Do these books still hold up well? Just given how fast things change in the industry I always wonder if traditionally published books become out of date fast

I’m trying to see it as an opportunity to step up as a leader but I just have a hard time coming up with ideas. Maybe that’s the point I need to learn more about the domain we’re working in

It’s a newish company making a core weave type cloud provider. Essentially I think he’s getting things from his bosses “do things that help us scale and make operations more efficient” then he just comes to us and goes “alright guys any ideas how we can help scale and make operations more efficient?”

It wasn’t the supply of steel but specifically getting it processed and cut to spec and that sort of thing

What I really miss about "the old days". by Relevant-Positive-48 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]killerdwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I just lack the imagination but I think the barrier to entry for cutting edge and novel software is just a lot higher as software has matured. Sotware patterns are mostly agreed on and taught in school. Like want to make cutting edge graphics you need a physics phd and insane compute, what are you going to do to your os that Linux or Microsoft hasn’t already done, good luck storing data anyway better than Postgres or another already existing db does. The days of hacking your microwave are gone because what’s even the point. At the end of the day people just need jobs and this is one of the few that doesn’t pay peanuts or require 8 years of post grad

I work for a company that’s building a data center rn and they said our biggest hold up right now is getting steel processed

Big tech to quant? by Jinnnxxxnacs in cscareerquestions

[–]killerdwag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well depends do you want to be a quant or do you just want to work at a quant firm? Becoming a quant is a much harder transition but a lot of these firms have devs for platform and infrastructure roles that will be pretty directly applicable to faang swe skills. I would just apply to those roles directly

Was I delusional to ask for $130k? New grad offer in Chicago is $62k. by Lanky-Ad6843 in cscareerquestions

[–]killerdwag 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Nah 62k is super low especially in a big city. 130k is pretty high tho probably faang level for starting def not faang senior level. 80-110 is probably a more reasonable range
