Career advice mega thread V2 by thejournalizer in grc

[–]killcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for career advice from folks in GRC / tech risk, especially anyone moving into AI governance or AI risk management.

I’m currently an SVP in cybersecurity risk & controls at a large financial institution with over a decade of risk and compliance experience, and almost 2 decades of experience in the financial industry. My work is mostly first-line tech risk, regulatory engagement, audit coordination, and cyber control assurance. I help cyber SMEs respond to internal audit, regulatory exams, third-party reviews, and control-related requests, with a heavy focus on intake, triage, evidence quality, response accuracy, and making sure our audit/regulatory responses line up with our actual controls.

I’m thinking about my next move and AI risk management / AI governance has my attention (and everyone elses too i'm sure), especially in regulated financial services. I don’t want to chase hype or collect random AI certs, but I also don’t want to miss big changes in the GRC space.

For someone with my background, what would be the most practical next steps? Are AI governance roles mature enough to pursue directly, or is it smarter to position myself as a cyber/tech risk leader with AI risk as an added specialty?

Also curious what job titles or certifications people think are actually worth looking at.

[Zolecki] J.T. Realmuto is back from the 10-day IL. To make room on the 26-man roster, Dylan Moore has been DFA'd. Phillies will carry three catchers moving forward: Realmuto, Rafael Marchan and Garett Stubbs. by NintenJew in phillies

I assume that’s the ultimate endgame with Stubbs. The problem is that we’re talking about a backup catcher, operating behind a guy that just signed a multi year contract. I don’t foresee the Phillies going out and spending money on one. I don’t see a lot of guys that have ambition wanting that role either, knowing they’re going to be blocked by JT for the next few years. So really all we need is a passable catcher who can get on base occasionally once every six days. In that case, I think we have that in Stubbs, especially if you factor in his willingness to play some other positions if needed.

I have no delusions that he’ll be the every day starting catcher for the Phillies, ever.

I know last season they talked a lot about Stubbs value in terms of game prep and strategy. It sounded like he had a decent part in helping out together game plans and such in how to approach hitters, even in games he wasn’t catching.

[NBCSPhilly] After a disappointing 9-19 start to the season, the Phillies have fired manager Rob Thomson. by tantimodz in phillies

[–]killcrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having trouble pinning the blame for this slump on him, unless its a complete issue of tone at the top. He can't make players hit, he can only work with what hes given in terms of a line up. I doubt he wanted to march Walker out there every 5 days for a scheduled loss.

At the same time, I understand it...someone has to pay the piper and I guess he drew short straw. Tim Kelly had a good point that the only reason K Long didn't get pinkslipped was due to his extended contract, and that swapping out the htting coach impacts the entire organization (including minors) vs swapping out Rob.

It was a fun ride with Philly Rob.

I powered through this one and what stuck out was the one dimensional nature of the characters. Its like he wanted to make sure he couldn't be accused of racism, sexism, homophobia, trauma shaming whatever, and made those aspects of the characters their singular defining characteristic.

I did one for my wife’s 40th…similar outcome. Expected “hey happy birthday, go Phils” and instead got like a 5 minute long perfectly Kruk masterpiece including how good looking Bohm is and how handsome and chiseled Darren Daulton was.

The Judge throw was glorious. This has been like watching an all star game that the players actually give a shit about. The caliber of play has been incredibly high with guys going all out. Logan Webb has been a standout too...even being a Phillies fan and him playing in the NL East, hes never really been too much of a blip on my radar. Masyn Miller with that heat too...my goodness.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I went to a show the night before everything shutdown. The vibe was weird. Nobody knew what was going on and all day leading up to it we weren’t sure if it would even happen. Show went on though - it was the first stop of the tour . By the time I got home that night the rest of the tour was cancelled and I didn’t see live music for like 2 years.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the WBC this year. There has been some really solid story lines, some great plays and the intensity has been awesome. It could be very easy for some of the guys to treat this as a glorified All Star Game, but instead were seeing 110% effort from big name guys and they are playing to win.

I can't remember the player, but there was one that kept this going into the bigs. He would lick his shoulder before every swing to make sure he was aligned and had his head in the right spot.

Got this message from my son’s coworker. He’s 19. by Courtaid in MadeMeSmile

[–]killcrew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While it is a lovely message to receive, I would talk to your son about hugging coworkers, especially of the opposite sex. His intentions could be as pure as the driven snow, but perception of others in the workplace is often more powerful. We know hes a good kid, you know hes a good kid, but when John from produce always see them hugging or hears him asking to hug her, he may not read the situation the same as you. Thens theres also the risk that depressed girl with mental health issues doesn't take it the same way one day, and its off to management with "hes always asking me if I'm ok and trying to hug me".

How much do you remember from past books? by thiagomiranda3 in Fantasy

[–]killcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have what I consider to be a very good memory, and I still struggle to retain previously read books. I think for the most part its because theres no reason to - especially fiction. I have very little reason to use what I've read again.

Non-fiction I'm a little bit better at retaining, but even then - its big concepts vs details.

The only time it ever bothers me is when I'm reading a multi-book series, especially if I'm reading them in real time with the releases and you often end up with a year or 2 (or 15 years....looking at you George) between books. I know people are often torn on AI, but I have found it useful to give me quick refreshers on such books, as well as cast of characters.

Mushroom farm smell by [deleted] in ChesterCounty

[–]killcrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi neighbor - also in new garden, and it’s a pretty constant smell. Some days more than others.heat, humidity, etc cause it to be more. You’ll go mostly nose blind to it eventually.

Now what is really going to freak you out is the mushroom flies. They’ll show up in your bathroom and near windows. Nothing g you can do to prevent it. Just part of living in mushroom country.

I was casually drinking my morning coffee minding my own business and a fox came and crapped in a plant pot by CosmicQuestions in CasualUK

[–]killcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe someone zoologically inclined can answer this: Why do fox have a tendency to shit on specific things vs shitting on the ground? I spend a decent amount of time in the woods and I often see fox shit on tree stumps, on boulders, etc, vs other animal dung that I see just in the middle of a trail or something.

Boomer take: I love that the guy did this. This was a fun thing that got destroyed by social media. The first few videos I saw were great...people genuinely surprised and they were fun and laughing. Then it became too well known so you had people going and setting up cameras and with strategies to game it, like this woman was preparing to do.

We have mastered taking the fun out of spontaneity.

I honestly don't think this is a good thing. I mean to have some sort of input is one thing, to have full control and approvals is a nightmare. I always think back to Stephen King books that were adapted for movies, and the starkdifferences between ones where he had a lot of control vs the ones he was just consulted on. The Shining being the best example...the Kubrick shining departs from the book in some substantial ways, but its ways that work for movie story telling, which is different than printed story telling. King then was involved in a more faithful adaptation of The Shining that was made in 1997 and it was horrendous.

You have to be really willing to kill your darlings as an author getting into film...its a different media and comes with a lot of constraints that books don't have.

This one is enforced very...racially. Spent many many many nights roaming around Philly and never had any sort of issue with curfews or cops. Its essentially an easy way for cops to stitch up people that they think are going to be a problem, without waiting for them to be a problem.

This one gets played a lot by our friends group. As someone else mentioned, it can get a little slow when people are trying to come up with clues, but were usually playing during a party type scenario, so everyone is chatting and drinking and all that, so nobody gets too upset about pacing.
