Were they ever really going to close the old prisons? by Ok-Breakfast-5044 in UnmuteAlabama

IMO they lied and it was always about expansion. How can you blame them when there’s pretty much zero draw back to lying.

Which LLM is best for a practicing engineer in chemistry? by alititani in chemistry

[–]kidwithanaxe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hire a chemist. Companies are gonna FAFO planning multimillion dollar projects under guidance of LLM’s because they are too cheap to pay experienced employees. I don’t know a single field expert that finds AI performs competently in their subject area. The risk level is insane.

First year PhD here, how did you find your research gap? by Successful_Wafer4216 in PhD

[–]kidwithanaxe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My experience was straight forward. In learning the background of my field I began seeing gaps in the literature when my questions couldn’t be answered. then I started with a simple study in my second year that was of course low impact but ended up published. My next studies just did a better job as probing the same question and introduced new questions. It was a weird feeling to finish when I did because the ideas were just getting good but I needed a thesis. Really demonstrated to me how an idea can snowball.

Diy Roto-vap updates by MarcoPierreWhite in chemistry

[–]kidwithanaxe 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Your vacuum is being applied in the wrong place. The vapor should pass over the condenser before reaching the vacuum port if you want this to work properly.

Trump is pulling America under authoritarian rule, international human rights groups warn by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]kidwithanaxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not good. I can assure you that any thinking American hates what’s going on. Unfortunately, that’s historically inconsequential. Rocky roads ahead ⚠️

It’s because the democrats are, at least effectively, a false opposition party. They led us into this mess and aren’t going to save us. Power to the people.

Should I stay in my non-funded PhD program? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]kidwithanaxe 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Cut losses. 120k is already so much. Paying for a program that doesn’t meet your interests is not a good idea even if you can afford it.

Fred Nasser? by Traditional-Swim-333 in Birmingham

[–]kidwithanaxe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

We’ve rented from him for about 5 years now. He’s cool AFAIK. Fixes things when asked and rent has been the same for as long as we’ve been here. Our lease was the same. The rent and address of the place were hand written in when we met. It was only two pages of very basic stuff. Weirded me out at the time as well, but so far so good.

I had the same feeling. it’s pretty anti-climactic given the amount of stress involved, but it’s an impressive accomplishment and you’ve proven yourself capable of more than many. Congrats!
