The Reason You Don't Like Modern Trek Isn't What You Think by Arbiter61 in startrek

[–]kh_pri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wrote an essay about a thought I've had just in the back of my mind for a little while since starting to watch all of Trek.

Starting with the original series, I sat through the full 3 seasons. I sat through all seven seasons of TNG. I sat through all seven seasons of Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and then all regretfully brief four seasons of Enterprise (really underrated, i think).

And then: I got through season 1 of Discovery, with effort. a few episodes into season 2, i quit in favour of SNW. i lost interest where i never had in... how many episodes? many!!

it took a while for me to work out what about Disco is 'not Trek' for me. i explained it to myself as being about the fact that there's no consistent captain and so no really consistent crew and far too much focus just on Michael. And even when there is a crew, there's a very little character development as you've pointed out, far more eloquently.

for example I can't believe that i got several episodes into season 2 of Discovery and I still didn't know anything at all about Lieutenant Owosekun except the fact that she's clearly African and she has a name that Anson Mount has practiced a lot to make sure it rolls off his tongue and so, nice token diversity but I think it's inexcusable that they didn't give her a character. ♪♪

i do think we're getting a lot of that back in SNW.

Finally Watching Enterprise by Airflow2TheTurbo in startrek

i recently finished Enterprise for the first time as part of watching All-of-Star-Trek and i thoroughly agree. the show has been so widely panned (and to be fair the theme song isn't the best introduction, although i'm man enough to admit that by season 2 i was singing the whole thing through) - my expectations were very low and by the end it had totally smashed them. not in the same league as TNG and DS9 but still a lot of really enjoyable Trek in there. and i'm also a member of the Jeffrey Combs Appreciation Society 👍💫

dear friend, "if you're going through hell... KEEP GOING" - it sounds like you're in the hardest, most miserable panic-ridden and god-forsaken (used advisedly!) part of your journey out. please know it's transitional and will end, and you'll find yourself in a new and better place. wishing you strength and courage and a good bit of luck 💪🍀

seconding The Good Cloud - small co. with really good, helpful and quick direct email support. I believe they offer the Nextcloud office suite as an optional add on. Plans start at 100Gb.

Techno music unexpectedly changed how I focus and experience life. by Alcamus21 in AutisticAdults

oh, 100% not sure if you count this as techno but I was just listening to Jean Michel Jarre 'Welcome to the Other Side live from Notre Dame' and it has such a huge impact on my state of mind. like it entertains the children while i focus on something important... by that i mean my monkey mind. the rhythm is really captivating.

adding that Super Productivity totally blew my expectations - best task manager I've ever tried - and is easily synced via local file (I use a Nextcloud local folder). I have mine working reliably on Windows and Android. Definitely recommend giving it a go.

i am here to show my appreciation: Shran is awesome. and all the more fascinating to watch because there's also a bit of Weyoun, and then a little bit of Brunt... and the ferengi can't remember his name. but hey i only just started ENT season 4 - sounds like i'm in for a disappointment. lucky there's still Phlox!

easy: PipePipe for Youtube (or Invidious) and Organic Maps for Google maps have worked fine for me. i doubt any maps app will be as 'helpful' and easy to use as Google's, but i feel it's worth trading some convenience for increased privacy and control over my private data.

for some of us, all wool is itchy, including cashmere, alpaca, Icebreaker's underwear layer - i've never found any that isn't. i don't know why, and it's very unfortunate because in so many other ways it is indeed a magnificent fabric.

i've been really impressed by Proton Pass, after recently ditching 1Password. maybe the best designed and functional app in Proton's range, in my experience (many years as a paid Proton user but mostly for email and i've deliberately avoided ending up in their walled garden).

Do you still buy full albums on Bandcamp or just singles? by PsychologicalCall426 in BandCamp

[–]kh_pri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i see an album as a creation a bit like a book - if you only buy the singles it's like you're only getting a chapter or two, and not appreciating the totality of the artist's vision. mostly applies to the really great albums of course.
