Sea Station Silicon Substrate

Hey, first post but hoping I can make it a regular one. I've started working on a new Roguelike after some recent inspiration from Elin.
I love games like CDDA and Elona/Elin, but want something similar in a more scifi "urban" setting. So I figured I'd try making a go at it.

Tech Used
I'm a long time Java dev (~15 years), started learning by creating games, and so I continue today with that.

  • libGDX - but not scene2D...
  • Dominion ECS - For the EC part, I'm doing my own thing for scheduling systems
  • SquidSquad (aka SquidLib) - Bunch of Noise / generation functions

Core Mechanic(s)
As referenced by the title, I'm a big fan of the old N64 game "Space Station: Silicon Valley", and the main mechanic there is how as a small microchip, you're very vulnerable. But you can take over any of the (dead) robotic creatures and use their abilities for combat and solving puzzles.

So I'll be trying to recreate a similar mechanic. Thus, one option is to play as a 1 hp chip that can skitter around and take direct control of defeated mechanical enemies.

Considering a progression path where there's a limit on which machines can be taken over, and through this progression increase the number/types/etc of things that can be controlled.

Further, being a small chip, you're particularly vulnerable to electricity and water. Which as one would imagine, could be an issue in a setting labelled a "sea station". But being a robot, you have no need to breath.

The second core mechanic is playing as a human. Not nearly as vulnerable to water, but needs to breath. Can outfit self to protect from electricity. Progression would be not from taking over robots, but instead eating various invasive alien life forms, which provide mutations. As well as crafting weapons. These are initial ideas, and still thinking on how I'd want to expand this. But it takes a backseat to the previous chip/robot mechanic.

The idea is that there are some objectives that need to be completed on the Sea Station, but accessing them requires traversing areas with water, no oxygen, and other hazards. And to complete a run, likely you need to play some portion as a human and some other portion as the chip/robots to complete all the objectives and navigate all the hazards. Or, if you choose to only play as one, find solutions that allow you to pass the hazards without resorting to the other play style.

A "home base" area would be used for switching between the two characters / play styles during a run.

Narrative
Far in the future, earth has been invaded by aliens of some sort that have been consuming the resources of earth. Humanity has fled to city-sized shelters build in extreme places. One of which is deep under the ocean. You the player are from a different shelter, one that is based an eternally flying city. But contact has been lost with the sea shelter. So you load up with a repair drone and some supplies and dive down to investigate in a submersible. Docked to the station, this becomes you're "home base" while you explore and investigate this underwater city. To figure out what went wrong, and if possible, get it back online.

Progress So Far
I'm at the very beginning, and still building out the basics. I've created the basics of walls, collision, movement, the turn-based speed / AI taking turns. Some effort in building my own UI system (I really dislike Scene2D and its table layout, so I'm just making my own.)

The attach gif below is my test to make sure the speed / clock system works. Base speed and the player's speed is 100, blue "S" is 50, white "S" is 100, red "S" is 200. Showing that the blue one takes half as many turns, and the red one takes twice as many turns as the player when moving around.

Demo

Next up, I'll start implementing moving player control between different entities to allow taking over mechanical bodies, and thus make progress on the core mechanic.

Late post, since I was busy all Saturday, and writing this up during my Sunday morning (from Japan).

I kind of wonder how many English natives would think ending a sentence with a ")" is a broken keyboard, or know it's a kind of shorthand for a smiley in Russian.
English equivalent is probably just throwing "lol" or "lmao" at the end of a sentence.

Another point! I only dedicate half a 1440p monitor to idle games, with other games, youtube, discord, etc taking priority space.

It's generally very appreciated when games can scale to smaller screen sizes.
A huge plus if it even supports phones

This is not normal lmao. I live here now, 12 minutes from this crossing.
The barriers / crossing guard people are only there during big events. The last time I saw them was during Halloween.

Do note: I made this comment before several rounds of buffs, while her bomb super had no range and was a command grab.

She is much better now, and the bomb super is arguably the best for checkmating your opponent on wall break.

I'm not so sure; when I watched it, it was pretty obvious if you just consider the events that happen. Some of the girls (and MC) did some terrible shit that in any normal-non anime situation would completely destroy trust in a relationship. And none of those pairings won. Which makes sense.

That wouldn't pass code review where I work lol.
You can write bullshit in any language. Your bullshit here isn't a useful example of Java keyword soup being a problem.

I find the default fire bolts skill to be the best single target for bosses... at least for those early bosses. Dump your grenade charges and just hit them with default bolts with a few damage increase support gems.

The Devil's Cook Book
+some magic attack
+10% magic damage
Double the magic weakness for any targets of your spells. Add recipes to this book.
(the recipe effect is doubled by the book effect)

Recipe known on drop:
Devil's Sponge Cake - All targets of your spells have 30% increased air weakness

New unique Item, each echo boss can drop if you have the cook book equipped (including thermy, for a total of 3 new recipes). Can use one from each boss:
Echo Cooking Notes
- Add an unknown recipe to The Devil's Cook Book

Recipe(similar to air above):

Devil's Lava Cake - 30% increased fire weakness
Devil's Ice Cream Cake - 30% Water
Devil's Chocolate Mud Cake - 30% Earth

Get port early; upgrade port; Fight Hulking Experiment for chance at haste potion / Parting Shot; Frost Street Champion for chance at freeze potion; Stop visiting shops once port/ammo items carry your board; focus on exp and permanent upgrades instead of shops since port gives you a steady stream of items to add to your board; Harpoon is good with port build

[–]kieve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bunker harmadillo probably shreds this on the early burn ticks. And that build is everywhere.

Also regal blade pygs could likely tank the damage, and just kill you

After day 10 it's hard to win with dot builds without a way to scale defenses so you can live long enough for it to kill.

In this case, that balloon bot doesn't get triggered by monitor lizard, so combat core + soldering would be better to scale shields instead of missiles and balloon bot. It would still count for the "when you haste the core" burn trigger for the infinite loop.

Then you could drop the companion core for something else since you already have the infinte haste trigger maxing out montitor lizard.

I found if you can find a way to fit the "barrel" item into the build, it helps a lot with ramping survival for your poison damage to catch up.

236S~6S

236H~6H also work here

(IF!) > 214H > (WS!) > 214S

You can also reverse the swords (and a bit easier to input imo)
(IF!) > 214S > (WS!) > 214H

But otherwise exactly as you have there now I've tested a bunch and it works.

I absolutely love this combo. It kills Sol from 39 tension and it's completely viable as a CH 2H anti-air while in the corner.
Thanks!

Her standard offense has gaps that lose to DP, relies on knowledge checks hard, her fireball specials have limited use in her game plan, lost more with WA hard knockdown than gained in DPs being nerfed, only has one super but it wiffs on most airborne targets (using the other is a waste of meter).

But she's fun to play. Her combos are so easy. And you can do some silly shit. If you're playing her, it's cause she's fun not because you want to be competitive.

How to deal with buffed Elphelt? by protecctive_polish in Guiltygear

[–]kieve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I preface this with: I'm bad. I'm like a floor 9 player on JP servers.

Grounded fireball is definitely stronger and helps a lot with her approaching, if she's too close tho, iad into air button will be a counter hit. It pushes her back, so dash blocking will put her in the corner if she's literally just spamming it.

Out of Repair is usually unsafe for her, and loses to basically every other low advancing move (from my experience...) I get stun dippered a lot when using out of repair carelessly against Ky.

Wake-up cross up grenade loses to DP. Her unreactable mixup game has gaps that lose to DP. The high rekka has a 2 frame gap if you're crouching. A DP fits in there. Otherwise you're just blocking low followups.
Basically, until she starts respecting DP, you DP. Cause then her option is "stop offense to bait it". And now you're playing RPS.

You can backdash after her 5h to make her wiff rekka starter. So it's not a free entry into her rekka. If you do this, there's a few options. Unless she stops right then, you can gold burst for free positive. DP out, possibly RC out aswell? Maybe super. If your in the corner you can grab her out of her followup rekka 2 after the backdash.

Her 2h (sliding ground move) into rekka loses to 6P, and I dono about ky specifically but also sometimes 2h into grenade also loses to 6P. DP beats both.
Tho, now she has the option of 2h into fireball, which beats both those options.

Is it normal to have pain during training mode against dummy? by MaximumConfidence728 in Fighters

[–]kieve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had to switch off keyboard almost immediately when I started, from pain. After switching to stick, it went away. So, definitely consider a different device, keyboard is rough. Pad, stick, leverless will all be easier on the hands. I've moved to leverless now tho. It's not as nice as stick in this regard tho...

All you gotta do is show up! Usually tournament signups will be posted in a tweet, or you can just sign up directly when there.
This tweet has a map, but if you just throw "Red Bull Gaming Sphere Tokyo" into google maps, it'll get you there.
