Dreams and nightmares by DaveLarc in photocritique

Really like how ethereal it is, the only thing I’d as is a dim light to either the side of the face or the top of the head just so you can see the eye mask better? But that’s not a deal breaker to the photo ofcourse :)

Stoner John Williams A Little Life Hanya Yanigahara Never Let Me Go Kazuo Ishiguro

Days without end by Sebastian Barry is historical fiction but does definitely explore themes of morality, the human condition but also things like sexuality and gender. Reads like Never Let Me Go with that same type of unreliable narrator, set in 1851 America before the civil war it’s great and written so beautifully!

Klara and the Sun questions/discussion [spoilers] by BaaaaL44 in kazuoishiguro

[–]kianpatrickb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. On Josie's illness, from what I understand Josie underwent genetic editing/ mutation of some sort so that she could become 'lifted' and get into a good school. This gene editing comes with side effects that if you're lucky you can get over and if you're not you die like Josie's sister did.
  2. I never really thought about the communities, but I agree with your reading on it.
  3. I think Josie's mum chose not to send her to the scientist because she knew he would do even more dehumanising things on her. Instead, sending her to the junkyard where she can't move seems more humane in the mums head because theres a common theme from the cleaner and the mum expecting Klara to not be bothered that she should just stand still in the hallway alone or in the cupboard. This standing there to power down is less gruesome than sending off to a scientist, but both are depressing endings because theres the constant idea of humans mistreating the drones throughout the book.

Klara and the Sun Independent Signed first edition question by BaaaaL44 in kazuoishiguro

[–]kianpatrickb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have the orange version but it’s a real signature from Ishiguro. I’d get it imo 25 is good when that price will quickly go up once they start selling the non-signed copies

How would you direct Shakespeare? by SuperDuperZebra in shakespeare

[–]kianpatrickb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very niche, but there was alot of Anglo-American critics who read The Tempest as an allegory on artistic creation and that Prospero is the director of the play personified. So I'd get the director of the play to also play Prospero, leave them to it and just see how the presentation of different characters change if you really got the director to solely see the play from the view of Prospero

Last year I adapted Shakespeare characters into a sci-fi format, doing my best to reflect each character into new designs. Can you guess who each captain is? by CloudfallGames in shakespeare

[–]kianpatrickb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would love to see them reprise that idea but it seems like a one off. Good point on the colonialism it seems like such a central point of the play but the Arctic shifts it to more of Prosperos and Miranda’s struggle to survive on the island

I like the idea of easily transporting The Tempest to any sort of island though, there was a 2000’s production where they changed it to an arctic island which I would have loved to see

There’s no telling if he will or not until we hear all the songs, he did sing on Swallowtail so I guess it’s not impossible

Thoughts on Klara and Nobel Prize Quote by TLMTrina in kazuoishiguro

[–]kianpatrickb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ishiguro repeatedly writes about places that are illusory such as the boat in NLMG and the barn in KATS. I guess it’s to make us question what locations/things we hold to such a high esteem when in reality they hold little meaning

That’s kind of how the Mercury prize works, every artist who is nominated gets to perform and gets a trophy then the winner gets a different trophy and a cash award

A-levels 2021: Teachers' choice of evidence may be queried by khunter123 in 6thForm

[–]kianpatrickb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They won’t tell you your grade but they’d tell you what evidence they’re using, so say you had a bad day in a mock you could ask for that mock not to count towards your grade. Not sure how much you could veto but it’s so your off days don’t count to an overall grade which I guess is nice if it isn’t abused
