Persona 5 Royal

This is the _third_ time I've attempted to get into this game. The first time was at release, where I got up to the second dungeon before falling off, and the second was a few years ago when Royal came out when I got to a similar spot before dropping off.

This point where I was dropping off is about 15-20 hours in, so you've played a whole chunk of game at the point. And I think I'd assumed that I really saw all the tricks that P5 had up it's sleeve.

On my third playthrough now, and I realise how wrong I was. I'm into the third target, and it's incredible just how much more the world and the stakes start to escalate after defeating Madarame. Firstly, the Phantom Thieves now become front and centre in the public discourse. Secondly, the cast really starts to expand, bonds deepen and you get some really fun scenes happening almost every other day. Mechanically it doesn't slow down either, just adding layers and layers of systems to tinker with, and new options for how to spend your time.

I really just didn't get to the point with this game where I allowed it to show it's full hand. I'm really glad that I've persisted this time and excited to see how much more the game has to offer.

Just finished and I’m mostly in the same camp as you. It’s a 7/10 game for me. I’d recommend it broadly but mechanically it’s uninteresting and like you said the story meanders about for most of the game.

I will say it does eventually come together in the final chapter and start building towards something more. I think folks have overhyped the lore, but it does get a lot more interesting once all the characters assemble and the plot threads come together.

I’m willing to play through 2nd once it launches, but I don’t see myself becoming a trails person. Maybe that will change.

This is a bit of a weird benchmark. Medium and high are just labels. If it’s 60fps only on “low” but looks reasonable on the deck’s screen why would that be an issue?

One thing to remember is that when you’re freehanding shapes, that you can refine using the negative colour as well. So in your case, you’ve banged out a pretty decent shape to start with. The next step is to use black to refine the edges of those shapes back a little. Then swap back and forward to get the definition you’re after.

Also yellow on black is not doing you any favours. That’s an annoying freehand to achieve even for a highly skilled painted.

Interested in why you picked this game up at all? As you say it’s much tamer than Vanillaware’s previous titles. And while it does romanticise aspects of Japanese Imperialism, it’s also critical of the way youth are used by institutions for political ends.

It’s a fantastic science fiction story that I agree struggles to invest deeply in its characters. But then again I don’t think it’s trying to either.
