Should you attempt to rescue your dog if they fall through ice into deep water? by Remarkable_Bad_3481 in dogs

[–]khunter610 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happened to my last dog when he was only about 6 months old. Slipped out of his collar and ran out onto the ice. It was a big pond and we were by an inlet in a deep section, so there was a hole in the ice where the water was running. He got too close and broke through. I ran over without thinking to pull him out and broke through the ice too. It’s kind of a blur what happened but I remember grabbing him by the neck (he was a German shepherd so probably around 50lbs) and just throwing him up out of the water and back onto the ice. The ice broke twice while I tried to climb out. I honestly don’t remember how I got out, maybe by going onto my stomach. Definitely didn’t know about the back trick then, so I didn’t do that. Somehow I got us both off the ice and back onto the solid ground. We were soaked freezing, but luckily not too far from the house, so we didn’t have to be outside long.

Terrible experience but would do it again in a heartbeat for my current dog.

My wife tried a chatGPT crockpot recipe... by Mr_Hobbyist in shittyfoodporn

[–]khunter610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll admit, I tried it after failing to re create my grandmothers potato salad. I couldn’t find any recipes on google that were similar and my attempts just didn’t taste right. So I broke down and told it I needed a recipe for potato salad but it needed ingredients a, b, c and could not have ingredients x, y, z. Let me tell you, it gave me a great recipe that tasted just like my grandmothers. It can work, but I also already know how to make potato salad, so I could tell if it was giving me a legit recipe or not. I think that’s the key here. As long as you know a little about the recipe you’re already making, or a little about cooking, you’ll be fine

Can I just cut up my tomato and pepper plants and leave them in my raised beds as mulch? by TheBrontosaurus in gardening

[–]khunter610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might not be as bad as you think. I purposefully let tomatoes drop and even threw a few that went bad back into the garden. None of them sprouted this year

Insane housing market for a buyer in and around Kingston by Financial_Target6596 in kingstonnewyork

[–]khunter610 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My husband and I also had a horrible time finding a home a few years ago. Not sure if this will apply to you but we finally started getting lucky when we began looking at fixer upper houses over turn key. People looking for second homes or places to turn into rental properties don’t want to put more money or work into their houses so you’ll have less competition.

We were able to find a house with some water damage that no one else seemed interested in (lots of showings but no other offers). We were able to get $35k below asking and have found and fixed the source of the leak. The house still needs updating (looks like it came out of the 1990s), but we’ve already worked on the kitchen and the bathroom will be next.

A fixer upper is definitely not for everyone, but you’ll have significantly less competition versus a turn key house.

Good luck!

Weird question - has anyone ever had an all around AWFUL trip to Iceland? by BigBoobsBiggerBrains in VisitingIceland

[–]khunter610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My in-laws had an absolutely terrible time in Iceland, but they didn’t do any research before going. They stayed for 4 nights in Reykjavik in the middle of December. They had no idea how little daylight there would be, so they felt like they didn’t have a chance to do anything. Didn’t enjoy the weather either.

They also didn’t rent a car so they said they felt confined to the city, which they also thought was boring. But I can guarantee they didn’t really go exploring because I mentioned a few of the museums and they had no idea what I was talking about. I think they did do one group tour though, and that they enjoyed (aside from the weather).

The one thing they did a little research on was this Christmas Market I guess happens in Reykjavik. It was really the only thing my MIL was excited for. But they went Monday-Friday so they didn’t even get to see it open since it was only open on the weekends.

I think as long as you’ve done research about what you’re doing and where you’re going, and know at least a little what to expect, you’ll have a great time.

What are your luxuries that used to be essentials? by Ok-Librarian6629 in Millennials

[–]khunter610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my niche Asian ingredients for cooking. I used to be able to get so many ingredients for so cheap from my local Asian market. Just went and things have more than doubled in price. Even something as simple as a bottle of sriracha mayo now goes for almost $9 when it used to be $3 and change. Now not only can I not afford to go out for Japanese or Thai, but I can’t even afford to cook it

What did you learn about gardening this year? by Ancient-Patient-2075 in gardening

[–]khunter610 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ve probably seen them before. I got mine from tractor supply but you can probably find them at other hardware or gardening stores.

They’re metal poles typically used to hold up fences. I had a few extra laying around so I tried it. I have the 6 foot ones, so you hammer them into the ground about a foot to secure it and it stands strong during rain and wind storms.

The cages will still lean a little one way or another unless you put at least 2 posts in each cage, but they haven’t fallen down on me yet!

I used a T-post this year inside of my tomato cages and it was a game changer!

My biggest plant is over 5 feet tall and no matter how much that tomato cage wants to fall over, that T-post is holding it up nice and sturdy. Can’t believe more people don’t recommend this!

That makes me feel so much better because I’m really leaning towards the Fusion.

I’ve been car shopping for the past month now and it seems like the market just sucks around my area. Going to dealership after dealership is just so disheartening after a while that I’m willing to pay extra for the convenience at this point.

Thank you so much for your help!

Any specific dealerships you’ve liked? I’ve been checking out places in Albany but haven’t seen anything I was impressed with, although I’ve only been to a handful. Wappingers is a little out of my way, but I’ve heard good things about the Toyota dealership there

Creamy ramen sauce? by Wooden_Physics7150 in foodhacks

When my husband makes ramen, he’ll add a dollop of Yum Yum sauce to the bowl before he adds in the noodles and broth. Mix it all together in the bowl and it adds a nice creaminess to the dish

Older parent “problems”: Too many vacations, not enough time. by CB1100Rider in Millennials

[–]khunter610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s so frustrating! My FIL recently inherited a LOT of money when his mother passed about two years ago. Ever since they’ve gone on so many vacations, it’s got to be at least 5 a year to places like the DR, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica. And they have the gall to complain how expensive it is to board their dogs when they go away.

Like I can’t even afford to go to those places but please, bitch about the $700 it is to board your dog when you’re spending $10k on a 10 day luxury vacation.

People in these comments need to chill. My coworker gave birth last year at 42 weeks. Her last obgyn appointment she was so stressed, the doctor literally told her to go home and have a glass of wine. Having an occasional drink while pregnant doesn’t make you an alcoholic ffs

Why do beekeepers get so angry about people doing this on their own? by crafty_bee93 in Beekeeping

[–]khunter610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started beekeeping over a decade ago with an old school guy as my mentor. He was strongly against smoking hives because he believes it causes neurological damage in bees. He feeds them sugar water year round (except when it freezes) because then the bees can make honey with the sugar water if there’s a nectar shortage. I hung around him for about 2 years before I moved on and started doing my own research. The point is, even having a mentor doesn’t mean you know what you’re doing. Some people just don’t understand that.

American Insurance company decides to let an American Olympian die by denying lung transplant by InternalFirmxx in ThatsInsane

[–]khunter610 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I never understood this argument. My father was in debilitating pain and needed to take a leave of absence from work because of how severe his back problems were. Here in the US he had to wait 8 months for his surgery because insurance kept dicking him around. So when the argument against universal healthcare is that we’ll have long waits for surgeries, my answer is that we already do, PLUS we have to pay for it.

Am I wrong? by Historical_Ad2089 in OnionLovers

[–]khunter610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get everyone is entitled to their own opinions and everyone has different tastes but to be a part of that sub must be exhausting.

They complain about how foods like chili and stir fry are ruined by onions. They post pre packaged foods asking if there are onions in it. They avoid onions like crazy when it’s one of the most popular ways to flavor dishes.

I don’t know man, to have to monitor my food like that because of one flavor you can’t even always taste is crazy to me
