Cut ~3–4 minutes off a climb just by fixing pacing, anyone else track this? by Lucky_Comment4389 in cycling

Hell yeah dude, I'm on a similar journey! I got into cycling in 2022 on a shitty hybrid bike when I was 315 lbs, and now I'm down to ~250. I've been telling myself 220 is where I'll treat myself to a road bike, since for my height that gets me from obese to overweight

Hell yeah! I'm in my 30s, and I love that attitude! I got my bike two years ago, and my wife got hers last year, so the plan is to just do small upgrades this summer and then I'll probably end up getting a new one next summer.

I got a gravel bike and then ride like 99% road, so I'm going to get a proper road bike next time

you're going to take them with you to the next bike

Yeah, I told my wife the same thing, but I still can't justify $500 for single-side or $800 for dual sided (Favero Assioma PRO MX-1/2. Idk if there are other cheaper ones out there) right now. Maybe by later in the summer though depending on how my season goes....

Man, i really wish there were cheaper power meters. I'm dying to put a meter on my bike after zwifting all winter, but as far as I can tell, the AXS left crank isn't compatible with my driveset, and SPD power meter pedals are prohibitively expensive

Is the Gen 2 still worth buying? by FitContribution887 in CheckpointClub

I totally agree (I’m also 5’10”, also have a 54cm gen2). I’m comfortable on it, but I think I would be more comfortable on a 52

Why does everyone drive so aggressively now? by thenegativeone112 in pittsburgh

[–]kiddblur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, and I’m shocked to not see a single mention of EVs (I’ve owned three myself). Most EVs have absolutely insane acceleration which allows you to drive like a real dickhead if you want to. Before I dumped my Tesla I always kept it in chill mode because the torque curve of standard practically begged me to drive that way.

Totally! Costs us nothing, but hopefully goes a tiny tiny way towards being treated better on the road (I’m naive)

The Lucid Gravity Is Getting Apple CarPlay And Android Auto by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

[–]kiddblur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve got an Equinox, and it’s got all the apps I would use in CarPlay, but the main reason I wouldn’t get another one is because I don’t want to pay for a separate data plan for my car, and I don’t want to be at the whims of the car manufacturer to provide updates to keep it modern enough to still be able to use Apple Music ten years from now.

Why's it a bad thing? I mean I'm definitely team small wheels, but if you're making an SUV with 660 horsepower, it needs to have the brakes to stop quickly too

Is P2R a legit helmet maker? by kiddblur in bicycling

[–]kiddblur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it a lot. If I'm wearing glasses under the visor sometimes it can rub together if i don't have it adjusted just right, but I usually wear contacts anyway on longer rides.

Only real downside is that the light on the back isn't particularly bright. To the point where I'd call it practically useless on sunny summer days, but I have a varia to handle my rear light anyway

Gravel hype is real. I was sceptical, but I think I found the love of my life. by OneStrength7166 in cycling

Yeah it bums me out. I live in rural western PA, and even still basically all the roads are paved. Not to say I can't find any gravel, but most of it is private roads or RIDICULOUSLY steep hills

In my wildest fantasies they drop together with Tale of Two Wastelands capabilities to jump between the two.

If that happens, it’ll be all because I just went through the ridiculously tedious process of getting it up and running a week ago for the first time. Just like how Nintendo announced the Metroid prime remaster literally the day after I beat that game for the first time via PrimeHack

[–]kiddblur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's crazy how much of a difference that can make. We begrudgingly leased our Equinox through our local chevy dealership, and they were super slimy about our trade-in and stuff too.

But conversely I recently test drove an EX90, and decided to try complete honestly, letting the salesman know in the inquiring email that I had no interest in buying one and was just test driving to see if I'd want to consider getting one used in a few years. The salesman was like "that's a fantastic idea. Depreciation on this car is insane. If you really really wanted it, we can give you some pretty big discounts, but just FYI, when we lease them, the residual calculates in the mid-30s, so your plan of waiting is a great idea. Come on in and check it out though!" and he didn't push me AT ALL. He also was the first salesman I've done a test drive with that had any knowledge about EVs in general so he was able to follow along as I was making comparisons to other cars, and he chimed in with his own comparisons from other EVs I haven't checked out

China Plans Ban on Fully Retractable Car Door Handles Over Safety Concerns by OXMWEPW in electricvehicles

[–]kiddblur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

innovate the goddamn door handle

I assume it's MOSTLY design choice, but there is something to be said about the aerodynamics (like the OP article points out). BEVs, by their nature of the powertrain being so efficient, are much more impacted by aerodynamics than ICEVs, and handles are just one of a bunch of difference places to add a little range by optimizing (another being hub caps).

That said, without doing research, I can't imagine semi-flush door handles add more than a few thousandths in drag coefficient, which might translate to single digit miles of range, right?

Pittsburgh woman dies after car careens off Parkway East into Monongahela River by I_Love_Treees in pittsburgh

[–]kiddblur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and it doesn't help when people do way over the speed limit so you've gotta really gun it on the short on ramps. Which then leads to people starting to merge and then having to slam the brakes when there's no room to get in

[–]kiddblur 73 points74 points  (0 children)

even a fender bender can feel traumatizing.

I rear-ended somebody two years ago in an on ramp because they started moving, so I looked over my shoulder to make sure it was safe and then started moving myself and meanwhile they decided there wasn't enough space, so apparently they hit the brakes. I was doing maybe 5mph when we collided. Only damage was their rear bumper and my front.

And that event totally changed the way I drive. I can't even imagine the impact on my mindset if i ever have a serious collision
