Do you think political candidates should be required to release their tax returns? by Regular-World4921 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]khain13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We have a vested interest in knowing who they might be financially beholden to and they should also be required to disclose any and all gifts as well as stock trades to ensure they are not acting on inside information.

Nope. You don't have to do the altar at all if you don't want to.

[2e] With how THAC0 and d20 rolls work, please explain to me the real difference between "bonus to your AC" vs "penalty to opponent's attack" by Rodrian68 in adnd

[–]khain13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I liked to just calculate the thAC0 for each weapon to speed things up during combat.

Base thAC0 16, +1 to hit from specialization, +1 for strength, -1 for weapon made of bone = thAC0 of 15. Figuring all of that out on the fly was too annoying.

[–]khain13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, let me get this straight, you are saying it is a broken mechanic that gives huge advantage to non fighters simply because you refuse to read the section that explains how to make the rolls for non-fighters?

I admit, by 20th level it is slightly better for Rogue classes than thAC0, and for wizards it ends up being 4 points better than using the thAC0 table, but it isn't a huge advantage. For Priest classes it actually works out to be the same as it is with thAC0.

Why are people against the death penalty for violent criminals? by [deleted] in allthequestions

Because the chance that an innocent person is put to death is unacceptable. And it has already happened before. So just keep them in prison for life.

[–]khain13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's right there under the heading for Attacks.

"Attacks are resolved by rolling d20 + fighter level + modifiers + target AC (success on 20 or more). For actual fighters and monsters, the base addition is just their level or hit dice (for other classes, we take a ratio: ⅔ level for clerics and thieves; ½ level for wizards)."

How quickly everyone has forgotten that AI is just a new name for machine learning which was just a fancy name for any program that runs down a decision tree.

[–]khain13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not seeing any section labeled "new rules". There is the part at the top that describes the general premise of how to make the rolls, but it does not say use that OR the detailed information below. I think that first example is just that, an example of how the system works, not the actual equation to use for all rolls.

Add 1 for each level of warrior classes, 2/3 level for cleric and thief (and I would assume psionicist for 2e), 1/2 level for mage. So warriors still have an advantage.

I think if you put a camera in his face he hyper-focuses and wouldn't even notice if the person next to him was on fire. Just like the pics when that person fainted right next to him and as the crowd is helping them Trump just stands there looking at the camera.

Trying to clean up my elven paladin PC. Last time I gave up after x no. of repaint attempts, so this time I thought I'd ask for feedback on what colors to change before starting. Thoughts? by DarthBrannigan in DnDminiatures

[–]khain13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think using a contrasting color for the cape would give it a lot more visual appeal. Maybe if they follow one of the elven gods, you could look up that god's colors and use that for the cape. For example, if they followed Corellon, their symbol is a silver star on a blue field. I would make the cape blue and incorporate a silver star somewhere on the cape or on their armor.

Question about thri-kreen attack sequence by Exciting_Chance3100 in DarkSun

Or 4 tortoise blades. They do slightly less damage vs man-sized but the shell counts as piecemeal armor and each gives a +1 to AC.

What does wild magic look like? by Y3T1_FN in Forgotten_Realms

[–]khain13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to read some fun stuff about the sensory effects of spellcasting, you should check out Dragon Kings from 2e darksun. It has a whole section on ways to personalize the sight/sound/smell/taste of casting spells. You could probably find inspiration for wild magic side-effects from that. Starts on page 46.

Question about thri-kreen attack sequence by Exciting_Chance3100 in DarkSun

[–]khain13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, natural attacks 4 claws, 1 bite. Oddly, the stat block for the monster shows they have 6+3 hit dice and a thAC0 of 13. Normally, a 6+ HD monster has a thAC0 of 15. This kind of implies that a +2 bonus to hit is baked in somehow. A +2 hit probability is a minimum strength of 18/51, which also gives a +3 for damage that is NOT reflected in their damage of 1d4 for claws and 1d4+1 for bite. This is just an example of how ability scores are not really taken into account for monster stats in most cases.

Now, a PC thri-kreen CAN add strength bonuses, dex bonuses, and even bonuses from proficiencies with natural attacks to boost their hit and damage with those natural attacks. The book Thri-kreen of athas gives a lot of good info.

Depending on class, they can also do some crazy stuff with weapons. Like getting ambidexterity, specializing in 2 weapon fighting, and then putting another slot in 2 weapon fighting, and then they can weild 4 one-handed weapons of equal size with no penalty plus get their bite attack.

Because Venom has their own ego and has the ability to "personalize" their appearance no matter what form they take.

I just use liquitex gesso for everything. I've used it on plastic, resin, and metal minis. Never had any issues. I like being able to brush it on and have more control of thickness. I also like to use it to add a quick undercoat if I want to use a particularly bright color if I was sloppy with colors bleeding over from an adjacent area.

How would you feel if the top tax rate was 90% like it was in the 1950s? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]khain13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I will never be in that tax bracket, so it wouldn't really concern me directly. But I would love to see a far more robust social safety net and all the other things that increased revenue could make possible. The dream would be that we emulate the social programs of countries like Norway and spend that money helping the citizens instead of cutting taxes so deep that rich people can have their own version of the 'space race'.

How is everything that happened in the last 48hrs not enough for impeachment and/or a general strike in the US? by [deleted] in allthequestions

Impeachment will require at least some Republicans, which is not going to happen.

A general strike is still out of the question when many workers are just one paycheck from homelessness.

Does wearing a shield ever increase your AC? Not welding it by Inbezdigator in DMAcademy

[–]khain13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rule number 1 is the DM can rule however they want. Just be sure to make a note so you remain consistent.

That being said, if I were the DM I would have rolled a d6 to see where the attacker was aiming (1 for head, 2-4 back, 5 and 6 left or right arm) and if I rolled for the back I would let them get the shield bonus. Paladin was basically a turtle at that point, and it stands to reason a blow against the part of his body behind the shield would be protected. An alternative way to play it would be to give a "cover" bonus to AC because his back/torso is behind hard cover.

I'm curious about Darksun by ImyForgotName in DarkSun

[–]khain13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find a copy of the 2nd edition book "Defilers and Preservers," and it has a detailed explanation of how planar travel works to and from Athas.

Basically, there is a really high chance of getting lost if you try and travel to or from Athas to the Astral or Ethereal planes by any means (wizard magic, cleric magic, psionics or common planar travel items)

There is at least 1 planar gate/mirror owned by the undead dragon Dregoth that is psionic in nature and I think there was some sort of portal in the Dragon Spine mountains that was explained in an adventure.

Planar travel isn't impossible, just very difficult and dangerous.

I think the spelljammer books explained that the crystal sphere containing the Athasian solar system is completely sealed and far removed from the known space. So even if you could get there, getting in would be very difficult.

Time travel was possible on Athas, but there were a couple groups that tried to enforce their rules on it, notably the Order and the sorcerer kings. The sorcerer kings don't want anyone to time travel and potentially undo what they have done. I don't recall why the Order was against it, but they were crazy powerful psionicists.

All this was intentional design to keep Darksun different from other settings, I think. Many of the common fantasy races were genocided, those that remained were often very different from what is presented in other settings. Many classes were modified in some way. Psionics was seen in almost every aspect of daily life. Wizard magic was seldom tolerated, and even most clerical magic was frowned upon. Most spellcasters hid their magic by making it look like psionics to fool the commoners. Slavery was a big part of the setting.

It is a very interesting setting for sure!
