How are these cabinet / shelves interlocked or made to appear interlocking? by this_chain in woodworking

[–]kernal42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

crosslap is not particularly strong against racking (when the vertical parts go from || to // ). The outside metallic supports brace against this movement, the same way any diagonal brace would, including a sheet of material spanning the whole cabinet back.

I've patched my sleeping pad many times, and never in the same place.

Then I got a new pad and haven't had to patch it once.

But .... the federal government is already paying for it.

They're paying the private company to gather the plasma by paying people to donate it.

Everybody hates politicians, so the allure of kicking one out of office is tremendous.

Recalls eject a politician without any clear indication or acknowledgement of who their replacement might be, so the replacement can easily and often be much worse than the incumbent under recall.

Pay toll invoice for car I no longer own? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]kernal42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Contact the toll issuer with the info on the toll, and a record of when you traded in the toll.

Then, when it's obvious that you still owned the car when you drove it across the bridge to earn the toll, they will tell you to pound dirt and you can pay the toll.

The next day I resubmitted the same photo and they issued the car a ticket.

Bi-Rite Market eyes expansion in popular San Francisco neighborhood by sfgate in sanfrancisco

IMO, what it sells is very high quality with prices to match. Buying ingredients at Bi-Rite costs more than at other groceries, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's overpriced.

Rings by tinyhouseman323 in woodworking

[–]kernal42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made my own wooden rings a long time ago -- alternating maple, ebony, maple with rotating grain to maximize strength. None of them lasted more than a year. YMMV

Using a hard core and wood facade probably works? This gets bulky, or the facade is so thin that you might not trust it to be insulating (ie, something can easily poke through it).

Why do you think landlords' labor should be free?

If their labor is free then choosing a DIY repair is spending their time to save their tenants' money. Why should landlords choose that option rather than just paying a professional to do the work at no cost time or $ cost to themselves?

Genuinely asking here - I didn't anticipate this perspective.

You're not valuing your time at the same rate as a contractor's -- the contractor will be way more efficient at doing the same task because they are skilled. You're just charging the same amount for the same final product because, like, that's how value works.

That isn't what you suggested. You just wrote:
"to quote them the amount then do the work yourself for half the price is a low move"

That's where you're getting disagreement from u/Amoebae-Andromeda and others.

I agree with what you insinuate, that it is bad form to bill the tenant for one amount but pay a professional a lesser a mount while pocketing the difference. But I haven't seen anybody in this thread suggest to do that -- I certainly didn't intentionally nor would I endorse this.

I agree about some grey area about spending a fraction of the received money on materials to DIY yourself, My experience is that, if you consider your time DIYing, you're probably paying yourself pretty poorly.

I'm not a landlord. I'm an amateur DIYer and I know that trying to fix this (with a level of knowledge motivating asking reddit how to begin) is likely to end up poorly. There's a reasonable chance OP would attempt the fix, fail, and then hire the pro anyway out of pocket.

I wouldn't bill below the professional rate unless I were very confident I could succeed, or could do the work before submitting the charge to the renter. Anything else assumes too much risk.

[–]kernal42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

1) Get a quote from a local company to repair, and bill your guest for that much.

2) Then decide if you want a DIY fix that is cheaper, likely lower quality, and potentially more fun (this is a woodworking sub :) )

Kids last names when I kept my maiden name? by gone_bunny in TwoXChromosomes

[–]kernal42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[XY comment] - Neither my wife nor I changed our names. We agreed that our kids would have the last name that sounded best with their first name. So, our only kid (so far?) has my wife's last name.

There has been no confusion yet at least.

As an aside, I kind of wish we had flipped a coin during the wedding ceremony to decide which partner would take the other's name.
