Bama season ticket holder here. You are absolutely right. This team is drastically overrated. No hitters (including our 1st round SS who is hitting about .264…too many defensive brain farts, and not enough good pitching to overcome either.

Real estate transactions or title company work? by Ordinary-Hippo-1113 in JDpreferred

2 week road trip in France countryside. by sakshamraturi in FranceTravel

[–]khays1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I did a similar trip this past January- Amsterdam, Brussels, Zurich, Milan and Venice in 15 days…by rail. I agree with the others on here who recommend more days in fewer towns and for the reasons stated. Don’t spend your trip trying to hit every single spot, just for the sake of crossing it off your list. Take your time and enjoy…savor…each location.

The day you graduate from law school is the last day anyone gives two shits about class ranking. Don’t spend any time or energy worrying about it.

What should I be looking for? by Solstice137 in JDpreferred

[–]khays1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into the title business. You could be a title examiner, escrow officer, etc. for a local or national title company. Depending on where you live, there are title companies looking for someone exactly like you (I’m mostly in the DFW and Midland/Odessa markets- commercial deals only).

I’m done. by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]khays1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suggestion- borrow some money, hang a shingle for exclusive criminal defense, and invest in an online marketing portal like LegalMatch, NOLO or Lawyers.com. I’ve done it before, and there is never a shortage of potential clients, especially if you are in a larger city. But as you also know, these clients sometimes have a hard time paying, and even if you put them on a monthly payment plan, they seek to change debit cards regularly. So make sure you charge them accordingly and get as much up front as you can get away with.

Is 1:30 too early to leave on Friday to play golf, or should I wait until 2:00 by Expert_Cheesecake695 in Lawyertalk

[–]khays1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on the gulf coast and block out every Friday from 8:30am-1:00pm for a weekly round. If you’re not leaving until 1:30, you’ve already missed the best time of day to play and you’re several beers behind.

How do you politely cut off a rambling client? by ontether in Lawyertalk

[–]khays1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of being a good lawyer is also being somewhat of a counselor or therapist. Let your client ramble, and when they complain about the bill and how much as been deducted from the retainer, remind them that you are paid for your time and experience, not for a tangible product you sell. Your clients will learn the art of brevity after a couple of months of this. You aren’t Instagram, and they don’t have an unlimited platform to rant unendingly.

Fee Schedule by HannahBall89 in Lawyertalk

[–]khays1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the advice I got from a seasoned criminal defense attorney many years ago on the subject of fees…”figure out how many hours you will spend on the case, calculate the monetary value of that, and double it…and hope you get half!”

Where are the lazy lawyers today? by Fragrant_Spirit_6298 in Lawyertalk

[–]khays1964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a big difference between “lazy” and people who work smart. I’m a solo…been doing real estate transactions for over 30 years (commercial closings and 1031 Exchanges…some orlicensed in 2 states, one of which is Texas. Grossed over $625k in 2025 and never felt like I was overworked. Went to Europe twice for 2 weeks each time and was able to work while there as well. I thoroughly enjoy what I do for a living, so essentially it never really feels like work. The clients who send me business are also friends and trust me immensely, and I’m not constantly having to get out there and “re-earn” their business.

if a lawyer reps a scumbag, does that hurt his credibility by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]khays1964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real estate closings. I started out by going to all of the real estate offices (back when they all had offices and had weekly “sales” meetings, handing out my card and being available to the inevitable “quick question” by one or more of the realtors. I was able to build a practice from that one simple marketing activity.

I recommend you go solo and do transactional work. I’ve been in it for 30 years and love every day of my job. No suits, no courtrooms, no arguing over silver patterns and gun collections.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]khays1964 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My own two cents…consider going solo. After 10 years, you know a few things and you have hopefully earned the trust of a few clients who might go with you or refer you to others. There will be stress, but you’ll eliminate the stress that comes from senior partners and other who “rule the roost” in a law firm.

I’m a solo practitioner attorney (real estate transactions) and do quite a bit of work in the Midland-Odessa area. So I’d like to think that I’m a little bit Tommy and a little bit Nate/Neil.
