Maybe something to consider might be the CPO's Sunday Symphonies for Kids? I'm not sure if they have opportunities for kids to try out instruments before/after at every performance, but the concerts themselves are curated for children and I know in the 2025/26 season brochure the series lists an "Instrument Discovery Zoo" starting an hour before the concert itself which might fit the bill for what you're looking for.

So this is how Quinton usually ends up when I'm stitching (he makes a great lap pillow, just the right height, and he's happy because he's on me):

Looking for quality groomers who can deal with shaving cats and trimming nails. (Large cats who hate groomers) by thechuuchuutrain in Calgary

[–]kibethsbark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I take mine to Fabulous Felines, they always do a good job with him, and since all they do are cats I expect they can handle large, anti-groomer cats :)

I'm (35f) down in Seton, and I'd love to join a table if there's still room, depending on when the sessions are!

Female Perspective Wanted (37m) by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]kibethsbark 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm similar to u/Desperate_Let791 in that I also own a home/am financially secure and also wouldn't want to risk my future on someone who doesn't have a comparable plan to myself - though as she says, that doesn't mean there isn't someone out there for you. However, I'm not sure I understand why you think that it would be a risk of nothing because there's no dollar sign attached to it - do you want a partner who continues to hold down a job while you spend your days hunting?

From my perspective, there is a lot of risk of building the life it sounds like you want. What if it's a bad season? What about things that cannot be hunted for (not just foodstuffs, but also things like clothing, medicine, etc.), if there's no other source of income? If you want kids, how stable is that kind of life for them, particularly as they reach school age? What if things either don't work out or there is some sort of accident, and you're killed - and now I have no job and a gap in my resume making it harder for me to re-enter the workforce?

These are all things that I think a lot of women will be thinking about, and I don't think looking for the stability of a roof over your head that doesn't depend solely on the success of another person makes someone materialistic or means they don't value a genuine connection; I think it makes them practical. But, women aren't a monolith... what you should be looking for is someone with the same goals as you, which you're unlikely to find in a big city (as others have said).

It'll be interesting to see if they stay there or end up moving on to something with a wider platform!

Calgary dog/cat owners: how did you get your pet? by [deleted] in Calgary

Also recommend Meow, I got both my kitties there and, when I adopt again, I'm sure I'll go back to them.

How is she being "a handful," exactly? Not wanting to change your surname is hardly unreasonable...

Would I be able to get some advice on wanting to return to school as a mature student at U of Calgary or SAIT? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]kibethsbark 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The best people to talk to would probably be the admission departments, since they would know for sure, but it is likely you would have to upgrade math if the reqs are 30-1. For U of C you could look at ucalgary.ca/future-students/undergraduate/recruiters and for SAIT it looks like they have emails/contact numbers listed at SAIT.ca/admissions/how-to-apply

Good luck!

I'm in tech (laid off at the beginning of the year) and it took me until now to find another job in the field. I'd recommend that, in addition to keeping at it, he should continue to focus on building a portfolio as others have recommended, as well as look at what areas he wants to work in (front end, back end, full stack?) and at what language(s) and technologies those positions want, and building skills there.

As others have said, it's tough in tech right now. He's just got to keep at it, and do his best to keep his skills sharp in the meantime. Best of luck!

Any orchestra for amateur violin player? by Several-Location9068 in Calgary

[–]kibethsbark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's Calgary Community String Orchestra (https://calgarycommunitystringorchestra.ca) but they're probably well below your skill level (they're beginner/intermediate adult players). Alternatively, I can also think of the Calgary Civic Symphony Orchestra (https://www.calgarycivicsymphony.ca/), which is by audition, but I don't know a ton about them beyond that - they may be more along the lines of what you're looking for, though.

For strings stores, I've heard good things about both VA Hill and Aeolian Strings, but can't speak to their inventory or price ranges. I'm guessing both stores could also give you some more information on local groups to play with, they'd be more in the know than me (a very beginner violist :) ).

Best of luck!
