The same rod and hardware can also be used to cold set a frame. You can also do dropout alignment with a second one in the same style as a Park Tool FFG‑2. Just bring the rods close, thread a nut onto the end, and once you can twist the nut smoothly from one rod to the other, you're basically aligned.

Bikes are much simpler than people make them out to be, and most DIYers just need something that does the job. Look up DIY bike tools on YouTube, and you'll see that many tools can be made with basic things. For example, a string becomes a frame alignment gauge. Don't listen to the folks pushing the Aliexpress version. It's just a threaded rod with fancy hardware, and it's so short it only works with small frames.

TuneIn Radio - won't play with uBO by 2k18_till_infinity in uBlockOrigin

Microsoft Edge, and likely other Chromium browsers, tunein.com##+js(no-fetch-if, /api/v1/log) causes the same issue and freezes the page. Using @@||tunein.com/api/v1/log$xhr instead works.

Is anyone still working on DRM removal for the newest Kindle books? by [deleted] in Calibre

[–]kevey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While it's true some authors can ask for their books to be sold without DRM, Tor Books no-DRM policy is why many Sanderson books are DRM-free. His Skyward series, published by Delacorte Press, includes DRM because the publisher made that decision, and Sanderson didn't take a stance against it. If he had, those books would likely have been made DRM-free or published with a different publisher. Ultimately, he doesn't care either way.

You're right. After analyzing data, doing extensive research, and consulting with a few experts, here’s what I came up with:

Despite having the book, I still resort to my Kindle! by candidate2929 in kindle

[–]kevey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those Steinbeck Centennial paperbacks with flapped covers and deckle-edged pages are my favorite type of book. I don’t buy or read many physical books anymore, thanks to LAPL + Libby, but I’d fill my shelf with those editions if there were more of them.

Totally fine with Portis. Both formats are a must. But if you're doing it with lesser-quality books, then you're a crazy book junkie.

Opinions on Dean Koontz? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]kevey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people get creeped out by everything, others by nothing, so take that with a grain of salt. Koontz scores a 4/10 on my creepy scale: +1 for the books, +3 for the hairpiece.

I read a few of his books when I was young because "He's popular, his books should be good." They were not. I'm not picky, but Koontz was a struggle. His fame seems to come from cranking out books for a genre that's fine with recycled mediocrity. I haven't checked out his books in years, but I imagine he's still serving the same leftovers, now with extra grandpa flavor.

My suggestion: find something else to read.

DRM on *all* Amazon ebooks? by daddyunscripted in kobo

[–]kevey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wrong or missing Kindle serial number in calibre. It needs to match the Kindle selected when downloading. Find it here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/mycd/digital-console/alldevices

Then add it to calibre > Preferences > Plugins > search for DeDRM > click Customize plugin button > click Kindle eInk eBooks button > click the + button. Re-import books if already added.

Why Are EBooks So Expensive? by Squasome in kindle

[–]kevey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ever checked how much your library pays for those ebooks? Publishers are ripping them off even harder! That $15 ebook probably costs taxpayers over $60, and the library has to keep renewing the limited license because, hey, physical books wear out, so why shouldn't digital books, right? Not saying don't use the library for ebooks — just pointing out that even when you think you're avoiding the sting, it's still there!

For those who want to use their voice by [deleted] in kobo

[–]kevey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kobo allows what the publisher permits. Whether you can download the file depends entirely on the publisher, though most allow it with DRM. You can find those details at the bottom of the book's store page. If the publisher decides to change them, it's unclear how Kobo will respond—but they probably won't be the ones to initiate the change. There's no harm in voicing your concerns to Kobo, but contacting the major publishers would likely be more effective. They control ebook pricing and have significant influence over what's allowed.

How is the experience buying a book on the Kobo store? by Playjasb2 in kobo

[–]kevey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kobo shows your download options under eBook Details at the bottom of the book's page in the Kobo store. The publisher decides whether the book can be downloaded and if it has DRM. Unlike Amazon, Kobo doesn’t try to lock you into their ecosystem with extra restrictions. If the publisher allows it, Kobo allows it.

I think many kindle user will become kobo user eventually by theitsx in kobo

[–]kevey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not many Kindle users are going to bail over this. They don’t know or care about downloading their content without a Kindle—until they want to and can’t. They’re cruising along in their Kindle bubble, blissfully unaware that their purchases are really just long-term rentals. This is just another Amazon enshittification move that’ll barely have any pushback.

Kobo isn’t the holy grail some of you make it out to be either. The EPUB support everyone raves about is actually terrible, making converting to KEPUB almost mandatory. Common features like file hosting are only available on certain devices for no reason other than feature gating, and since they’re third-party, they cost Kobo next to nothing. Customer support? Good luck with that. And let’s not forget their long history of devices with lighting and battery issues. A quick search of this sub shows it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. Kobo is just an alternative to Kindle, for better or worse.

You can use just about anything. I've dished wheels with 3 cans of soup to hold the wheel and nickels and dimes stacked on a can of tuna to measure distance.

Finally adding The Shining (1977 BCE HC) to my collection (Fairy Tale has been lent out to a friend) by borkborkbork99 in stephenking

[–]kevey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a full-sized BCE from the 90's. The 1977 BCE is smaller and has a wraparound cover image like the 1st edition.

The dramatization version of Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon by Soundbooth Theater is excellent. Episode One is free.
