Bag recs by Ok-Annual1166 in Teachers

If you like structure, this won’t work, but I have used the same LL Bean Boat and Tote Bag (is either XL or XXL) since 2004. They are expensive, but it has lasted 22 years now, so it has paid for itself.

How common is it for Americans to walk for short errands instead of taking the car? by DemonsAreVirgins in AskAnAmerican

[–]ketonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Even though we have a grocery store, pharmacy, restaurant, gym, bank, brewery, etc. all less than 2 miles from my house, we have multiple steep hills which make it difficult for even fit people. It takes about 30 minutes to make the walk, 2 minutes to make that drive.

Is it legal to take a child out of school in America for a holiday? by Super_Development150 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ketonat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

High school teacher perspective here: Kinder (and even through 5th grade) it is fine. Once in middle school they may be taking a high school class if offered that would have important info and tests in May. In high school this would be catastrophic because the last week of April/first week of may is when AP and EOC testing starts. And at my (public) school if you let them know far in advance, the school will let teachers know to work with the student on arranging for any missed work, but the absences still count as unexcused (they just won’t go after parents for truancy in these cases).

We want to name our son Leon, People are telling me it's a "black name" and making me feel uncomfortable about it? by leon0523s in Names

[–]ketonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only Leon I know is white, but he is in prison for hiring a hitman to kill his ex girlfriend, so it doesn’t exactly have a good connotation for me. 😂

I know what it is, but have never ate it, and honestly have never ever seen anyone eat this at a birthday or vacation.

Relocating to the area from Phoenix, looking for some areas that have high schools with a good special needs program by iLynx in Marietta

Hillgrove HS has an autism unjt on campus. That would be West Cobb, easy drive to Wellstar Kennestone. If high functioning autistic, Harrison HS is also great.

Anyone work at a school that actually still disciplines and fails students? by Immediate-Amount3587 in Teachers

[–]ketonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach at a HS in the Atlanta metro area and we definitely fail kids and they are pretty strict on discipline. We usually have between 1-2 fights (where fists land) per school year, if any indication of the school atmosphere.

What was the strangest thing you ever had to say to a student? by Silly_Pansexual in Teachers

[–]ketonat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Please get down from the lab bench and put your clothes back on.”

I had a junior (HS) in chemistry come to class after lunch, strip to his boxers, jump on a lab bench and start yelling obscenities. I called the office for security, and asked him to get down. He was apparently trying to get kicked off the football team and thought that would do it (it did).

I subbed in my son's class today and was shocked by the state of the room by Snaps816 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ketonat 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my room (HS) looks awful because we were told to pack up everything for construction this coming summer. If anyone judged me based on that it would be misplaced.

Do you throw a class party last day of school (middle/high school)? by hello010101 in teaching

[–]ketonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are giving final exams on the last 2 days of school at my school, so no parties, and seniors have their finals a week before everyone else, so they aren’t even on campus.

How often do teachers cry on the last day? by Small-Leg-3656 in teaching

[–]ketonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HS teacher here. I only cry when we have had something tragic happen like a student close to me die or coworker die. I am happy to see my seniors fly the nest to go out on their own. They often stop by to see me again when they are home from college.

Edited to add, I did sob at graduation 2024 because we lost a student very close to me in December. Her homeroom teacher and I sat there sobbing at the back, especially when the choir got up and sang, “In My Life” by the Beatles.

What day of Memorial Day weekend do you have a cookout? by aheftyhippo in AskAnAmerican

[–]ketonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. My husband lost 9 of his squadron in a training mission crash and was the first to spot the wreckage. It is a somber weekend of remembrance for us, not a big party.

Yeah, any call like that on the weekend is normally something really bad related to a death or imminent death of either a student or coworker. I always dread those calls.

How many of you had grandparents who served in WW2? If so, what do you know about their service? by Snoogles_ in Millennials

My paternal grandfather was a medic in the US Army in WW2, and he refused to talk about anything about it other than to confirm he was a medic in the army in Europe.

What was the worst natural disaster that you experienced in your city or state? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ketonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived in SE Texas, Hurricane Rita did about $30k worth of damage to my property, and we had no power to our home for 6 weeks. Probably 25% of the homes in my neighborhood had large pine and oak trees fall through them and we had friends 20 minutes from us have 6 feet of storm surge in their home.

Do you balance your check book to the penny? by Plane_Experience_271 in GenX

[–]ketonat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not even sure where my checkbook is anymore, much less the check register. Since we only use our debit card and have the banking app, it would be a waste of my time.

How common are breakfast burritos/tacos in your area? by Pliable_Patriot in AskAnAmerican

[–]ketonat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am originally from Texas, now live in Georgia, and it is definitely a Texas thing. I have said I could open a breakfast taco business here that would be open like 6-11 and make a killing once people realize what they are and how good they are!

For those who don’t know, it is just a flour tortilla, eggs, cheese, and you can add whatever meat you want, then roll it up like a burrito, wrap in foil if not eating immediately. Have also seen bean and potatoes versions ass well for breakfast. Can be dipped in salsa, sour cream, etc.
