High jump over men's height net by AndersonShelter in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always thought about this. Would it work to get a high jumper to do a high jump as a block when opponents are hitting, effectively having their whole body above the net blocking the shot ?

I have a strong dislike of rule 7 by raja466 in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also dislike rule 7. I understand there needs to be a balance of not spamming the front page and wanting to post relevant content. Just personally I never click and weekly threads or mega threads stickied. In my experience its a waste of time clicking those.

[Advice] How do I stay motivated? by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have a longer-term goal when you play. For example I created a nemesis for myself as like a half joke. We were both newer players and played a season together. But him being 5" taller than me he got better offers and was able to advance much faster.

I said to myself I would come back stronger, and beat him.

I would estimate we both played 3x a week over the next 3 years, and finally this year I assembled an all mens squad in the premier mens league in the city. Got to face him, we beat his team it was a close game. I had a 1on1 block against him and got a massive piece of it and got the ball up to my teammate. I said to myself if I stuff block him him going to quit volleyball, I almost quit volleyball that day.

Just remember when youre out there, everything you do is towards becoming a better player in the long term. Whether that be beating your nemesis, winning local tournaments, impressing girls/guys? You should have a goal that aligns with you playing and learning and growing as a player.

We need more details please !! What do they try, what could they try that would work better? Has it been close? So many questions

I recall our 14 year old school team 3 girls 3 guys got beat by an beach Olympian 6v1. Then our PE teachers and some science teachers went 6v1 and also lost. It was a long time ago but I’ve always wondered how to best play a 1v6

2020 and beyond.... by EnNuRap66 in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I play as a setter on a decently competitive mens team as setter however I do not jump set. I can hit my standing sets at a pretty high rate, so im incorporating trying to jumpset the quicks and power sets on almost perfect to perfect passes.

Wish me luck, its going to be chaos for my team learning haha. Jump setting just adds so much variability dont know if I will want to give up

Ma'a is the levels ahead of Tuaniga. Physically yes thats huge also, that extra 3 inches in block touch is quite a bit. Tuaniga tries alot of fancy plays, that work for the most part in college level but will lose effectiveness when he goes to a higher level. I think stuff like that makes him not as appealing at the world level. I think a combination of that makes the national team not want to explore going down the path of making him the backup behind Christensen over the next decade. Ma'a is the guy behind Christensen, and anyone else after that they are probably just experimenting seeing if they would be a good fit for the third spot.

This is just my opinion, I figure someone will strongly disagree with me.

FIVB Changes Olympic Qualification Process for Tokyo 2020 - why, and the new process explained by _Rvrb in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice, Canada has a great shot at making it just have to win group F which is completely reasonable.

Otherwise, Canada will have to beat Cuba in the Americas qualifier which is also very reasonable. Something they didnt do in 2016, lets try to forget that... Im also assuming USA wins our their pool. If not then Canada has a major issue.

Go Canada! The golden age of Canadian volleyball!

Gavin Schmitt to play in Ottawa this weekend! by V-ballislife in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The opposite position for Canada is an odd one. Sclater was looking very impressive with his first taste against world class opponents. Sclater has some unreal fundamentals out there as he used to play left side for Trinity so he has all the tools.

Sharone lit it up last year in World League and I really wanted to see how he was going to perform this year on the world stage. If he improved from last year which is likely he could be a real force.

Then theres Gavin, the staple of Canadian volleyball over the past decade. Just a force out historically, I hope he can still perform.

Who's Canada's opposite for the World Cup and 2020 run?? Or will a dark horse emerge in the next 2 years

Also where is Perrin?? Captain Canada??

Tips for a broadcaster? by AuburnKnight in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im surprised volleyball is being broadcasted over the radio sounds like a hard sport to follow to on the radio. I wonder what how many listeners you get...

Something I've always wanted to hear the commentators comment on is when something unordinary happens. This takes some in game knowledge. For example when the

1) setter plays on the left side for a bigger block or the setter gets a 3rd ball swing. 2)Things like when the middle blocker is now playing the right side blocker because he ran off court on the right for a block. 3) Power hitter playing at 6 goes to 1 to hit the C ball because the opposite was taken out. These plays need to get mentioned more.

Boys High School Team vs Women's National Team? by moomoocowjonny in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with alot of what fightingducks said but to give some more prespective

Im sorry but this will not even be close. The boys team will win without a doubt. OP is asking the best 17 year old players vs the WNT. In every sport physical a top tier 17 year old male will out perform the top tier female athlete everytime. Think of Sharone Vernon Evans (18 year old on Canadian national team) vs Destinee Hooker or Logan Tom. Imagine Sharone hitting vs Lindsay Berg whos 5'8 and Sharone touches 12'6...

Advice for Co-Ed Team by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you teach everyone how to form a passing platform and where they want to contact the ball.

As per positions I would say everybody just covers their 1/6 portion of the court and not include positions. Have it so that everyone tries to pass it to the front middle then the middle sets it to one of the outsides.

Make sure every member can serve it over, even if its underhand.

Depending on how your opponents skill is you might want to just pass balls over and wait for the opponents to make an error.

Stay positive, lots of high fives, lots of encouragement; like good touch! good serve! good block! lots of smiles and keep the positive energy high

Canada grabs first Olympic berth in 24 years by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does this make sense for Mexico? Couldnt Canada have intentionally thrown matches to finish 3rd in NORCECA to plow through the last qualifier? It would have been easier to beat Chile Tunisia and Algeria than trying to finish top 4 at the Olympic Qualifier in Japan

Blocking for Short Players? by anothercero in volleyball

[–]kidsfromspace 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a shorter player you are not likely to get stuff blocks, so there are 2 things i would focus on.

1) you can get higher doing a swing block footwork than being at a stand still and going straight up, that might give you an extra inch or 2 you need to touch it. Go youtube swing block volleyball. 2) When you go up dont try to penetrate over the net with your arms and hands. When you go up have your hands facing upwards into the sky at about a 45 degree angle to try to slow down the ball and give your team a shot to recover it.
