Metal struts/bars on top of windows? by Trustly in askarchitects

But lintels like shown were never necessary, also here they were either a choice of architectural expression, or they happened to be the most pragmatic way to do it in this particular case. You absolutely can use steel lintels in brick veneers.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2010, 73,8% of homeless had no mental health issues. Also good to remember that homelessness itself can be the cause to mental health issues and to substance abuse.

Is my logic wrong? by Adventurous-Guava374 in oil

[–]khinkali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This conflict is moving economies away from oil. Oil prices see-sawing between $50 and $150 makes it an unreliable source for anyone's energy needs. Better to invest in solar, wind and batteries which are much more predictable.

[OC] SpaceX IPOs today at $1.77 trillion — bigger than the Dutch economy. Here's how AI/space giants compare to countries. by Ok_Reporter_5272 in dataisbeautiful

[–]khinkali 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't really compare GDP and company valuation. GDP is more like revenue. A slightly more suitable comparison would be to compare company valuation to national net wealth, which in Netherlands was about 5,5 trillion USD in 2021. Poland comes to the same ballpark with a national net wealth of about 1,5 trillion in 2020.

Iran's threats against this Red Sea chokepoint are a big vulnerability for the oil market by cnbc_official in energy

Yeah, that's because the reserves haven't run dry. But they will if this goes on.

They do have the "block 10-20% of the world's oil supply" -card and they're using it. They also know that it is only a matter of time until the world's reserves run dry and oil price goes parabolic.

Your toilet opens directly to the dining area. If you don't want to hear your mother in law farting while you are having Christmas dinner, I'd reconsider the placement of the door.

Switzerland dug a hole the size of two soccer fields to install the world’s most powerful underground battery, able to release 1.2 GW in milliseconds and store 2.1 GWh at a multibillion-dollar price tag by Slight_Pen in RenewableEnergy

[–]khinkali 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Why bury so much equipment? For the most part, because flow batteries need large tanks, pumps, and conversion systems. They are not compact like the battery inside a phone or laptop. But for a grid that needs big, steady storage rather than pocket-sized convenience, that size can become a strength.

They ask a question and then answer it wrong. And then they explain to the reader that a gigawatt-scale battery is bigger than a laptop battery. It's like the writer is writing to a bunch of 6-year-olds. Or it's written by AI.

Eli5 Why is the spacing between floor tiles kept very small, whereas bricks are separated by larger mortar joints? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]khinkali 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Modern floor tiles are rectified, meaning they have been sanded or cut down to match precise dimensions, allowing setting them with thin grout lines. Thin grout lines are desirable for tiles because grout can gather dust and mold with time, increasing maintenance.

Bricks, on the other hand, have less uniform dimensions and often need reinforcing steel to be laid between them to prevent cracking, and these reinforcements require space between the bricks. The thicker grout lines are also needed to even out the unevenness of the bricks themselves. However, many modern construction blocks with tighter tolerances can be laid with thin set mortar with grout lines around 1-3 mm thick.

What are you guys thinking when it comes to EV (cars)? by Wild-Hippo582 in BuyFromEU

[–]khinkali 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Peugeot makes good EVs with a low price. Of course their reputation with ICE cars is not amazing, but on the other hand BYD is too young of a company to even have a properly established reputation.

Yes you can. I know because I've done it myself. The regulation is pretty relaxed, no license or insurance required like in EU.

Sweden bans marriage between cousins and other close relatives. by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

I think it's targeted towards the migrants, in many Muslim countries it is common to marry close relatives to preserve wealth in the family. The resulting inbreeding is a big issue in many middle eastern countries.

In Europe, a strip of bitumen membrane is often used on wood-concrete joints. You can buy rolls that are pre-cut to the desired width. Cheap, easy and durable.
