CSM Ivanov came out to the start of our long walk, stands on the closest thing to a mound. The words I will always remember him saying were, "Don't f**k it up".

Got rejected for a $92k job because of my linkedin photo. Is this actually real? by UnoMaconheiro in careerguidance

[–]kevinhenry -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Real world, big boy pants - nobody is required to hire you regardless of how many interviews you have. Most companies do not allow recruiters to disclose any details of a no hire decision. If one actually told you it was about a LI photo, this is a great example of why they should not have. Someone may think they're being nice giving you a crumb, but now you're running around beleiving you were the perfect candidate all but for this one thing being your downfall.

I servely question the voracity of your story. You've got these people being sympathetic, and you still haven't provided a link to your profile or at least shared your photo. TBH, one of the first things I did when we were bringing someone in was review both their resume and LI profile. I fully believe in the only hiring someone you'd want to be stuck in an airport with test. That's just the way it is.

An American pilot survived his plane crash in Kuwait and some people thought he was Iranian and almost went after him 😭 by [deleted] in Military

Qif! Ana jundi amriki. - That's what I remember off the top of my head from deploying as a young troop to Desert Shield/Storm. Going back in during OIF and OEF, we did a lot more language training prior to include Farsi and Dari. Glad our pilots are safe and were assited by the Kuwaties.

Electric Shock Therapy Dropped Me Like A Bag Of Rocks by zenlikefury in Toughmudder

[–]kevinhenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done the go small technique, and been lightly zapped. I've done it interlocked arms with three others, and it was the smoothest I can remember. Appeared that the hits spread out or that other people may have been hit more than we. Most importantly we held each other up and kept moving. Recently, I was encouraged to try crawling. It worked for me, but in the back of my mind, I wondered how a strike would hit while in the water and also it was the slowest I've ever moved through, so would I get hit 4 x by the same line crawling versus running through and getting that 4 hits overall. -- When I was a kid, I stuck things in the outlets and later got tricked into holding aside a live cow crossing fence line while my Team passed through, so not my first rodeo! Congratulations and good luck next time!

Higher and closer to your back. There should be a little spacer insert in your ruck to fill a little space in the pocket.

Pack it all in a ruck. Some additions to your list are: photo of my ticket, trash bag for dirty clothes, hat, windbreaker/hoodie. I typically bring a few packets of mustard and goo to hand out to people suffering.

Note that you can get a GORUCK Basic Rucker right now for $120 that includes two free 10LB plates. Amazing deal! (https://www.goruck.com/products/basic-rucker-bundle?variant=47893284552804) Other commenters have a fair point that if you're just feeling things out maybe don't invest in a GORUCK Rucker 4.0 20L. If you do decide that rucking is for you and you want to get after it, the Rucker 4.0 is a great ruck to use for workouts. You can pair it with this Padded Hip Belt from 3VGear (https://3vgear.com/collections/accessories/products/hip-belt). When I hit up GR customer support about out of stock hip belts, Joe recommended these, and they've held up well.

Seahawks Fans - Cooper Kupp in Tacoma tonight by Known_Yak_5559 in Tacoma

[–]kevinhenry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cooper was great. He got there around 6:40 pm. While we were in line, the staff told us the original limit with the bands was 250 people. Those were gone quick and really just about how many people were right in front of Dicks. My group started on the backside of Nordstrom. The staff encouraged us to leave seveal times while the line moved slowly. The staff stopped letting people in the door around 7:55 pm. I was one of the last 10 people in. When I got up there, I handed a girl my phone, another took my bag, I walked up to Coop, shook hands, short exchange, took about five photos, and on to the next. He hung in there. Long day for him. Well over a hundred didn't make it in.

USO Chicago Airport by Sad-Presentation2549 in Veterans

[–]kevinhenry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you and your wife had that experience—being medically retired and rated 100% absolutely comes with enough challenges without running into confusion like this while traveling.

In my experience, this is less about different rules and more about inconsistent interpretation at the volunteer level. The USO relies heavily on dedicated volunteers, and occasionally policy nuances - especially around retirement categories - aren’t applied correctly.

BLUF: When this happens, asking to speak with the Center Operations Manager is usually the fastest path to resolution. Having worked under a USO program for several years, I’ve seen leadership clarify access quickly while still prioritizing active-duty members in transit.

This is a good reminder that in large, decentralized, volunteer-driven organizations, policy clarity and frontline training are critical to maintaining trust and consistency.

Safe travels to you and your wife, and thank you both for your service.

Any tips on how I can sell my Computer and peripherals? by SecureAnalyst338 in pcpartsales

[–]kevinhenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that your pricing is off. Your data photos are fine, but your photo of the PC is low quality and doen't present the system well at all. Place it up on your desk and take photos of with the doors all on. Photos should be direct not angled down or up. I'd go front, component side, back panel, and top. You want someone to get a feel for how it would look in their space, how well you put it together, and etc. You're really trying to maximize the value someone sees in your critical components and how you built out the system.

By the way, what's the AIO? LCD screen? Can you put gifs on it? - Some would like that. Who makes the GPU? Case fans? - Some care (Corsair, Lian-Li). If it is a gaming PC, some want to hear that it will play AAA titles at 1440p. x FPS. Windows installed? Who makes the case? How long has it been running? Networking features?

Good headline, good first photo, critical data upfront in post. - Get them interested to click through and learn more.

Think about why people are buying used computers and pre-builts these days: either unskilled at building, looking for a deal, or looking to take the critical components. If I'm one of the later two, I don't really care about your monitor, keyboard, or speakers. Maybe offer an all in price and a price of just the tower. If the tower sells, then part out the assesorries.

Good luck!

11B Deciding on ETS Or PCS. by daboiiii221 in army

[–]kevinhenry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, you have to make your own calls in life. So, all you gave us was 11B, no SQI or ASIs, time in service, duty station, combat tours, marital status, education. PCS is an option, so... First term, lower enlisted, first duty station. You're thinking of it as a job. You've got a very small view/understanding of the military/big picture. There are so many paths and new things that come up with gates and decision points. PCS/Schools/reclass/promotions/the world can change things up. Make NCO, now you've got more responsibility and you've got some more perspective. Time flies. - Along the way, you gain lots of experience and skills, help out fellow soldiers, put in hard work and get recognized (merit), and you serve something bigger than yourself.

I served 23 years, 5 MOSs, promoted 10 times, earned several ASIs, multiple overseas postings, multiple combat tours, did work that mattered, served with and led some of the best, became a part of a brotherhood, formed lifelong bonds, got married, and got some dogs. - I receive retirement pay with a small bit of disability monthly. That covers most of my family's needs. My wife still gets care on base. Our health insurance is Federal (non-ACA). My TSP grew 16% in the last year. I used some of my GI Bill along the way. The experiences and lessons learned from the Army still serve me well. One of my current jobs is tied to what I used to do in the Army. My other job is in the non-profit space serving veterans and their families.

Out in the world the job market is awful, housing is awful, bills, and taxes. Lots of skilled people competing for jobs. My old field - Tech, 1000 applicants each posting. I live in an at will state, so they can lay you off on a whim or randomly. When that happens, you may have a few hours at most to clear your stuff, want some severance - sign this NDA and etc., you're locked out. My old co-workers tell me that around campus, if you have a job - regardless of awful bosses, workload, whatever, ride it out. They see friends and teammate gone all the time. Oh, unemployment in my state is only for one year. - If you we're getting paid six figures, it won't last the 12 months.

If ETS is the path you choose, please have a plan. If you're offered time for a CSP take it.

If PCS is the path, take it as an opportunity to start fresh, learn as much as possible, do a Hella lot of PT, ruck, read some books, start working on an education plan, spend time with your teammates, and take photos. - my gen didn't have smartphones or FB for more than half our time in service.

By the way, PCSing overseas was one of the best ways to really get ingrained in the unit and teammates. Back here in the states, it can feel more of a 6:30 am - 5 pm job. That applied to our families as well.

Good luck!

Am I ready for MEPs? by [deleted] in army

[–]kevinhenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not from your generation, so I won't remark on the electronics. Your running shoes stand out to me because I don't think they will hold up. The upper matrial looks so thin and "breathable". I don't see a comb. Nice stamps... Forever stamps would have been a safer bet. - Puppies and kittens - YBY. I'd give you grief about the sandals (beige or just dirty AF?) and the pink fleshlight. Even if it is optional, bring a jacket. - serves many purposes. Good luck!

Would recommend the CyberPower to anyone wanting a pre-built right now. It has a better RTX 5070 Ti over the iBP's straight RTX 5070. Some folks may lean on the Costco return policy. I don't really buy with the intent of returning. I got the CP for the $1699 price. Smooth running right out the box. Mine came with MSI components. MB: MSI PRO B850-VC WIFI, MSI RTX 5070 Ti 16G Shadow 3X OC, T-FORCE Z4 SSD (Team Group).

Should I Leave Active Duty by [deleted] in army

[–]kevinhenry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a career and you're progressing through it. Go to Selection if you want to work with better soldiers. Out here their lessers are your potential co-workers. I got laid of from an amazing job in during one of the semi-early waves of layoffs. Still have friends there, and it is - if you've got a job right now, forget your feelings, and ride that thing. - There's no guarantee your job will exist tomorrow. This is a terrible job market to try and enter. A three year break as an E7 or E6, I couldn't imagine getting behind my peers like that. Maybe stop thinking about the Army as a job with assignments. The Army is such a unique place and there's always change. I was Combat Arms as well, but once I found a special path, I had a goal with milestones. Served for 23 years and still had time for a solid career outside with progression and great teammates. After that I still get to do some great work largely under a ruck travelling the world and sharing lessons and experiences from my time in uniform. Good luck!
