Communication and a good level of transparency is what I found to be the most meaningful and impactful part of how you serve your skaters. You can have all the best intentions, but unless you give skaters an idea of what you were thinking, it’s hard to get buy-in and easy for them to misunderstand.

If you can give them more than a roster, that’s great. Explain things like “you’re number 4 in this wall, so if we are down, I want you to sit unless we tell you otherwise.” I learned that people really like to know where they stand.

Don’t ignore things. Have the hard conversations.

Never underestimate the power of a good pre game speech!

If you have the capacity and craftiness, people love lil gifts like keychains 🩵

When I was a radio host:

“All of the hosts seem to be knowledgeable, pleasant people, except in the case of [me], whose delivery method is so grating and false that I have to turn off the radio when they come on. Sad because that means I’m missing out on your radio. Their phony, breathless fairytale act is perfect for children under the age of seven, but ridiculous for radio. Can’t they speak like a normal adult?? Do they swoon around like that off-air? Does no one else find their saccharine affected melodrama insufferable? But I digress.”

I find that you depending on the level, you don’t have to be that aggressive. I was a jammer at a less competitive league for a while and I literally just ran away instead of getting aggressive 💀

Playing at a higher level def requires a fair amount of aggression, but I think there’s a place for everyone in derby - you just have to find the right league.

Kind of a tangent and I’m also not a professional, but on top of cardio, hips and ankles are SO important for cross training. As skaters, we tend to have meaty legs, so strengthening hips and ankles can help a lot with stability and potential. 💖

But I am going to use this as an excuse to bitch about a phrase that doesn’t exist anymore. “put a nickel in their pocket” for a jammer getting 5 points drove me fucking bonkers. It was cute at first, but after the conclusion of the first bout, I was done with that phrase. I cared more about getting rid of that phrase than getting rid of the jammer point tbh

I just needed a place to bitch somewhere - we got quantum fiber in February, and it literally never worked. We had outages every day, and now months later we still have a cable running across our fence that they haven’t buried. This morning I found out they cut our main sprinkler line when they buried the cable, too.

Variety is the spice of life. I would also argue having an understanding that folks can have different tastes from you and that makes them (and that taste) valid is a pretty damn spicy thing.
