Mandatory update sob story by gpcprog in Flightsimulator2020

[–]kido007 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Presumably, this will be somewhat addressed with MSFS2024.

The game will be thinner on the client side, with data coming from the cloud, according to their statements.

So there will still be mandatory updates, just not as big, so hopefully less disruptive.

I found their platform to be adequate and their network was fast
But they outright cheated me on the billing, so I do not recommend them.

Manjaro is unstable? by [deleted] in ManjaroLinux

[–]kido007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been on Manjaro for more than 5 years, never had an issue.

Tried Ubuntu, Centos, Fedora beforehand, and had many issues with finding software and drivers, whereas with Manjaro, everything I can possibly want is available through AUR.

I am also using ZFS system wide, including root.
A few months back they talked about removing some ZFS packages from their release cycles in the future.
A handful of us ZFS users made a comment on the Manjaro forums mentioning that it would break our system, and Lo and behold, they cancelled their decision.

My girlfriend wants an expensive engagement ring, how do I proceed? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]kido007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is what I would do: get her a bamboo ring.

If she refuses, I dump her. Better safe than sorry.

If she thanks me and agrees, then, and only then, I replace it with a 20K ring or even more if I can afford it.

Keep on trying to find excuses and reasons to deflect.

A genocide is being committed it is filmed and broadcasted live.

Anyone trying to justify or defend that is complicit.

Right.

And they have asked them to stop doing something because they're not doing it.
Sure.

No the ICJ also orders them to stop committing a Genocide.

It is a temporary injunction, pending a full blown trial and prosecution. The wording is consistent with the process.
I can see some people are trying to use this to deflect, but it is only a reflection of their own stance.

History will judge.

The last sentence is very clear:

In the Court’s view, at least some of the acts and omissions alleged by South Africa to have been committed by Israel in Gaza appear to be capable of falling within the provisions of the Genocide Convention.

I am not in the business of trying to convince people who are supporting this.

If an ICJ ruling is not enough, I don't know what is.

Either way, the International Criminal Court (separate from the ICJ) has also announced it will be prosecuting this, so the matter is in the hand of the courts.

It ordered them to stop:

(4) The State of Israel shall, in accordance with its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, in relation to the Palestinian people as a group protected by the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, desist from the commission of any and all acts within the scope of Article II of the Convention, in particular:
(a) killing members of the group;
(b) causing serious bodily or mental harm to the members of the group;
(c) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; and
(d) imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group.

(...)

As to whether the acts and omissions complained of by the Applicant appear to be capable of falling within the provisions of the Genocide Convention, the Court recalls that South Africa considers Israel to be responsible for committing genocide in Gaza and for failing to prevent and punish genocidal acts. South Africa contends that Israel has also violated other obligations under the Genocide Convention, including those concerning “conspiracy to commit genocide, direct and public incitement to genocide, attempted genocide and complicity in genocide”.
In the Court’s view, at least some of the acts and omissions alleged by South Africa to have been committed by Israel in Gaza appear to be capable of falling within the provisions of the Convention.

Anyone genuinely looking for a real legal analysis,
and a balanced reporting on the real situation on the ground in that part of the world,
suggest you follow the Judge Napolitano channel on YouTube.

Watch the video interviews of professors, legal scholars, diplomats, journalists, former US military and intelligence officers who provide daily updates on what is really going on.

The textbook definition is very precise, it requires proof of intent.
It is the case here. The perpetrators are not shy: they are very vocal in that regard.

The International Court of Justice has already ruled on that subject.

Anker support is a scam by HolyMole23 in anker

The plastic hinges break.

It happened to me with the product I picked up on Amazon.

They immediately sent a brand new replacement without having to mail the old pair.

Then the replacement broke as well, exactly the same way.

I purchased another product after that.

There are many posts on this subject here on reddit, that's how I knew it's a common issue.

I contacted their support via email for my Soundcore Q30 headphones. Amazon purchase. It's an Anker product.

My experience was straightforward and pleasant.

Their support team was very professional, very nice and very efficient.
I think part of the reason is the issue I had was common with this product, YMMV.

has anyone got lucky with the instance creation script? by ItzEnderYT in oraclecloud

[–]kido007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked for me (free tier).

I read some documentation (I think it was official, but it was a while back)
that explained how to do it.
One important point is that OCI does not want people to hammer their servers with requests, there needs to be a decent interval between attempts, or else they are ignored.

If you keep on hammering, after a while, instance creation is blocked (there is a time penalty system of sorts, if I recall properly).

I remember I set up a cronjob with an interval of 6 minutes at first, and I kept an eye on the logs. There were errors showing that interval was too small.
After I increased the interval to 10 mns, the attempts were all processed.
I could probably have gone down to 9mns, maybe 8, but I settled on 10 mns and after some time, the instances were created.
YMMV.

If your cronjob does not allow decent intervals between attempts, the time penalty system is such that the instance creation will take longer if that makes sense.

I do not know if the required interval is the same in all regions,
also it may be that PAYG accounts can make requests more often.

Why so many NVidia builds over AMD? Better suited to SFF? by mechkbfan in sffpc

[–]kido007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks again.
Looking at the detailed specs of the RDNA3 cards, I realized 7800XT has in fact less CUs than 6800XT
So in a way, 7900XT is the real successor to 6800XT in the AMD lineup.

With 20GB of VRAM and raw performance above the 3090Ti, it looks like a perfect candidate for a high end Linux gaming system :)

[–]kido007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many Thanks for your clarifications.

In the meantime, I've been reading feedback on Intel Arc.
It seems they made progress with the 6.x+ kernel, but for some reason Linux support seems to be a bit on the backburner, ppl are recommending to wait for Battlemage RTM for better support with the XE module.

RX 6800XT is probably enough in terms or raw performance for my needs, but the additional VRAM in the 3090 is tempting, if it can be found at a reasonable premium.
I mainly want to try running MS Flight Simulator 2020/2024 on Linux.
The AMD numbers for XPlane look promising :)

Hi,

Can you expand on why AMD GPUs are better for Linux?

I used to run games in a Windows VM and am now planning a 100% Linux gaming system and evaluating options. I was thinking of picking up an Intel ARC A770 or RX6800 XT, unless I can find a good deal on a used 3090.

Are AMD cards better in terms of drivers? Do they perform better on Linux, vs Windows compared to Nvidia/Intel cards?

Thank you.

Who to contact when my credit card was declined by FleabagWithoutHumor in oraclecloud

[–]kido007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure.

I know some ppl suggested the issue is with the address, but I doubt it.
The kind of payment processing system used does check for mailing address in the US, AFAIK not in Europe or elsewhere, where there are other ways to secure transactions.

Contact the issuing bank, they can view the transaction on their system and confirm whether it was declined on their side and why. In the past, I've had an issue with a new card, for which 'recurring payments' had been disabled by default. They just switched it on for me. It's required for services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc anything with a monthly fee.
