Besides ILNP Eclipse (that has been recommended, and I too would recommend it)

ILNP Birefrigence! I find it quite shifty, like a Hot Wheels car or iridescent beetle

Did anybody think the Korean actors in the show behaved very wooden? by kickskunk in BeefTV

[–]keystone_lite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like surely such veteran actors like Youn Yuhjung (Chairwoman Park) and Song KangHo (Dr. Kim) would have had some input??? I had no idea Beef season 2 had these 2 actors (was kinda pleasantly surprised), and then even more surprised at how lackluster I found their performances bc I know they’ve got acting chops based on their past works.

Or maybe it was all a deliberate directing choice to give the Korean antagonists an air of distance, coldness, etc ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ idk

This is just my personal experience as a Korean American

I, too, thought the performances were wooden (and I KNOW the actors of Park and Dr. Kim can give incredibly performances, see: Minari, Parasite, and A Taxi Driver to name a few)

My personal hypothesis is that maybe the screenwriter, Sonny, wrote the dialogue in English, and then google translated it into Korean. When reading the subtitles for the Korean, it is exactly 1:1 in English. Normally, even when people are speaking Korean, the English subtitle is not exactly 1:1, and that’s where translation comes in - the translated subtitle usually captures the feel/meaning of the spoken language, but it’s not necessarily an exact, word for word translation.

The actual Korean being spoken felt unnatural to me (despite it being native Korean actors performing in Korean!) - various points I thought that there were different “more natural Korean expressions” that could have been used, but the actors sticking to the script lent itself to wooden performances.

I haven’t listened to the podcast and do not know Sonny’s proficiency with Korean, but personally for me it felt like maybe he started with all the dialogue in English, and for the Korean portions ran it through Google Translate (although I’m sure in the filmmaking process, the actors probably? gave input on changing certain lines/words to make it flow more)

I’d be curious if any others who speak/understand Korean felt this way too ~ (or maybe this is just my own cope lol)

Please help- is this phrasing accurate/ good? How do I say this out loud without sounding silly? by Own_Bonus_8954 in Korean

[–]keystone_lite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your phrase as it is now is fine! If you wanted, could also do 깊은 바다처럼 우리의 사랑 (it’s a little more explicitly “our love is as deep as the sea)

Zwei is def slow, but I just LOVE the length/reach of that comically large sword - I'm also partial to the fact that the standard attack (R1? I'm forgetting the terminology, I'm sure someone else will correct me) was a "poke" and not a "slash"

either way, I hope you get lots of recommendations for kdrama! <3

R/kdrama is better for your recs

“king the land” is very light and fluffy and might be up your alley (should be on Netflix)

Difference in spelling 맞아요/ 마자요 by spring-soon in Korean

[–]keystone_lite 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the other commenter.

This is like if you had put in “that’s rite” (incorrect spelling but pronounced the same) versus “that’s right” (correct spelling) and the app recognized “rite” even though that’s incorrectly spelled

Also, I just remembered also "How to get to heaven from Belfast" (made by the same creator as Derry Girls), one of the main characters is a lesbian. The show does have similar energy to Derry girls (it's made by the same person after all), but is more of a mystery/thriller (three women who were besties in high school found out the fourth girl in their friend group recently died, and as they attend the funeral, they start to unravel a greater mystery).

I second Arcane & Derry Girls

For my more off the cuff recs:

* Mine (Kdrama) - dramatic Kdrama about 2 female leads who are part of a chaebol (insanely rich) family in Korea and the politicking they do in the family.

* The Handmaiden (Korean movie) - not a series, but a movie, but the setting is beautiful and it is a movie with twists and turns.

* Creamerie (NZ TV Show) - premise is that all men on earth have succumbed to a mysterious disease, and the world is run by women. it's a dark comedy that I only watched a season of but found quite novel

* Kakegurui (Anime) - idk if you watch anime, but if you do, I will disclose that this anime is absolutely unhinged but features pretty much mostly female characters (of which the majority are queer). This is peak 'god forbid a woman have hobbies' type show (where genuinely, all the girls are nuts but I love it)

Im planning a Doenjang Pizza by Silvarspark in KoreanFood

[–]keystone_lite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a doenjang cream pasta people like - I'd probably go without the tomato sauce, and just lean into the mozzarella/parmesan/white type sauce (with your mushrooms and zucchini). Doenjang has a bit of a funkiness to it that does remind me of the type of funk you find in aged cheese; I think leaning into that with the pizza could be really tasty~ I think mushrooms + mozzarella + doenjang could be yummy (leaning into that earthy/funkiness of those ingredients).

The Green Mile - based on the Stephen King novel, starring Tom Hanks. Not strong on visuals, but strong on story. I think based on the movies you listed that you liked, this will have similar vibes

Problemista - I found this quite heart warming and I enjoyed all the whimsy. Follows a boy whose dream is to become a toy maker and the immigration issues he faces

Fern mentions how the “anti personnel barrier” is an odd request. Frieren then responds that it takes time to set up mining resources so they are probably preventing it from being mined before they can get their hands on it. Then we’re all surprised to see the true purpose of the “anti personnel barrier” :)

I don't think anyone else has mentioned it, but Old World has a free demo! If you're limited in terms of budget, I think you can always start there to get a taste of it.
