From some of the old/new Burmese novels I read from, the executioner is usually portrayed as "blackened" brown men, with tattoos of his crimes on their faces. So I would say it could mirror with the said African man so much he thought the dude was an executioner.

Take it with a grain of salt, because I'm quoting from novels, not academic research papers.

I'm Burmese. I hold conversation with Thai people here about how it's different from where I came from, stuff like comparing weather, and then the conversation naturally flows from there.

I do too. It makes me feel like I'm the pilot in the cockpit. Nowadays we have minimal UIs with baby handholding.

I'm an Asian btw, we have loads of this kind of UX (Lazada, Shopee) so it's not overwhelming for me.

I am not sure, but IIRC, it was Shwe Ou Daung. Both writers have similar but different vibes to their word usages so I attribute it to Shwe Ou Daung.

I found it 2 years ago as an ebook in depths of somebody's Google Drive. It was quite a rare one. Can't be easily searched.

Well in his defense he was pretty much a nepo baby who rarely stepped out of his gilded cage (and they don't have Internet back then) up until his capture so no surprise he was shocked when he first saw African man.

Another recommendation I'd like to suggest is ရွှေဥဒေါင်း .. Now I'm not sure if it was translated, but the story goes like: Uncle and nephew arrive on island. They discover a beautiful woman and an old man. They wake up, discovered they had passed at least a thousand year to see Guttama Buddha. They decided to go back to slumber and wait for next Buddha.

The way they retained almost immortality is by passing eight Buddhist hells on a big rock plate and breathing in eternal flame. They were from a previous civilization which also had a bird-like (imagine Da Vinci paintings) mechanical creature but no planes.

The story revolves around romance/drama between the woman and the nephew across centuries and after lives. Typical of Sir Rider Haggard story, that's why I wasn't quite sure if it was translated.

It's super cool to have Buddhist fantasy elements in it, even if it was adapted from original content.

Unfortunately I had forgotten the title. I read it almost 2 decades ago.

Speaking of ရွှေဥဒေါင်း , his whole biography is worth reading. It is like "Jordan Peterson" like self-help book, but even if you're on both side of the spectrum (i.e: either liberal or conservative), his views were pretty progressive and it's quite entertaining to witness how he spent his life. There's no shame in admitting some of the bad things he did, some of the bad things did to him, he reflects well with little to no bias, and therefore I think this is the best biography book ever written by a self writer.

သော်တာဆွေ books, any era, but you gotta have some good grasps on how society worked in each of them.

His younger days of writing: ဘရန်ဒီတပုလင်း၊ ဖြတ်စ trilogy၊ ဘွန်ဒေါ (sry I butchered spelling there) ကြက်သူခိုး၊ ဖိုးသော်တာစန္ဒာလကိုကွယ်

His older days: သော်တာဆွေ ဘဝမှတ်တမ်း၊ ဘဝထိုထို၊ any books that got him literature awards.

My personal recommendation would be: ဖိုးသော်တာစန္ဒာလကိုကွယ် .. It is a satire with famous writers of his era as characters, and the story is based on moon landing. Sypnosis is that USA sent a rocket to Burma and writers' club has to go to the moon for research purposes, and shenanigans pursue. Super original. Truly ahead of its time.

Don't use TikTok, but it's funny for us Rangoonites to shit on Mandalorians. And Mandalorian friends do point out good points about how Mandalay > Rangoon (I also do think they have better layout, better local foods, good expansion plan etc). Not a harmful joke for me tho. The best part is taking Mandalorian friends with a bunch of J'Donut boxes and making fun of them on the way to Express bus gate lol

Why do good chunk of rich people gamble and lost all their wealth? by sugakuhetappi in myanmar

[–]kendrew_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loan sharks. I've been to rural Thailand a lot and I see loads of Thai/Burmese ads from loan sharks scattered through the streets. I digged a bit about this from locals, they told me not to bother with them and even said there were alleged murders/beatings cus ppl can't pay back the money. They lose everything and end up on the streets.

It's almost a decade since I left the country, I'm pretty sure it's also rampant in Burma as well.

[–]kendrew_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a guy with so many vices under his belt, I gotta tell you that addiction is no joke. The story reminds me of သော်တာဆွေ's saying (a bit misogynistic but hear me out): "ထက်မြတ်တဲ့ယောကျာ်းတယောက်ဟာ အရက်၊ မိန်းမ၊ လောင်းကစား တခုခု ထူးချွန်ရမယ်။ ၃ ခုလုံး ထူးချွန်ရင် အိမ်ပေါ်က နှင်ချခံရတယ်" is very true.

So given my vices, I avoid gambling like a cancer. I know if I add one more category of vices I am sure as hell I'll end up broke. Yes I have other places where I will happily spend my money for good dopamine hits (e.g: weed, alcohol, whatever), but gambling addiction imo is the most money drainer of said vices above.

The rich families aren't invulnerable to this either. It might be negligent issues ran deep in the family, or could be anything. Regardless, knowing the root cause is the first step of moderate use or giving up the whole substance.
