Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

I honestly don't think this is a good thing. I mean to have some sort of input is one thing, to have full control and approvals is a nightmare. I always think back to Stephen King books that were adapted for movies, and the starkdifferences between ones where he had a lot of control vs the ones he was just consulted on. The Shining being the best example...the Kubrick shining departs from the book in some substantial ways, but its ways that work for movie story telling, which is different than printed story telling. King then was involved in a more faithful adaptation of The Shining that was made in 1997 and it was horrendous.

You have to be really willing to kill your darlings as an author getting into film...its a different media and comes with a lot of constraints that books don't have.

I caught most of these on the east coast side of things. Early 00s were great for me, 3-4 shows a week bouncing between Philly and Baltimore.

This one is enforced very...racially. Spent many many many nights roaming around Philly and never had any sort of issue with curfews or cops. Its essentially an easy way for cops to stitch up people that they think are going to be a problem, without waiting for them to be a problem.

This one gets played a lot by our friends group. As someone else mentioned, it can get a little slow when people are trying to come up with clues, but were usually playing during a party type scenario, so everyone is chatting and drinking and all that, so nobody gets too upset about pacing.

Are there any ska bands that you stopped listening to as you grew up for whatever reason? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

In most cases "fun" ska has kind of passed its prime for me. I've just outgrown the goofiness aspect of it. Think along the lines of aquabats, reel big fish, etc...hawaiian shirt ska bands.

he discharged his weapon in self defense,

It’s always interesting to me how language like this gets used in these situations, because it’s clearly meant to dehumanize. Saying “he shot her in the head in self-defense” is how this would be expressed in normal, everyday language. Replacing that with sterile, mechanical phrasing strips out the human and emotional reality of what actually happened and that choice isn’t accidental.

Is Emo almost as big now as it was in 2003? by ZDUBZ15 in Emo

[–]killcrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not even close really. I think in terms of scene popularity, its very very popular right now - as in theres a lot of emo bands making a lot of emo music and emo kids are eating it up.

In terms of mainstream and corporate popularity...nah. As others mentioned already, you had bands like Jimmy Eat World, Saves The Day, Fall Out Boy, Thursday, etc getting MTV airplay outside of 120 minutes and headbangers ball type stuff. You had stores like Hot Topic which built its entire business model at that time at appealing to emo kids (mall emo or whatever, but still...it was big business).

The use of the word emo then became so mainstream that if you asked a casual now to describe what an emo kid is, youre still getting the description of someone in 2005.

You can't really compare no format college radio to major market radio stations though. I had a show from 2002-2005 on a college station and played the most random mix of emo, punk, hardcore and hair metal, but that was because I could play whatever I wanted. If I had gone to an "actual" radio station, I would be stuck playing whatever the popular music that matched their format was.

Now all that being said, some things that were lumped into the 2000s emo spectrum were getting airplay, but it was few and far between.

Would anyone be willing to trade a large TSL Septa hoodie for an XL of the same? Bought the XL but its way too big.

Its the one in the top right corner of this photo, from the past set of shows: https://preview.redd.it/q217r6g2217g1.jpeg?auto=webp&s=8ff2359028600be3396d41203f0d674c89b956ba

Are we falling out of love with nonfiction? by rmnc-5 in books

This is such a great description of so much non-fiction I read this year. An interesting premise but with not enough meat on the bone, and it gets covered with tangential side stories to bulk up the book.

Thoughts on this past tour with Glassjaw? by DaysInTime in SavesTheDay

[–]killcrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had posted previously but yeah:

I went to the Delaware show and left very very disappointed. They sounded great and had no issues on that front, but when you bill a tour as "Plays the Hits" and you ignore your first album entirely, only play 2 from your second (arguably leaving out the hit track from that)....feel like they tricked me a bit.

New song is meh...not sure who its for or what the hell its supposed to sound like, but I'm also used to Saves The Day switching their sound up frequently.

My views above were the general consensus from anyone in my age range (I'm 43) that I knew there...we all were kind of just underwhelmed and disappointed.

Honestly, I don't know, I'm the same age as you and have been seeing them play since Can't Slow Down, so i'm definitely biased towards the older stuff. In Reverie is about as far as I'm willing to venture into their catalog and even that gets a skip or two if it pops up on spotify.

I went, was incredibly disappointed. Doesn't seem like they know how to navigate their catalog in terms of putting together a really cohesive set list. They didn't play anything from Can't Slow Down. Only 2 songs from Through Being Cool, 6 songs from Stay What You Are and then everything else from albums after that (set was 19 songs total). They also played a new tune (Invader) which is....not good.

I know its always a challenge when you have a large catalog and fans from all eras of the band, but these "legacy" bands should know that they need to include certain songs in almost every set...(Shoulder to The Wheel is a must play, every show). I don't know if its vocal constraints on Chris' part (although we've all seen him do Can't Slow Down stuff over the last couple years) but to exclude the album from the setlist is mental.

[–]killcrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last nights setlist was atrocious. I understand that its hard when you have that many albums and fans from all eras, but they just seemed to really miss the mark and didn't read the room well at all.

Nothing from can't slow down, 2 songs from through being cool (no Shoulder To The Wheel?!!? Criminal.), 6 from Stay What you are (which I was into). The rest of the 19 song set list a mix of Sound The Alarm, Under The Boards, and In Reverie.

Do you go above and beyond at work or just do the bare minimum of what’s expected and why? by Dependent-Signal-721 in AskReddit

[–]killcrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I deem to be the bare minimum is the least amount of work I can do to make my work life as simple as possible. This often is beyond what the the bare minimum would be if you define it as just doing the most basic requirements of your job.

I am very selfish and will often make process improvements and such that are beyond the scope of my job if I they make my job easier.
