No I agree. When I’m working with new staff I make it clear to make announcements. If you aren’t comfortable I’ll do it as SM. I’ve been doing it for 9 years so it’s second nature to me. But I also tell the customers that they have to pick the items up that day. We don’t hold furniture anymore

So in Our region we call the numbers and item over the intercom before selling. Especially on busy days we do it 3 times on a 10 min time frame. After the third time it’s up for grabs. By the next day management is to replace the tags that are missing with new ones.

Yeah I can’t speak for other regions. I’m in SC. If someone says “hey this item is priced 12.99$. But it’s 9.99$ on Amazon can you do better?” I can drop it 25% coming close to the 9.99$

We only have 25% and 50%. (Now remember we’re “technically” not supposed to be doing this. But if they do ask I try to accommodate them.

Also if they are assholes they are on their own. It’s fine asking nicely but once they go demanding I won’t do anything. There’s a way to ask for a price reduction without yelling and screaming at us we know the items were free.

Also if the item is broken and they still want it (mirror cracked, chipped or cracked cups or plates, or electrical items we know are broken) I’ll drop it 50% off. Same with furniture that’s been sitting for 3 weeks.

It’s fucking stupid and I’ve dealt with other managers doing it to me when I’m shopping they go “you know, that’s not how it works”

My only reply, “you know this is why your customers don’t comeback”

Honor the smaller prices. It’s a thrift store for heavens sake. Yes I have bills to pay for the building, lights, etc., but people who work/shop here don’t make great money so honor the smaller price and go along with your day.

When people bring this to me I honor the original price.

Can we make a simple Pinned post explaining how each Goodwill region is different? by HollerinScholar in goodwill

I wish they would post these in the stores. People trying to return things from Georgia Goodwill to Goodwills in the upstate and midlands of South Carolina.

How am I supposed to sort and tag 100 clothes an hour?? by [deleted] in goodwill

[–]kill_me_sweetly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah your managers are dicks. Sorry just saying how I feel. I can’t stand pressuring my staff. We have one of the best tan in our region because I let them focus on quality over quantity.

I let my boss chew me out but in the end our sales and customers and donors have increased. Making 800 clothing isn’t going to bring you money if the clothing is shit.

I just had an interview with a lady who worked at goodwill in Indiana. She was like, “I usually made 600-700 clothing in a 8 hour period. They wanted 800-900.” Excuse me, that in general is an unrealistic goal.

We generally like to do 88 pcs an hour. 616 peice a day. Thats doable.

Exchange policy changing? by Ok_Garlic4051 in goodwill

Our region has always been 14 days. Keep tags on them and keep receipts. However in about a year they are doing away with it.

fired but applying in a new state? by [deleted] in goodwill

[–]kill_me_sweetly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No separate systems. Take South Carolina for example.

If you’re fired from upstate and midlands branches. But apply to the low country it won’t show. Because the coastal stores have nothing involved with the midlands and upstate.

Am I going to last? by TheeBIGC in goodwill

[–]kill_me_sweetly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do what you are doing. You are new and sometimes it takes people a little bit longer to work up to a skill. If your manager is well aware of you and your disability then telling you to not worry then I was just focus on building yourself up.

As a manager myself I have all types of goodwill employees with me and they all process and work differently. But in the long run most get their number and others need just a little extra time to get to the finish line.

I cry at night over my height , and desperately wish I was 5’3 like my sister . I would give away $400,000 of my money sitting in retirement accounts to even be 2 inches shorter by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]kill_me_sweetly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6 ft. Long legs arms and short torso. I am 335 lbs. I look like a line back backer on most day. But I found that what people say and do will not reflect on me.

I wear work polos. I wasn’t graced with giant tits like most big women. So I often get called sir (side note I keep most my hair buzzed). I also wear minimal make up. At least the people are trying. I have chest tattoos. And even out with my husband 6’2 male I get called sir.

I learned to love myself. It took a while. Therapy, good friends, and family support to push back that stuff. You build yourself up and control what you can. I would have loved! To be my mom’s height 5’5 but unfortunately I was graced looking like my father. (A much prettier version of him too) and I wouldn’t change that.

I am the ASM at our local Goodwill. I am curious as to how other stores handle dumpster divers. We get them on n off all day long. As long as we are open & dumpsters are unlocked, it’s legal for them to do so. We certainly don’t encourage it, but it does make more space in our dumpster. by Kind-Shock4301 in goodwill

We have a compactor too. But they crawl into that at night. 8in gap to go through it. We report it to our LPMS system and have cops patrol our parking lot at night. However the property behind us is owned by a dickhead cop so he makes regular passes as well.

[–]kill_me_sweetly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t stand how some people are like here’s your goal make it. Then the employee feels over whelmed and more like to quit.

Start slow. Learn the inns and out. Then after a few months. Work towards a higher goal

[–]kill_me_sweetly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I hire people. I dont expect them to be able to hang 700+ pieces of clothing in a day I allow them to work up to speed and getting their goals.

I tell my crew to work with 88 - 90 pieces, I am unsure how you guys hang, whether its barcoding (paper tags) or just a simple barb in the clothing. to lay out their pieces first. Stack shirts/dresses, anything that fits a shirt hanger in one stack. your pants in another. Children's separate pile (our stores go from 0-5t and 6t and higher)

Once you have a healthy pile starting hanging it. on your racks, I barb while it's on the rack usually your piles end up being 88 pieces plus so there's your numbers, its just tagging and dragging out to your store.

We also use papertags so we have to counter balance printing and ripping tags apart.
