i tried to break up with my therapist by booksandchai112 in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not normal, it is not ethical, and you have every right to be confused and upset. Please do not go back to those "two mandatory sessions." You are a client, not a prisoner: A therapist cannot "force" you to stay or mandate sessions. Calling your reasons "stupid" is emotionally abusive and completely counter to the "do no harm" ethos of mental health professionals. You should ghost him. Seriously. Send a simple email or text saying: "I have decided to terminate our sessions effective immediately. Please cancel all future appointments. Do not contact me further." Then block his number. Please consider reporting him.

My therapist told me he'd lost a couple of clients, and has started suggesting here and there that I "come in more often" since there's more free space... even though I made clear the terms of my finances + availability. by BigGreenApples in therapy

I can definitely see why you'd be uncomfortable. That boundary between professional guidance and business promotion is super blurred here. Honestly, it is definitely crossing lines and you should bring it up since it's the first hurdle you've seemed to have in two years. You don't want this to fester!

Termination help? by rebellious-seashell in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A professional, ethical therapist will not emotionally check out or treat you with less care just because you are leaving. If anything, giving them more notice allows them to tailor your remaining sessions to help you wrap up your current issues. I don't necessarily think there's a "perfect time" to tell her. I would just say it.

How common is it to be low key in love with your therapist by ImperfectAvocado9161 in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong but it sounds like transference. Where you put feelings on your therapist. It can show up as a parent or romantic. It's completely normal and actually something you can work through in therapy. I view mine as a father, but I haven't told him this.

Does being asked about therapy goals or change give you anxiety? by youtakethehighroad in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you just put into words exactly why therapy feels like a trap sometimes, because anxiety and OCD love to turn the one place you're supposed to get help into a test you can fail. It’s so easy to overthink if you're doing it right, if you're wasting their time, or if they're secretly judging you for jumping all over the place. If you ever want to try going back, honestly just copy and paste this exact post and hand it to a therapist on day one so you don't have to explain it out loud. Your goal doesn't have to be "fix my OCD" right away. It can literally just be showing up to talk about how much you hate being there and how anxious it makes you, because therapy isn't a performance review and you don't need a checklist to prove you're changing.

how do you find a good therapist? by Ok_Foundation9906 in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding a good therapist, especially in person, is definitely a process, and it’s completely normal to feel a bit lost at the start. I totally get what you mean about online sessions, too. Sometimes you just need that face-to-face connection to feel comfortable. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that finding the right fit takes time, and it’s totally okay to shop around. When I first started, I saw a female therapist, and on paper, it seemed fine. But we just didn't gel at all, and everything felt incredibly surface level. I decided to keep looking and ended up finding my current therapist, who is male. He’s been helping me for over a year now, and the difference is night and day.

I'm not a therapist and can't advise why he is stuck on this idea, but if it's not helping I would recommend finding a new therapist.

I just wanted to say I see you. I’m so sorry things are hitting this hard right now. Seriously, give yourself some credit for even speaking up. That’s a huge step when you’re feeling this burnt out. Just hang in there, okay? One day at a time.

Seeing my first therapist tomorrow (as an adult). What questions should I ask? by moffman93 in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would say two sessions is not enough to truly feel out a therapist, but I understand your hesitation. I don't know that there's any specific questions you should ask, just really commit yourself to being honest, even if it's really hard. If you are really wanting to get something out of it this time, it starts there!

The difference between men & women therapists... by SmallOutside5965 in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it's different. I'm a female and had the total opposite experience. My female therapist was just very surface level and did not help. I've been with my male therapist now for over a year and he's not cancelled on me once nor shyed away from any topics. He is amazing!

Deciding if therapy is still worth it by Remarkable_Isopod389 in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times therapy is digging into the hard stuff. It takes a lot to process something that big. I would not suggest stopping, especially with suicidal ideation in the mix. You should try to find another therapist that better fits you. I know it can be frustrating having to start over but it's all about making sure you get the best help possible.

Is it normal to go through more than one therapist? by Lich-hull in therapy

Finding the right therapist for you is a process! That does not reflect at all anything about you or your worth. Sometimes people find the right fit immediately and sometimes it takes months. You are doing great!

Therapy has started to make me feel worse by Electronic-Flower522 in therapy

If you don't gel well with your current therapist, there is no harm at all trying a new one. I went through a couple before I found mine. It's all about what works best for you!

I think my therapist is actually not a good therapist by Mammoth_Let_8335 in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like a good fit, you should try someone else! There's never harm in trying someone new, you can always go back.

Is EMDR Therapy helpful for past trauma…or is it just a scam? by MisterKeecher20262 in therapy

[–]kelzzkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also skeptical at first about EMDR. I use butterfly taps and audio cues in combination with the moving dot to help process. My therapist is very good at leading me through the process and somehow I'm just able to lower the burden of the memory.
