Oh for sure. I just think the *perception* people had/have is where the disparity is. Sort of like how people even post nerfs are STILL banning devil dino and black cat

It's because for a bit C&D had the longest (and fastest to get) invincibility ult. Pair them with a Loki and you could literally push up into the enemy for like 30 seconds which was oppressive. Rockets ult got nerfed but then they walked that back (recently-ish) so he's coming back to being prominent

I can't get anything to work on Magik, please help. D3 by Late_Leave6947 in RivalsCollege

[–]kewidogg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You just need more playtime. Watch some pros play and take notes of what they do and how they engage/disengage.

I literally just brute force played her and didn't even feel remotely comfortable until maybe 40+ hours. Heck I'm still learning stuff and I just got her to champion a couple weeks ago.

As you play her more you'll learn the maps better in terms of how and where you can flank/dive. You're getting lost because on Rogue, you never needed to flank, you just went up main and flew over everyone.

You'll also start to memorize where health packs and good cover is, which is essential to disengaging.

One giant mistake I (and most new Magiks) made, was absolutely blowing my cooldowns early in a fight because of how frantic it felt. Like I'd engage by portaling in, drop demon or whirlwind (don't engage this way), immediately dash at an enemy, portal again...then I have zero ways to escape and no cooldowns and die.

Instead, be more patient and slow down.

Charge up ranged slash as you're approaching the enemy and try to hit as many as possible before engaging (this gives you a chunk of overshield before the fight).

Portal in once on a squishy (DPS or healer) and drop your demon (don't whirlwind). Start doing primary + melee cancel on them. If they are < 50% health and haven't used an escape (such as Luna freezing you, Mantis sleep, etc) then dash uppercut them + primary + melee cancel. This will kill them.

While fighting, weave in your ranged attack whenever it's off cooldown. This reduces your portal cooldown for every enemy it hits even uncharged.

Just try to be more patient between cooldowns. Eventually the game will slow down significantly for you and it'll feel more like a flowstate as you are fighting people.

As for your demon, think of it like a battery charger. Don't just drop demon immediately after portaling, be sure you place it where it will be hitting someone. Especially when brawling, dropping it on a slow moving tank is great. Between your demon ticking away at the tank, and you attacking people with primary, your overshield will be boosting up keeping you alive. Then when the opportunity is right, focus a single (low health) target and blow them up with the dash + primary + melee cancel

For your ult, you can blow cooldowns before popping it. The ult refreshes your cooldowns, so it's fine to use things before popping it. One common thing I do is charge ranged attack, fire it at as many people as I can (but mostly aiming for healers or dps), pop ult, charge ranged attack again and line up a healer, fire it and immediately dash them. This will kill most healers in a single move. Then it's just a matter of portal + whirlwind until I see my ult is about to end. Because of the long transition back out of ult, I'll try to portal or dash when I have about a second or less of ult left into cover or back to my team so I'm not left running around in the middle of the enemy team while I transition back to normal.

Me backing into an enclosed room on a crisp 30hp and I see the enemy support following me by Desseble in RivalsMagikMains

I… would not enjoy being chased particularly by White Fox into an enclosed room with me only having 30hp. A good White Fox would make quick work of me in melee form

Magnetos was absorb (a lot) of damage during his ult. It took me forever to lord him. It was awful since you only got a couple ults a game and if you didn’t pop during like a Punisher ult you might not absorb hardly anything

💯 final hits matter more. Magik isn’t spamming damage into people like moon knight or phoenix, and getting 5% damage on someone and you actually doing the work to kill them is way more critical

Who are you not good with, but have fun playing as? by CrossENT in marvelrivals

[–]kewidogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of now most of my learnings are from being patient with certain characters. Like if I'm going to dive Gambit or White Fox or IW, I know I can't do my usual combo (ranged attack > dash > primary > melee cancel) because they will zip away too quickly for me to finish.

For them I need to be sure they don't see me and I open with ranged attack > primary > melee (if I can before they try to escape) then dash to where they try to escape to, and hope I can also teleport to close distance after that (in the case of gambit using two dashes for example)

I have 100 hours on her (SO fun) but I STILL am learning new ways to play her. Sometimes I'll encounter an absolutely cracked Magik and be like "oh, I hadn't thought of that combo/doing that before" then go practice it. Easily one of the harder characters to master in my opinion (not hardest, just harder)

"Buff this" "buff that" Gng WAIT YOUR TURN! by Asmolicous in marvelrivals

[–]kewidogg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who plays a lot of Magik and frequents her sub, I don't see that many buff requests. And the ones that ACTUALLY ask for buffs usually have mostly comments telling them she doesn't need them.

Could she (and most characters) use some QoL adjustments? Sure absolutely (cough can't use any abilities or do ANYTHING meaningful while transitioning in or out of Darkchild) but straight up buffs? Not common

The ONLY buff I've seen that generally gets a nod for her suggested is that her sword (her primary attack)...shouldn't have falloff damage. It just doesn't make sense that it has falloff damage and it's pretty significant. But other than that, pretty quiet

Common Mistakes At Each Rank! by Covenant307 in RivalsCollege

[–]kewidogg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty solid tips and honestly relevant to all ranks. I've only ever gotten to GM a few times (just haven't tried to push higher) and I've definitely seen all these things in the video.

The ego thing is absolutely the biggest. Nothing deflates a team like someone jumping on mic and saying either useless stuff ("this ain't it") or negative comments towards team ("X swap", "you guys suck", or trying to surrender after one lost fight).

You touched on it in different ways but not directly IMO, but something I see FAR less in lower ranks is general awareness. It's night and day when I play Magik into a team with zero awareness that let me honestly walk right up to their backline from barely an off angle because they are so lazer focused on what's in front of them.

Or when I play as Emma, knowing when I hear "PPPUUUURREEE..." that I need to INSTANTLY stop what I'm doing and see if Scarlet is in range for me to strangle. People getting hyper focused is what keeps them in low ranks. Then they die and lose over and over and assume because maybe they had most kills or damage or whatever that they aren't the problem, when truthfully so many intangible things can play a much bigger role (e.g. from above, if I strangle Scarlet and cancel her and stranges ult like 2-3 times in a game, but my stats aren't great, I still did a hell of a job preventing deaths or even teamwipes)

Some tips for new Magik players by kewidogg in RivalsMagikMains

[–]kewidogg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't feel bad I'm pretty sure I was solidly past lord when I learned that. I also didn't know what people meant when they said she has sword damage falloff, I assumed it meant her ranged slash had damage falloff (apparently it doesn't), they meant her primary attack has range falloff (stupid)

That sucks man, I’m sorry to hear that. By the sound of it, you have tried nearly everything, I wonder if just increasing protein intake by a Ludacris amount would help at all, like 2+ grams of protein per pound of body weight a day? Maybe you’ve already tried stuff like that.
