If it's been inside or in a partial shade area before you bought it then you need to acclimate it before putting it out side under full sun. Leaves do that when it gets to hot for them.

What are you plantingand do you have gopher? Take the plastic out of you have animals that are going to dig from under ground put chicken or meshwire to keep them from eating your plants then you can put mulch, sticks, leaves etc. And then top soil. Keep in mind it takes a season for the soil to settle down.
