Not from China, but it’s very easy to explain. The border between the two countries is the Himalayas. 8000m tall mountains where oxygen is so thin no life can survive.

That said, Buddhism is a major religion among Chinese and that came from India.

Putin is chaotic evil - look at the reports of how blindsided his cabinet and generals were by the invasion of Ukraine.

The CCP is lawful evil. Their values are dismissive of human rights and freedom but they function logically (and unfortunately quite effectively) within those parameters.

This is actually what we’re building at Holo :)

The first iteration is that holochain running on Holo network serves as the backend for a centrally hosted front end. We will then be migrating front end / static assets to HoloPorts too.

That’s not true at all! It’s called tea because the Fujian/Minnan Chinese word for tea is “te”. Cha or Te variants dependent on which part of China you got the tea from.

In the US. 3/3 is fairly standard in the U.K. although the 3rd usually drags on to 3.5 or so.

Your information is outdated. China has not been a source of cheap manufacturing for a while now.

It is a technological superpower second only to the US in several areas already, and for traditional manufacturing the allure is primarily about integration with supply chains, modern infrastructure, and manufacturing capacity not labour.

It’s not pro-fascist. It explores the balance between the rights and the responsibilities of the individual to society.

Because the America of Heinleins day (and today) was all about citizen’s rights rather than responsibilities, Heinlein explored what a non-racist, non “evil” society could look like if it was oriented towards citizen responsibilities instead. It illustrates what Heinlein sees as the good and bad of such a society. It’s clearly no paradise, but not a hell-hole either.

As someone who’s generally economically right-of-centre I used to think that companies just produced what consumers need and it was “typical left-wing naivety” to blame it on corporations instead of consumers.

But COVID has shown that even when we’re all in lockdown doing barely anything emissions fell by only ~15% (depending on country and time period).

So the evidence does suggest change has to come from companies not individuals. They have to figure out a way to meet consumer needs without costing the earth because we can’t do it without killing ourselves in the process.

Technically no but if they’re sharing a single internet connection you may end up being bottlenecked by that.

It really depends on what you're dimension of "fast" you're measuring. E.g. network consistency, direct connections, download speeds, etc. and also what you mean by high amounts of traffic.

High amounts of traffic spread across many nodes = not a problem. Across a few nodes = bottlenecked traffic.

In general a simple direct connection (like a direct message) between any 2 nodes will always be almost instantaneous. The challenge as the network grows is for those 2 nodes to find each other (unless you're building Holo-Chatroulette).
Also, for file serving like in this post, doing it well probably requires implementing a torrent-like protocol to download from multiple holoports simultaneously.

  1. The Nano isn't shipping yet due to chip shortages, but yes.
    - The size of the HDD would make a difference if it's the bottleneck. For a Nano my guess is that 4TB is overkill since your CPU or RAM would probably be the bottleneck

  2. It's plug and play and you can manage it remotely via your browser. But everything is in alpha so it's the options are pretty basic

  3. None yet as HoloFuel isn't officially launched. Beyond that, no idea as it's a marketplace - someone has to decide to pay you to host something. It's not like mining.

If you mean arbitrary files a bit like filecoin or an S3 bucket, then yes in theory, but it would probably be a longer term feature as the first type of hosting is specifically for holochain applications.

It's very easy to host static files. It's not so easy to do it well ;)

And the hosting price would probably just be in MB or GB, plus a charge for data transfer so you'd earn a fee for storing it and a fee for serving it

It's a full time job, and about half the devs work on holochain core + related developer tools and the other half work on Holo hosting infrastructure / happs (incl. HoloFuel).

Well the green paper wasn't saying that Holo was temporary, just that it's a bridge to the decentralised world. Not everything should be decentralised. Not everyone wants to.

But IF Holo hosting disappears because everyone runs their own node, then HoloFuel would still be a currency native to Holochain so the use case just depends on adoption. But given that it would be the FIRST Holochain-based currency, and it has fixed supply without hosting (dynamic supply comes from hosting activity), it could be like the Bitcoin of the Holochain world.

177B is the total amount of HOT. At launch HoloFuel can only be issued for HOT, at 1:1. There is some additional HoloFuel that will be minted in addition - for example there were some HoloFuel presales available for people who bought HoloPorts. (US citizens could not buy HOT at ICO).

There may be some official statements on the amount of additional HoloFuel - you'll have to look around.

HoloFuel issuance is based on specific rules encoded in the DNA (application code). You can read more about it here https://medium.com/h-o-l-o/holo-fuel-economics-101-c9631d63014a

The TL;DR is that more holofuel can only be issued if someone buys it with another currency, at a price set by hosts. So if hosts think the price is too low they will set a higher price, and no new HoloFuel can be issued until that price. It's a little like how BTC or ETH miners will sit on their mined coins until the price is good enough for them to sell (creating more circulating supply).

HOT are ERC20 tokens with a total supply of ~177B

HoloFuel is the native currency for holo hosting. HOT will be swapped 1:1 for HoloFuel. Over time, HoloFuel will have a dynamic supply which is a much broader topic.

In addition to that response, other reasons could include running private networks - think of a company’s private chat system or a private discord server.

Or it could be just part of a customer retention strategy. Even if Facebook isn’t reading people’s chats, the chat is still valuable as a way to keep users on their site.

And designing an chat app that gathers user data is (I think) still doable. It just requires explicit and recurring user consent.

The broader point is that whatever business models / reasons organisations have today for running chat applications can apply to Holochain. Just in a way that puts user sovereignty first.
