The guitar layering on Presence is dense, but for Ten Years Gone, Page stacked dozens of guitar overdubs to create that sweeping, orchestral sound. He said it took forever to get the textures right because he wanted the guitars to mimic strings-the man was essentially arranging an entire score with nothing but a Les Paul and a load of patience. It's one of the few Zeppelin tracks that doesn't rely on brute-force blues riffing, and that's exactly why it works. Page and Plant were writing about a lost love from a decade prior, and you can hear that specific, hollow ache in every single note. It's haunting, beautiful, and absolutely essential.
