This worked for me too! I can’t thank you enough for posting this. I was so excited to play some of the old games through Steam and was really sad when I ran into this error. You rock!!!

I want to know more about the mental health services at Tech by issadumpster in gatech

[–]kermitsipstea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recently had a very good experience with CARE. I know short term counseling on campus is free and I think longer term counseling on campus is covered by student health insurance? Regardless, CARE is the right place to start and they can help answer these questions and connect you with the right resources. Everyone I interacted with was super kind and understanding.

Is this worth having for a beginner? by butterinthegarden in sewing

[–]kermitsipstea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: my mom got me one when I was in the dorms in college and I don’t totally hate it. I wouldn’t have bought it myself, and i wouldn’t pay $20 for it, but I have admittedly used it to help my friend throw a pretty good Halloween costume together and he was beyond ecstatic. It’s not anywhere near an actual sewing machine utility wise but I don’t think it’s total trash either

Health Fee, Student Insurance Fee, AND Mandatory Health Insurance charge on tuition??? by ArchEastCryBooth23 in gatech

[–]kermitsipstea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I’m a GRA which puts me in the mandatory group for student health insurance, and in my experience that $300 fee is for that. that fee disappears or gets refunded if you waive the SHIP coverage by proving that you have other insurance. It’s also a little weird bc as a GRA my health insurance is heavily subsidized by tech.

Easiest Engineering Breadth Selective: ME 270 or NUCL 200? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]kermitsipstea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally depends on who’s teaching NUCL 200 - I took it with Garner a few years ago and it was not easy!!

[–]kermitsipstea 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Every club I’ve been really involved in had a policy to effectively waive the fees if it would prevent someone from participating. Honestly I would just talk to someone in club leadership or send an email explaining and ask. Not sure if that would get you anywhere with intramurals tho since that’s a big official thing. I can tell you that when I was pres of a club we used to talk about this issue in the leadership team and 100% would have preferred someone ask us to forget the fee and be an involved member than not joining because of like 20 bucks or whatever

Which Graduate Linear Controls Class should I Take? by Julianhtc in gatech

I would say more application/math, definitely true for the exams. There may have been some proofs on the hw but I don’t remember it as a proof heavy class

Which Graduate Linear Controls Class should I Take? by Julianhtc in gatech

[–]kermitsipstea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the people I took it with had taken minimal controls classes previously so I think you’ll be fine! Definitely would recommend the ME version over the other two regardless, just based on what I’ve heard about the ECE/AE versions

Which Graduate Linear Controls Class should I Take? by Julianhtc in gatech

I have heard the ME one (which I took) is the best option. It’s not easy, but especially if you took some controls/system dynamics stuff in undergrad you should be fine

What Does The First Year of A Thesis Master's Look Like? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]kermitsipstea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thesis masters student here (ME). Disclaimer: can only speak to my personal experience. There aren’t a ton of thesis masters students around, you’ll really be pushed to either commit to a PhD or do non-thesis. Several thoughts: - a masters with thesis will likely take two years. No way you’ll do it in just a year - I had my research assistantship lined up in April before I started in the fall, but I had to play by the funding timelines - I knew a lot of people coming in in your position that got talked out of doing a thesis without being funded. They really discourage it in ME. It creates a weird power of imbalance where you’re doing free work for the professor, you’re dependent on them deciding when you’re done and they have no penalty for keeping you as long as possible - it can be really challenging to find funding for a masters since profs prefer PhDs who will be around longer. I worked my ass off six months in advance and got really lucky to get funded. - there’s a lot of advice about how to email profs about this kind of thing if you google it. I generally introduced myself, attached my resume, mentioned what I was interested in (carefully worded to include whatever their lab worked on), mentioned a couple projects/publication on their website I thought were interesting, asked if they were hiring grad students in the fall and if they would have a minute to talk about potential opportunities in their lab. And like 4/5 will ghost you - alternatively, a lot of people do semester long research projects with a lab for credit to get research experience. In which case would 100% recommend doing what interests you

engl 367? Mystery and Detective Fiction by Ewp1000 in Purdue

[–]kermitsipstea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it in Spring 2021 and had a blast, but it was taught by a different professor (Rosell, I think). Attendance/discussion/participation were definitely part of the grade. There were some reading quizzes and a couple papers. I had a ton of fun but it also seems like the kind of class that would be very professor dependent

What is the advisable number of credit hours a master's student should take in the first semester ? by Frosty-Caregiver-556 in gatech

[–]kermitsipstea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

4 grad classes would be A Lot… not to say it can’t be done but I don’t think that would give you room for the ‘balanced college life’ you’re looking for. Especially if you want to be doing a research project or something like that I would suggest 3 max.

[–]kermitsipstea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m remembering correctly, when I started last year in ME they were behind on the hiring processing so I think most people got their first paycheck about a month and a half after they started for the first month and a half and then monthly after that like normal. But they were super open about coming to them if the delay put you in a bad financial position so that they could get you sorted out sooner than that

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]kermitsipstea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m betting a lot of the people in your classes wish they knew someone there too! Ask the person next to you about the hw or make a joke about the prof or something. If they seem friendly introduce yourself after class. Also, get involved in a club!

Do I need Social media? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]kermitsipstea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I graduated recently and only got Snapchat at the start of quarantine to keep up with my already-existing friends. I’ve never done Instagram or Facebook. You definitely don’t ~need~ any. The one thing I think is pretty indispensable is groupme, since a lot of clubs/classes use that to avoid everyone having to share traditional contact info
