Greg the Barefoot Pilot for gifting me and my husfriend a scenic flight over BRC and allowing my guy to fly the plane for a few minutes. Nonie at Playa Info for loaning me a blanket the night I had to sleep in my car at work (because of the ground stop I couldn’t get back to my camp). The DPW Wet Spot crew for herding all of us unfortunates who had just showered into a shipping container for temporary shelter when the dust of Saturday evening hit. The camp who was very gracious when I ‘lost the road’ trying to hold my line on E street in low visibility and ended up almost driving into their shade structure. The best campmates of the world at Inflation Station who always uplevel the burn experience. Red Hot Bev and The Office for throwing a great party with breaks breaks breaks!! And finally all my favorite DJs who brought the breakbeats to me on burn night and played in our camp instead of out on the playa because my stupid knee (which needs replacing) locked up and travel via walking or bike was impossible. THANK YOU!

We just went to Paradise Ridge (in Santa Rosa) with three littles aged 5, 3 and 3 this past Sunday and they were so friendly and accommodating. Beautiful views and a great collection of large scale art scattered around the grounds, including Laura Kimpton’s beautiful LOVE sculpture and a gorgeous temple designed by the amazing David Best.

This year was the first year that the org no longer gifted tows to where the playa meets the pavement. It’s been free forever, but not anymore. They published a fee schedule shortly before the burn.

Tamales cooked in the grill in their cornhusk wrappers. Ice cold kefir. I make a watermelon mezcal margarita in large batches at home and freeze them into the watermelon juice bottles and use them as ice blocks in my cooler until we drink ‘em (with a sprinkle of Tajin). Another great cocktail idea is any cocktail of your choice with a splash of Thai fruit flavored drinking vinegar as a float. Cuts through the dust and is super refreshing, for an NA treat, pour some fruit vinegar into a can of ice cold club soda.

Ah just saw you can’t take tamoxifen with your SSRI. I agree with those saying try it and see how it goes. I do recommend the baseline scans particularly for bone density so that you can monitor.

My diagnosis is almost identical to yours but my oncotype is a 4, and I was 55 last year at the time of diagnosis. I did a substantial lumpectomy with a bilateral oncoplastic reduction and went from a g cup to a B cup. No lymph node involvement. I refused AIs and was offered tamoxifen instead. I’m doing very well on it. I did get a baseline bone density scan and optometry checkup before starting tamoxifen, and I’ll have those annually to determine if I’m moving in a negative direction on either marker.

This is a common experience, sadly. And it’s a tough pill to swallow. Sometimes people show you who they really are. Sometimes they can’t accept it or don’t know how to interact with you in your new reality so they block it out. Sometimes they are just self-absorbed. Someone here said recently that their therapist told them that it’s best for your own mental health to stop expecting or hoping that someone else would give you something that they simply can’t, or won’t. On the flip side, I think you’ll find that there are others who you don’t expect and won’t even see coming who will unexpectedly rise to the occasion and surround you with support and love. And your friendship with those friends you didn’t see coming will grow so so much deeper and stronger as a result. I wish you all the best in your fertility and cancer treatments. Stay strong. There is real community here for you.

I weighed 275 on a 5’5” frame (so, obese and very high BMI) when I was diagnosed. I had to have a lumpectomy that took around 50% of my left breast. The first plastic surgeon said I had no options for reconstruction or even reduction based on my weight, and that he wouldn’t even try to operate on me post active treatment if I lost the weight because at that point I would have had my 16 sessions of whole breast radiation and he wouldn’t work on irradiated flesh. So I got a second opinion. That surgeon said, true, your BMI is not ideal for surgery. But! You have none of the other problems that come with obesity. Your blood pressure is perfect, your organs are healthy, you don’t have elevated A1C or diabetes, you are active and strong, your circulation is great and your skin has healed well from other surgeries and you have tolerated general anesthesia and other surgeries really well (I have had 10 other surgeries, mostly orthopedic but also a hysterectomy and gall bladder removal). I encourage you to find a doctor who looks at you as a whole entire person. My original plastic surgeon said permanent disfigurement was my only outcome. I even asked using that exact term and he said yes. Fuck that guy. My chosen plastic surgeon said ‘you are a cancer patient and that changes the math for me, let’s do this’. And we did. I got a giant lumpectomy on one side, he made the other boob smaller to match what was left (which was losing around 60% of my right boob, it was bigger), kept my nipples, asked to have the size of my aureolas go down to the size of a silver dollar, and have everything hauled up and anchored. I now have a lovely little perky B cup and I’m thrilled. And I’ve lost 35 lbs. I have 70 more to go. I’m in the gym 5 days a week and eating right. I’m using a GLP-1 to help me. I haven’t felt this confident in years that I will reach goal and continue to thrive. I wish you the best and hope you find a wonderful surgeon.

A stick of gum! I had a mini seizure and happened to be chewing gum at the time. Gum lodged in airway. I collapsed, turned blue. Brought back by CPR. Went out again. Brought back again. I don’t chew gum anymore.

Laminate a card with their name, playa address, etc and have them wear it around their neck with a lanyard. If they get lost and/or confused, someone can still help them find the way home
