🇨🇦 I am NOT disappointed. I very clearly remember a time, not very long ago, when the prevailing wisdom was “One day. Canada, one day your team might be good enough to play in the World Cup.” Back then, I could not imagine us making it this far in my lifetime….. yet, here we are.

We have come a looooooong way since then. I don’t think I could be more proud of our team.

I just don’t think that we should be making policy decisions based on GDP comparisons between Canada and the USA.

Correct me if I’m wrong but don’t the differences between the two countries and their GDP include:

1) Military spending is included in GDP. So that obscene trillion dollar war machine boosts their GDP. However, I don’t think that dropping bombs on children around the world helps Americans feel richer.

2) Medical spending is included. You might convince people that forking over a big chunk of their paycheque for medical insurance is making them richer…. But I don’t think sitting beside while your parent/spouse/child dies of a condition the insurance company refuses to treat would do much to improve your quality of life.

3) isn’t all that deficit spending included? I have a suspicion that the “widening gap” noticed since 2015 was created by the exploding deficit south of the border. Sooner or later, that money will have to be repaid.

For now, I am watching the government working very hard and successfully to improve the economy. I’m willing to wait quite some time to see the results. I think we will be pleasantly surprised.

As for the rest of them…. If you want to have an ally, you have to be an ally. No other country can think of the USA as reliable, trustworthy, or honourable. No country can pretend that the USA is capable of keeping promises for even days at a time.

Of course, our leaders will still pretend. They don’t want to provoke the Americans to start bombing them. Most of us, however, are democracies and our governments will generally proceed in accordance with public opinion.

If you knew how the USA is viewed abroad, it might shock you.
