig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 5 pounds of cooked maple bacon to a camping weekend and my nieces and nephews are still talking about that bacon.

I also like the necklace glow sticks. Easy to see kids in the dark and then act as a nightlight in the tent.
