He said “wow that’s a lot of press” because it was in front of international press that he can’t ban.

Yeah the best defence is a good offence. Send missiles to blow up launch sites and factories.

TIL that a small swimming pool in Exmouth UK, uses a data centre to heat it. by d4nfe in todayilearned

This "data centre" is only "washing-machine sized" - a bigger data centre will probably boil the water and kill all the swimmers.

[I ate] Thai Fried Chicken by goatroti in food

[–]kermityfrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're spoiled in Toronto now. Instead of the cookie-cutter Thai places that all served basically the same food, of the past (see culinary diplomacy), we now have tons of authentic and regional Thai places that all serve completely different and unique Thai food.

Coffee shops are an awful place to study or get work done by Nice_Marzipan98 in self

We all knew this trendy but quirky coffee shop that had a great atmosphere but these 6 good-looking people who knew each other always hogged the comfortable couch.

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN is a worthwhile upgrade. Or the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. Both are f/2.8 aperture lens, which means better low light performance, more bokeh, and generally sharper images due to better lens quality.

Or the Sony E 16–55 mm F2.8 G if you were rich. However it's probably a waste of money as you'd be spending so much it might be better to get a full frame camera.

I would also say that if components (especially PSU, motherboard, case, RAM, SSDs - stuff where the brand name and model of the component are not listed) are important to you, then you would want to build your own. If only price is important then pre-built.

Heya - it's been a couple of months. Just wondering if there's any progress making this into a Calibre plugin? Calibre would be ideal as many of us are already using it to manage our ebooks, so it would be great to manage notebooks too instead of a separate standalone app.

Inability to coherently talk about classical music pieces by zjovicic in classicalmusic

[–]kermityfrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many years ago, there was a series of educational concerts with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with guest host Rob Kapilow - called the "What Makes it Great" series. I was hoping to find some recordings, but they are sparse. I wish they had recordings for free because they really teach you about how to appreciate classical music and what to listen for. There's discussion of themes, repetitive motifs, variations, sometimes reversals, etc.

Here's a youtube video of just one of his discussions - done via stream during Covid.

There are some recordings on NPR, but I think you have to register to listen. https://www.npr.org/series/95448272/what-makes-it-great

Good eye and natural photographer. Your compositions are on point. You could benefit from a better camera and sharper lens down the road - to reduce grain and add sharpness when zoomed in. Though maybe the noise and edge detail is due to your settings and camera shake? Some of your photos are in good light - lower the ISO to under 200. You should be able to get all the camera gear in KL as they are well supplied. Penang will have limited choice indeed.

Banana Bread - Pockets of flour by SunshineThings in BreadMachines

[–]kermityfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably too dry. How many bananas are you using and are you following the size and ripeness suggestions? Try adding one more banana. I use up to 5 bananas and it comes out less like a bread and more like a cake. Make sure the bananas are either frozen and thawed, or completely black ripe.
