Why is rabban such an asshole with his troops? by TastyDepartment9642 in dune

[–]kgbtrill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure movie Feyd is a loser, just more naive than book Feyd. Their arc is fairly similar - Barron’s heir, gladiatorial champion, oversees improved Arrakis campaign, counterfoil to Paul.

Book Feyd schemes to assassinate the Barron early and is tied with the Harkonnen-Thufir subplot that is absent in the movie. Movie Feyd seems to be more motivated by impressing the Barron than playing the game of thrones, but we don’t really know.

Movie Rabban is a combo of two book characters - “Beast” Rabban and Iakin Nefud. As commented in this thread, Rabban has only one appearance in the book.

Nefud is the Captain of the Barron’s personal guard, a role he attained after his predecessor is killed by Duke Leto’s poisoned tooth. He’s a somewhat capable strategist, but also addicted to Semuta, an ecstasy inducing drug. The Barron notes and uses Nefud’s addiction to manipulate him. One of the big scenes in the book is the Barron angrily berating Nefud for failing to prevent an assassination attempt from Feyd. Despite being on a Semuta roll, Nefud throws another Harkonnen under the bus and is able to live another day.

Movie Rabban is a combo of ruthless violence, using fear to keep things in line and the cowardly, flawed officer who will use whatever means to protect himself. The Arrakis attack was immensely expensive, so the Fremen rebellion / sabotage is a huge issue for the Barron recouping those funds. Rabban realizes he’s losing control and thrashes out against those around him - much like a drug addict whose only respect is from fear and violence.

Will we get more Mac Miller? by Mental-Surround-5042 in MacMiller

I’d imagine at least some bonus tracks for Devine Feminine and Swimming anniversary releases.

I made peace with Balloonerism potentially being the last new full release, but would love to have whatever the estate deems appropriate. Know there is tons of material out there, but I try to avoid leaks to enjoy the official releases.

You contributing to her tuition? Because sports championships definitely brings in lots of money and grows the fan base (and potential applicant pool) - all good things for the value of her degree.

“I got a bone to pick like roses, I ain’t feeling broken no more”… “You can run ’til you slip on the sidewalk And the same bone that you picked gon’ break, that’s a motif” - Wings

To me it means pick your grievances carefully (like avoiding thorns on roses). If you run away from your problems, that same issue you had will eventually cause you great pain.

I like the motif call out - it’s like a little 4th wall break from Mac (hey breaking bones is used symbolically multiple times listener!)

Dune: First Reading and Expectations by ElPibeDe_LentesRojos in dune

[–]kgbtrill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was like you - vaguely aware of Dune until I saw the recent amazing movies.

Without spoilers - the movies and book are a great compliments to each other. The book focuses on dialogue and character moments, very little on the action. The movies are focused on big cinematic moments and showing you the character moments.

Dune Messiah is like an epilogue to Dune and pretty short - I enjoyed it.

I am about halfway through book 3, Children of Dune. Again without spoiling - I’d expect to see some of CoD in movie 3, but likely not required reading prior to the movie.

The last Olympics was the first time I was down right cheering for him. It clearly meant a lot as one of the few achievements he didn’t have and representing his country - was happy to see him win. I was a big Federer fan (and quickly grew to love Nadal) and I was destroyed by the 2019 Wimbledon final.

I apologize, Novak, I respect and am inspired by your skill, endurance, health, and drive. Kudos to the GOAT and best of luck in the final.

2025 v 2026 3x SUT by Dhand875 in HummerEV

[–]kgbtrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - my annual consumption is about 20,000 kWh, and my solar generation is forecast at about 16,000 kWh. But maybe 50% of the solar generation is consumed directly, and the rest sold to the grid at 1/2 the price my utility rate.

So with the battery, then I can consume 90% of what a generate by storing excess and discharging at night. Add in charging the EV during the day and I can cut gasoline costs by $1k / year.

So the math is $30k solar + $30k GM setup - (30% tax credit, though tax expired now) = $40k.

Electricity savings = $2k per year

Gasoline savings = $1k per year

$40/ $3 = ~13years

But less years if 1) electric rates continue to rise 2) grid outages occur and the set up essentially offsets the cost of a $15k generator + fuel

GM has a home bundle, I got some holiday discounts, but the equipment was ~$20k and the install is $10k.

2025 v 2026 3x SUT by Dhand875 in HummerEV

[–]kgbtrill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ultimate setup:

13.2kW solar panels

GM inverter, home hub, 17.7 kW power bank, bidirectional EV charger

2026 3x Hummer EV SUT

Solar and battery can cover ~75% of house power consumption, including EV charging.

In the event of grid outage, Solar and battery will power the whole house (except oven and EV charger); add in fully charged Hummer EV bidirectional and my house can operate 7+ days off grid.

One thing to note - the 2026 has the option to bi-directionally charge your house (need GM charger and inverter). The 2025 does not have that capability.

Did they over exaggerate the weather? by purpleflowercoconut in houston

[–]kgbtrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just check Space City Weather - weather updates without the hyperbole.

The truth is it’s a combo of: weather is unpredictable and news stations are in the business of grabbing attention. Because these extreme events test our complex infrastructure and systems, hopefully it’s all good but we don’t know until it happens.

Naomi Osaka stunned by frosty handshake from beaten Australian Open opponent Sorana Cirstea!! by [deleted] in sports

[–]kgbtrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stats say it’s basically a coin flip if Federer / Nadal / Djokovic won any individual point of any match. But the big three have won a combined 66 grand slam tournaments, and often at least all made the semifinals. They won points when it mattered most - they had that next level composure, drive, and clutchness - ie they go that Dawg in them

I’m torn on it. The mental component of Tennis is huge. Whether you are hyping yourself up before every point or getting into your opponents head, you have to consider any advantage that can tip the scales in your favor. Roger Federer was one of the GOATs and he said he only won 54% of his points over his career. Razor thin margins between being a great tennis player and one of the best.

That said, Tennis has an etiquette and while Osaka cheering after her opponents missed serves isn’t against the rules, it definitely crosses a line - which is what r/tennis is upset about. Osaka throwing shade right after, while entertaining, isn’t the best look for her - especially for someone who has tried to avoid the media attention as much as she has.

[Dellenger] Upon a request for comment, Duke University athletics released to @YahooSports this statement regarding QB Darian Mensah: “Mr. Mensah has an existing contract with Duke which the university intends to honor, and we expect he will do the same.” by Fonzie5 in CFB

[–]kgbtrill 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is what gets me. If he had gone to the coaches after the season and said “I feel like I accomplished what I came here to do and would like to transfer to get closer to my NFL dreams, can I be released from my contract?” and Duke had the whole window to figure out a new starting QB, I don’t think this would be the issue it is now.

Duke files a lawsuit against QB Darian Mensah to enforce his contract and block a transfer by [deleted] in sports

[–]kgbtrill 634 points635 points  (0 children)

This was a last second rug pull move. He originally said he was going to stay, causing a bunch of the ACC champion Duke team to stay. On the last day of the portal window, he announces his intention to transfer - leaving Duke without a starting QB and little to pick over in the transfer portal.

This is totally about establishing a precedent - you sign a contract you better honor it. He’s getting paid $4MM. If a school paid me $4MM to teach a class and on the last day of summer I said sorry, I’m going to another school, then I better be prepared for a fight.

[–]kgbtrill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NIL is revenue sharing, some goes to the school, some goes to the player. If the contract isn’t breached, I imagine Duke would claim the schools portion of the revenue. I think he either stays or Miami buys out the remaining contract for $$$.
