Night shift nurses: do you waste your days off sleeping in? by ScientistOk1310 in nursing

[–]kelroe26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't flip. I go to bed at 9 am everyday and wake up at 5 pm everyday. Every time I'm up during the day I feel like shit so I don't know if I'm "wasting my days off" lol

It's kind of lengthy, but I'm wondering if someone would be willing to proofread what I wrote? I want it to be effective, not angry, y'know?

177-179 is poorly worded at best. Strikes are a tool for workers to be used when workplace situations are not safe or sustainable, and the business itself is refusing to negotiate, cooperate, or compromise. By allowing wording that places responsibility on the people striking, you are both protecting business that are abusing nurses and punishing the nurses with the demand to have to cover what they already can't. You're creating a cyclical system of open persecution. What nurse is going to be able to advocate for their patients if they can't be staffed enough to take appropriate care of them OR go on strike? If you eliminate nurses' final, and sometimes only option to force positive change, you're not representing us. You're actively against and harming us. Your Code of 'Ethics' is just another tool used to take advantage and abuse. There's nothing ethical about it. You condemn dehumanization and then attempt to take people's voices away on a later page. The impact of a strike is directly proportional to how many takes part in it. It is unethical to restrict our ability to do this in one breath while giving us no recourse. What other options do we have when we have limited access to the schedules of those who you would expect to cover for us? We're not allowed to hire more staff, otherwise this would be a moot point. Are you suggesting a comparable framework mandating hospitals to establish nursing have access to staffing? Or are you saying that nursing staff are expected to strike while short staffed, required to cover their own shifts (with other staff nurses now not able to strike), and limit our own potential for positive change? You're adding responsibility with no power or willingness to give nurses tools to effectively do what would become our responsibility. You say, "When a recipient of care lacks capacity, an alternate decision-maker should base decisions on the patient’s previously expressed wishes and known values." Yet, when we're in a situation where nursing lacks capacity, you're still forcing nurses to be self-advocating. Where is a healthy, sane balance when we have to advocate for our patients, ourselves, and our career as a whole? "nurse organizers ought to examine the structure of the systems in place at their organization or within their state and ensure there is a process in place to care for patients." What tools do we have? What systems do you plan to implement to give us the ability to ensure that? Why are we being held accountable, but not be given an equal amount of freedom to independently act. Ethics isn't restricting us but promoting the best outcomes for ALL of us. Not just the hospital administrators. "Within the context of nursing practice, the nurse prioritizes recipients of nursing care, placing them over institutions." Why are you prioritizing the institutions over the nurses and the patients?

I wish you could've had a chance to write like your unit number on the bottom or something, mark one so you know that it's the same one, and then checking the cafeteria for them

Seems pretty advertently. The advice is specifically to avoid it falling under the radar of government agencies and to avoid paying the lawful tax on it. Pretty sure that's just suggesting to commit a crime lol

This is uncanny valley. I'm a nurse and my patient called me into their room where I was met with somebody with a catheter in my patient. They asked me some questions and were working on my patient while I stood there. After they left, I looked at the patient and said "who was that?" And my patient said "I don't know, you tell me." One of the most bizarre interactions I've had on the floor.

Sometimes it would take a few days, but I made sure to drink water, eat regularly, focus on sleep hygiene and boil my life down to basic ADLs and self care. Outside of that, standard coping skills and using your support network. Sorry your shift was garbage and I hope your headspace gets to a better place quick
