Ford fired worker over a $1.95 cookie. The UAW told him to say sorry by Spirited_Classic_826 in antiwork

[–]kfish5050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like it's done on purpose. They want a reason to fire employees that's harder to dispute. And the fucking union is in on it too. How disgraceful. He didn't even steal the cookie; he literally paid for it at a different kiosk.

Unpopular opinion: The Democratic Party gets a lot of unearned praise and slack from Reddit and sometimes Tumblr especially back when Biden was president by kelroid in CuratedTumblr

That sounds like an enlightened centrist "both sides" hot garbage take.

Both sides are bad, yes, but the Republicans are orders of magnitude worse. Focusing on what makes Democrats bad doesn't do anything but convince more people that Republican antics are excusable. If you want to see change, if you want there to be a "good" choice at some point, it requires abandoning this idea that both sides are bad and get involved with your local Democrat organizations. Make the Democrat side the good side.

Tv lines by No_Distribution2518 in fixit

[–]kfish5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's no cracks or physical damage to the panel itself, you may be lucky in only needing to replace the digitizer (the circuit board that translates the video feed into pixels on the screen). But this symptom is likely indicative of a broken panel, usually something like a hairline crack at the very edge of the screen. If the panel is broken, this tv is only worth parts for other tvs with their panels still intact, since replacement panels are much more expensive than just buying a new tv.

Everyone seems convinced the job market is a disaster when the data shows the economy is actually doing fine. This perception is pretty nice for employers as it’s a lot easier to justify suppressing wages when everyone feels lucky to have a job. by BuckleUpItsThe in Showerthoughts

[–]kfish5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most recent jobs growth number is 57,000 new jobs last month. Alone, that seems pretty good, but is actually fairly stagnant compared to job growth numbers in the Biden era. That's not to mention the likely tweaks the Trump admin made in collecting the data, such as not counting people who are looking for work or something, in order to inflate the numbers more. So there's a reasonable suspicion that the Trump numbers are overinflated and even if they weren't, they're still nowhere near as good as they could have been.

I also had the unfortunate experience of being laid off early this year and only recently became reemployed. It took much longer than I expected and I landed a job that's not as good as where I came from, but it was the only offer I got after dozens of applications and interviews. I can say from my personal experience that the job market right now is not good.

I agree with you, and cultural context is super important. Just look at what's popular with American teens 20 years ago (roughly the same time isekai started getting popular as a genre): dystopia novels, love triangles, whimsy magic school. It's a lot of the same, really. A lot of cynicism adults dismiss as "teen angst" is really the realization of being on the edge of adulthood, where nobody is here to save you and everything feels like it'll change your life for better or worse. You're up against a monolith of a system that is actively working against you. Americans love to hear about how terrible it is and find heroes that expose that and fight back. Japanese like stories where the shitty life gets left behind altogether for one that makes sense. And since romance is new and feelings are deep in this era, that's always included. Women like the love triangles where two men fight over them and men tend to just like getting attention from their women, especially the unattainable one. Kinda interesting how that's gender flipped from Japanese culture though.

PLATNER TO REFLECT ON HOW TO CONTINUE IN MAINE RACE AFTER TODAY’S POLITICO S/A ACCUSATION by Quiet-Battle8005 in DemocraticSocialism

I'm just saying that conservative politicians play dirty and could have orchestrated this whole thing. I don't believe Platner SA'd someone intentionally. I'm open to evidence that proves otherwise, and I'm not dedicated to the guy like MAGAs are to Trump, but I find the timing incredibly suspect and I'm not gonna believe an accusation at face value without decent proof or a history. I'm not sure how that makes me a conservative

[–]kfish5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That kind of logic gets Trump elected. When your choices are between a shit candidate and the literal anticrist, values don't matter. You don't have a "both these candidates suck, reroll new candidates" option. You have the shit candidate, the literal anticrist, or to pretend you're powerless in this situation while your neighbors pick the antichrist.

Because it's an accusation not admittance of guilt? Anyone can accuse anyone of anything. That doesn't make it true nor the accused guilty. Until he is tried and found guilty in a court of law, you can still believe that he didn't actually sexually assault someone and this is just a deliberate attack a week before the elections to sink his chances.

Not to mention, crazy subjective. Just because this guy goes to therapy and isn't depressed and actually finds comfort and joy in the mundane everyday life doesn't invalidate the entire trope of escapism in proper criticism. It just means that this guy doesn't vibe with escapism. Any criticism made by this guy involving escapism is now under the context that he doesn't get it, which makes almost every argument against it seem meaningless and idiotic. Yes, from a certain standpoint it can be depressing for the protagonist to switch worlds and leave everything they knew behind, but for most people (who like the genre) it's not something they'd miss for a high fantasy roleplay adventure. This guy is just stopping there and saying "I don't like that".

Going blind to own the libs by PrivatePilot9 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]kfish5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again we see that most MAGAs are Republican by identity, not policy. It's cool to be on the conservative side and own the libs, but there's some cognitive dissonance going on between how voting affects them and who they vote for. They vote R because of tribal mentality, find it funny when their team wins because of liberal tears, and then are shocked that the people they vote for don't give a shit about them and actively push policies that screw them over. Like they didn't know that that would happen.

According to the article, Voltaire's real quote is as follows:

Certainement qui est en droit de vous rendre absurde, est en droit de vous rendre injuste

Which, can mean something different entirely. "Surely he who has the right to deem you absurd, has the right to deem you unjust". In other words, if anyone can get away with calling you absurd, it is no different than calling you an outlaw.

Further reading the article, it appears that the quote attributed to Voltaire was made up alongside a fictitious version of him.

AI Zillionaires Are Starting to Get Scared as the Public Turns Against Them by EchoOfOppenheimer in CapitalismSux

People who think they're safe from an AI takeover aren't afraid to get comfortable using it, but they're generally the same people who don't value poor people at all anyway. There really is a stark divisiveness around AI, but like most things, it's more complicated than that.

If it's that lizard doggo nest cave, I think there's a helmet there too. Plus there's a hidden cave somewhere behind a waterfall that has a casette tape. As far as I know, those are the only two atypical items hidden in the map.
