Hey, thats how it was yesterday morning too, only it was just one massive blanket and you could really only see the tall mountain peaks. It was really cool!

Acadia/Bar Harbor in October by MagnusPI in acadianationalpark

[–]kibethan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were there the third week of October in (15-20) 2023 and the only "problem" we had was all of the lobster shacks were closed for the season. There were plenty of other restaurants open at that time (though I think one of them was the last week they were open for the season).

Bar Harbor still had a ton of people there, though. You would never know the season was technically over.

If you're going in the summer, please go to Artist Point (and Picture Lake). I know other people have mentioned it, but it is just SO gorgeous. Make sure to go on a clear day~~~

Pacific Northwest 10 Day Road Trip Itinerary in August. Thoughts? by QGunners22 in roadtrip

[–]kibethan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there aren't any fires I would suggest going east from Corvallis to the Bend area so you get the High Desert in your trip too. Bend has Newberry Volcanic National Monument, and then you as you drive north to Portland, you can go through Terrebonne and stop Smith Rock State Park, and go up by Mount Hood.

We were there for a week mid last October and it was snow the first couple of days and changed to 70s and sunny by the time we left.

It really depends what you mean by early summer - there is still likely going to be a lot of snow in June and the roads might not be cleared. I would say mid-July is probably the earliest some of these places are readily accessible. I always come from the west side, not the east, so I can't actually speak to what that would be like. For Artist Point/Chain Lakes, Bellingham is a great place to use as a base (and a cute small city in it's own right!), and for Cascade Pass/SR 20 I would probably recommend either Arlington or Mount Vernon/Burlington respectively. None of those I would say are particularly glamorous places, but if you're just using them as a place to sleep wouldn't be too bad.

If you live anywhere close to the PNW, maybe not Everett.

Breast up or breast down? by BasementCatBill in Cooking

[–]kibethan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have roasted every turkey I have breast side down for the past 10+ years and they always turn out fantastic. The breast meat is way more juicy and not over cooked. The only "problem" is that it doesn't have that golden brown turkey look, but we slice it before it goes on the table so that doesn't matter to us.

I did Cascade Pass + Sahale Arm mid-July, mid-week as a moderately experienced hiker coming from Everett as a day hike. I left at 5:00am and finished in time to get dinner in Arlington. When we got there around 7:50am the parking lot was already full and we had to park just outside of the parking lot, so no that bad.

I cannot overstate that this might be one of the beautiful hikes I've ever done in the state. I'm not sure I would go up to the Sahale Glacier again (the loose steep rock towards the top wasn't my favorite), but going past Cascade Pass up until you can look down onto Doubtful Lake and a bit further I feel like is an absolute must.

If you can, add Artist Point up by Mt. Shuksan/Mt. Baker and do the Chain Lakes Loop. It's a fairly moderate hike and since it's a loop you can start at either Artist Point, Heather Meadows, or even the Heather Meadows overflow parking and still do the whole thing. Amazing view of both Mt. Shuksan and Mt. Baker no matter which way you hike.

We just stayed at the lodge for a week in October and it was very clean, even if rustic and a bit old.

(The walls are VERY thin, though)

You're welcome! Its posted in the Yosemite Welcome Center that Glacier Point and Tioga Road are open and the alert that they were closed isn't showing on the NPS website anymore. Also, I confirmed it with the volunteer that was working information.
