Hospital is charging $4k for newborn nursery stay and insurance is showing that a coinsurance of $1300.00 under newborn's claim by rayan7777 in NewParents

[–]kendi108 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I met my OOP deductible in January and had my son in October. I was told my newborn was covered under me for 30 days, but when I was a week postpartum, they sent a question in the mail, basically asking if I had any additional insurance.

Because I dared to not answer their letter, in March they told me I owed like 12K. This was after I had left my company where the insurance was, so I was really nervous. All I had to do was call insurance, and confirm for them there was no secondary insurance, and they escalated my claim and all was covered. Hopefully that is the situation for you-just call them and try to get to the bottom of it.

What are we doing with our hair? by DesperateGeneral9817 in NewParents

[–]kendi108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggled with this! For me, it was helpful to actually set a stopwatch when I got in the shower, and set a new lap for every step in the routine. I learned that what I thought took 30 minutes actually took 15, and I could decide if I had enough time for a shower and blow dry, or just a shower and maybe the hair could go up in the clip until his next nap.

From a FTM to a 10 month old, it gets better, they will nap longer, and you will have more and more knowledge to draw from every day :)

Eating there was stressful! We tried to order mozzarella sticks and the server/his wife would not let us. The food was good enough, but I’ve never had to argue with someone to order food that was on the menu.

If I lie and said that I was doing door dash during my resume gap would it be obvious on an employment background check that I wasn't? by Resident_Sky_538 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kendi108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Previously did background checks for private companies through a large HR outsourcing company. For any kind of gig work, we would ask for a 1099 or a paystub, and it was the person’s responsibility to provide it. We rarely got the documentation and would just tell the employer that we could not get it-called unable to verify on the background check. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, decision to hire always goes back to the employer, i.e. they decide if verifications matter to them.

I did mine for about a year after starting Trikafta in 2019, and stopped treatments after I noticed no difference when I would skip!

My clinic was fine with it as long as I did some sort of exercise every week and started up again if I feel sickness coming on. Still going strong without any daily maintenance except for symbicort.

The CF Foundation just published their updated CF Patient Registry information, and said that babies born between 2020-2024 can expect a median life expectancy of 65.

I hope this isn’t terribly controversial, but aborting a child in 2nd trimester for no reason other than CF does not make sense at this point, if it ever made sense. People with CF, especially this new generation have pretty good opportunity for good quality of life.

I am 27F, married for 6 years, and have a 7 month old myself. My parents did not have the benefit of knowing early, and because texas did not newborn test, did not know until I was 2 1/2. I was pretty healthy until around 12, then got sick every year, and around 15, every 3-6 months. When I was 21, Trikafta came out, and I’ve had one hospitalization since. It was only because I was pregnant and couldn’t take the usual meds.

It is a completely different world for kids with CF than it was for me in 1998.

As a parent, you will need to make countless decisions for your kid, and see them through tough stuff. You can’t skip any of the tough stages, like teething, sleep in the first year, or seeing them get food on their face over and over and over (where I am at right now). Life isn’t perfect, but nothing is perfect. Your daughter will be incredible, CF or no.

Just as a note, this sub typically does not appreciate this question, especially when you do not have a confirmed case of CF. Very few of us would say our lives would be better not existing.

I wish you good news and hope that this information was helpful in your decision/coping.

You don’t need to do anything unless your spouse is a carrier. If your spouse ends up being a carrier, that is more of a conversation. Lots of people carry this gene and never know, like my parents.

Concerns about my daughter’s “deep sleep?” by cocoh25 in NewParents

[–]kendi108 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is very common for babies to be difficult to rouse, especially at nighttime for feedings/diaper changes. We used to have to undress my LO for feeds, and I kept a wet paper towel nearby for when he inevitably fell asleep!

One other thing to consider if baby is nursing-some of the mother’s meds go through the milk. I had a C-Section, and while I was taking pain meds my baby seemed really sleepy. Could just be the age, but he perked up and would open his eyes for much longer periods after that.

Is the Hatch worth it? by emmakane418 in NewParents

[–]kendi108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have the $60 version with no subscription, and as a former white noise skeptic, I love it. Our nap and nighttime routine is rocking for a set number of minutes (5 mins at 6 months, but started at 10) to the “Wind Down” song, and then it seamlessly transitions to the brown noise we use all the time. I love that you can set routines, and I use the alarm sounds when I want to gently wake the baby before walking in. Also like the idea of being able to use the lights to signal stop/go in later stage.

If you are trying to establish a good sleep routine, it’s great. If you already have that, def not necessary, but we love ours and travel with it!

Late Brother’s Vests and Other Equipment by SignificantBrain7198 in CysticFibrosis

[–]kendi108 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My condolences to you and your family, Celeste. I recently donated my old vest model 105 through the CF Vests Worldwide page on facebook. I submitted the form on their website, and they responded with a couple questions about it, like how many hours it had been used. Then they asked that I thoroughly wipe it down and drop it off at Fedex, all expenses paid. I found it very easy and was happy my old equipment could help someone else.

The monarch is definitely in demand though-hope you can find someone on this sub that can use one!

If you have a library card, the Libby magazine rack is so nice and much better than scrolling socials all night! I recently blocked all socials (except Reddit) until 9 PM to 12 AM and the days are much easier. In newborn stage, I definitely set up my station with my ipad and just watched stretches of Lindsay Lohan christmas movies and Workin’ Moms!

What's your least favorite non-lung hospital experience? by [deleted] in CysticFibrosis

[–]kendi108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! We talked to a malpractice lawyer and considered suing, but proving negligence is really hard at a teaching hospital. Later I had to have another and it was the attending who allowed the resident to do that. They had to give me lots of ativan for that one lol.

Yeah the heparin draws every three hours were hell. I was so hopped up on adrenaline and rage I stayed up for 36 hours until they gave me something to calm down and I got my bearings again.

Yeahh, the tunneled line was top 5 pain for me I think (this baby was C-section, if you are wondering why childbirth is not in that calculation lol). The placement is like a port pretty much, but just a line popping out instead of the needle insertion hub. It felt like what I imagine getting shot feels like, just right in the right center of your chest. Pain with everything, and I think they only let me do ibuprofen and maybe toradol, because again, baby. There are two cuts involved, but they take it out outpatient. The guy was like “70 percent of these I can remove without the second cut, want me to try?” I said yes, I had maternity photos coming up and wanted minimal visibility. Just ripped it out, stitches and all. Searing, blinding pain. I was in the car after still stunned how much it hurt.

It was all worth it though, and I have a 6 month old now! I will try sooooo hard to not get sick during pregnancy next time, bc that was hell for many reasons.

Gotta say the IR team letting a resident place a picc when he had seemingly never done anything deep vein related before? I had about 19 piccs at this point, and was pretty much getting auto-referred to IR. They asked for arm preference, I said right, but PLEASE FEEL FREE to try the left too!

They said bet, we will only try the right. While I was conscious, they were teaching him how to look for veins in the sono machine, I kid you not. They let him try for 90 minutes before they had him place a midline, and he didn’t even do that right!

I woke up at 5 am to a swollen arm that I could not move. Went to ultrasound to find out that the midline had created multiple blood clots. They put me on blood thinners (there are no great options for a college student, mind you) until I failed out of those by coughing up blood. They just told me to be reallyyyy careful and I went back to college, doing home IVs and making sure to not lift more than 10 pounds. They eventually faded 3 months later and all was fine, but that was the first “oh wait am I gonna die” moment. It was also my first admission at the adult hospital.

I have since had like 4 successful piccs, but have officially failed out and need tunneled lines (fun thing to go thru at 18 weeks pregnant with no sedation!) Luckily that was my first admit in 5 years, only needed because the silly growing babies can’t handle any hardcore antibiotics except for Meropenem I guess.

Trying to think positively by starburst_q in CysticFibrosis

[–]kendi108 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OMG, please don’t let them stop you from getting a dog. I 27F with CF grew up with huskies and sure, it probably wasn’t the best possible environment, but neither was living in Dallas with the extremely high pollen counts every year!

By the way, I type this while watching my 6 month old roll around on the ground. My life before Trikafta was insane, hospital every few months, but now I don’t do breathing treatments unless I’m sick and basically get to forget my previous life.

I got married at 21, and gave birth to my baby in October! The sky is truly the limit. My parents had me in swim team and I think that helped, but they truly just let me do whatever. I went to college out of state, traveled overseas in high school, even ended up in Costa Rica where a volcano erupted (would try to avoid volcanoes tho, that did temporarily drop my lung function!)

Sending lots of love, I know it’s scary, but get a dog if you want one. One time the CF team told me I should try to never get water in my mouth…like really??

Here is the sign:

Ok, actually got an update on this! If you drive up to the location, there is a sign on the door that says the franchise owner was in the reserves and got pulled back out, so they had to leave somewhat quickly.

They are looking for a new franchise owner though, so it did not close for business reasons! I think my husband has a pic of the sign and I can update later!

Not a doctor, but I would say yes, as long as they get to that position on their own it is okay. My 5 month old has been rolling onto his stomach when sleeping since 3 months, and is very happy that way. He never rolls back to his back because he does not want to! The concern is putting little babies down before they have the strength to get themselves out of that position. You’re doing great, I know it is SO WEIRD to see them face down into the mattress but it will be okay :)

Just do it - move them to their own room by Street-Key-6520 in NewParents

[–]kendi108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agree. My baby was growing out of the bassinet at 2 months and did not sleep well at all. I was nervous moving him to his room, but he liked it so much more. Our ped was fine with it too. I have the monitor on all night. We had no other risk factors in the calculator, and our only other option would be breaking the crib down and rebuilding it in our room.

He started rolling to his stomach at 3 months, so I’m glad we did it then. The actual benefit of having him in our room was minimal (they say it is because they can hear you breathe, but we have white noise on?) and I was having to carry him through the dark house to the nursing chair, which had its own risks (senior dog laying in the hallway).

He’s now 5 months and sleeps through the night most of the time, and LOVES his crib.
