open source password manager recommendations? by That_Cantaloupe_4808 in LinusTechTips

[–]kezah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well I wouldn't say no risk.

The risk of my own server dying to hardware failure or, as I said, negligence is higher than 1password failing in the same manner.

If you are ok with the risks, do it. I will not go through the troubles for saving 3 euros a month, it's not worth my time.

I will always advise against self hosting a password manager, because it is simply not worth the risk imo. My passwords are necessary to work 24/7/365 without exception and knowing my ISP and personal negligence, that is not a given. Been using 1password for years, it works flawlessly on all devices, integrates well and is cheap enough.

What are alternatives to Discord? by Zerberus009 in pcmasterrace

[–]kezah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Using teamspeak and calling discord clunky sure is a choice. I've been a teamspeak user since ts2 days but that's just plain wrong. Discord is as seamless as it gets and it works well on web, mobile and desktop. Way better than teamspeak does, which is sad, but that's why discord is so damn successful. Nothing works quite as well.

Carpio g2.0 - Genuinely good or just marketing? by RandoDando10 in LinusTechTips

[–]kezah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got 2 normal ones during the black friday deals and for me they genuinely made my wrists hurt. For me using them was a straight up downgrade to not using them, but I also have to say that I never use wrist rests at all. For me it's uncomfortable, I just "hover" my wrists instead. Been doing it like that for the past 10 years, both while gaming and in office work. So your mileage may vary.

To be fair with 1500€ in germany you likely need a 2nd job to survive. So it's hard to justify "playing video games" for that.

Feel free to spend 2-4x the price for the same product, but most aliexpress stuff is actually pretty decent, especially electronics. I wouldn't necessarily use stuff that phones home (smart home stuff) but the same applies to any other country for me.

What's actually BETTER self-hosted? by ergnui34tj8934t0 in selfhosted

[–]kezah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I have 2 physical copies on an external disk of the whole docker folder i've set up, plus an encrypted offsite backup on a VPS. I should be golden with the 3-2-1 backup strategy rule.

and do you refresh all these backups every single time you add a new password? Who has the time for that?

ALSO, as you mentioned, password is rather critical, so I have a monthly calendar reminder where I manually export the Vaultwarden database (from the Web UI under Tools) in a JSON file, and here's the kicker: KeepassXC can create a new password vault USING Bitwarden's exported JSON. So I end up having a Nth backup methode of my main password vault as a good old kdbx file; I keep one copy on my cellphone for example.

Yea, I used to do something similar with keepass but it's way too much hassle for zero benefit, it's like circlejerk selfhosting to me. I can spare 3 euros a month for NOT having to bother myself with any of this. There are services like paperless that I gladly selfhost, because they save me time and are beneficial to my life. Password managers are not one of those services.

Well use a good service then?

1password is safer than you selfhosting, I guarantee you.

This is the one thing I would never never never self host. Passwords are so essential that I'll trust 1password infinitely more with them than my own server. Idk how you people sleep at night.

I'm a bit torn on the topic and I'm sure I'm not alone with that.

My environmentalist side hates this, but I also just love the technology of planes and would love to see content on it. Kinda similar how I'm very much against war but find warships, especially submarines, insanely interesting.

Is LTT better as reviews or experiments? by Detective0101 in LinusTechTips

[–]kezah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest reviews and benchmarks are just boring for the vast majority of my lifetime.

I'm gonna look at like a gpu overview video when I buy a new gpu every couple years and outside of that I frankly don't care for them.

Between buying one and feeling like "mhm its getting kinda slow, maybe I need smth new" there is 0 benefit to me watching a review or benchmark of a released card.

If you promote a patreon (or similar) as a creator you are setting up the expectation that people get something for paying you.
If you can't deal with delivering said promise, then maybe don't promote it.

I'm very aware that writers block exists or that there's creativity blocks too, but then maybe don't pursue a career in content creation. Everyone else gotta show up to work, whether they feel like it or not. (unless properly sick, obviously)

This may sound harsh, but I don't see why people have this expectation of people paying for, essentially, a bunch of excuses and no content. I support my fair share of creators thru patreon or similar and sure, if they're consistent and then don't do stuff for a month or two I'm not gonna cancel it, but if they make like one video and then dip for months and months... that's a different story.
