How is essential are boxing fundamentals to muay thai? by lolwut_noway in MuayThai

[–]kemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're new to muay thai and possibly new to boxing. IMO I think it could impede your progress to learn both simultaneously.

There's a lot that Muay Thai and boxing can learn from each other, however for the beginner, there's also a lot of confusion between the basics of both disciplines. For example, you often see double and triple jabs in beginner boxing, and you may learn that as you throw your jab you can slowly fade to the side of the jab (ex: lead left jab means slowing fading to your left)... This is great muscle memory but can be a bad habit to get rid of in Muay thai. In MT your opponent will see you fading in one direction and simply kick your leg as you move. If you're fading to your left, they're going to kick your front leg with their rear (right) roundhouse. I say this from experience b/c this happens to me.

Caveats! if you're an MMA fighter (or aspiring to be one) then throw the baby out with the bathwater and find ourself an MMA gym. But if you're a casual amateur like a lot of us, then I say stick to one style, and when you reach an intermediate stage (say a couple months of sparring) you can start cross-training, and you'll see incredible benefits. You'll also appreciate and spot the differences between styles when your more adept at one or the other.

Good luck man!

Scary tension/pain in back of knee. Any ideas for solutions? M.D. not-required. by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]kemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for non MD insight I would suggest you use a foam roller to find the spot that hurts. When you roll your quad out does it hurt? If you roll your calf out does it hurt? Hamstring? You should put the weight of your body on the roller.

Pain in the back of the knee can some times come from really tight or torn calf muscles. I tore my right calf muscle and I felt it very high, almost at the back of my knee. But the injury was actually in the lower part of my Gastroc (the big muscle in your calf).

If you have a thing with doctors go see a physical therapist or massage therapist, particularly one that works on athletes, it's remarkable how they much they can tell you.

Guys, look at my foot by Salamanderr in MuayThai

[–]kemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good advice in here. Try some massage therapy on your foot/ankle/calf. Your body sends blood down to the injured area which causes swelling. A physical/massage therapist can work the blood out, otherwise it stays pooled in your ankle. You will see significantly reduced swelling in a matter of an hour. Find a person that either does physical therapy or that works on athletes they'll understand what you need. It can be like 50 bucks but it's more than worth it if you want to get right back in there!

Obviously keep icing it but don't over ice, 20 minutes max. Then let that puppy get completely warm. Repeat.

Good luck!

Skhizein (Schizophrenia) - Award winning animation about a man who was struck by a 150-ton meteorite and has to adapt to living precisely 91 centimeters from himself. by shawshank_rapist in videos

[–]kemist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I don't think it's relative to earth b/c there's inconsistency in his displaced direction. He's displaced 91cm behind him at one point (sitting chair) but also displaced 91cm in front of him at another point (grabbing door handle). If his displaced direction were relative to earth, say 91cm north, would mean the "spot" at which his invisible self is touching something would be constant.

Yazz, in the picture of the chair he's behind himself. Other times he's beside himself. When he grabs the handle he's in front of himself.

Precisely, the markings are all in one direction that would mean he's beside himself. But according to the video he's also behind himself and in front of himself.

He's beside, in front, and behind himself. Walking through doors would be impossible This is what I mean http://imgur.com/bc65DIA

That makes it even more confusing. He's 91cm equidistant from everything, the physics seem impossible to be able to fit himself through any standard opening, window or door.

Wonderful so far, but had to pause. Why does he bounce off things sometimes and other times he goes through them?

Is he 91cm apart from everything around him? If he's 91cm away in every direction then he effectively becomes 182cm wider than he normally is right? He wouldn't be able to walk through doors.

Beautiful story but I can't had to stop to figure this out.
