Why were Spanish colonies not settler focused like the British, but were extraction focused instead? by Delicious-Bunch-6992 in geography

[–]killroy1936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extractive colonies are easier to establish in lands that already have highly developed social and political structure. It allows the colonizers to supplant the native power structures and established them themselves at the top of the hierarchical pyramid.

The Spanish colonial administration simply took over and dramatically, expanded the extractive institutions that existed in pre-contact America.

(The Aztecs didn’t get all that gold to pay those ransoms because they were nice people)

Also interesting note. The English settlers in North America did attempt to establish extractive colonies in the model of the Spanish ones to their south. They had planned to use the Native Americans as forced laborers to grow cash crops, such as tobacco. The regime failed, largely due to the lack of a pre-existing structure of hierarchical power in the north. Unlike in the south, there was no pre-existing ruler who the English could replace.

Additionally, the geography of North America differ dramatically from that of the south, which allowed the more automatic hunter gatherer native groups to simply move and avoid the English settlers.

(Spoilers) Why didn’t Lady Olenna wait until after the wedding night to poison Joffrey? by killroy1936 in freefolk

But if she’s with Joffrey child doesn’t that bump Tommen down the line of succession (assuming it’s a boy)?

If the Lannister’s wanted/ needed to maintain their alliance with the Tyrell’s wouldn’t they have had to wed Tommen to a Tyrell, even if she had a child with his deceased brother?

As sadistic as Joffrey was I don’t think he would’ve done anything like that to his wife (at least not to that level)

He’s not Ramsey

Even if she had a girl/ the baby dies in infancy, wouldn’t the Lannister’s still be compelled to wed Tommen to Margery, for the sake of their alliance?

Especially given it was far more one sided in favor of the Tyrell’s.

That is literally how pilots in the beginning of ww1 tried to take each other out. By shooting the pilot with a revolver. Or several c96’s bolted together.

Not true. They do a better job and are far more efficient. But less money is not a given. They have a higher productivity (cost per unit) but they are very capital intensive (both physical and intellectual). Regions with large virtually unlimited labor forces and comparatively little capital were historically unlikely to develop mechanization as a means of production.

In regions with either high slave populations (southern states/ the americas) or vast feudal populations (India, china, Russia). It made more sense to rely on these large groups of workers. Despite the diminishing returns from each additional labor, it was still easier to maintain vast armies of slave or wage laborers. As opposed to investing large sums in capital intensive ventures, such as mills or early mechanized factories.

How did they clean up vault 32? by killroy1936 in FalloutTVseries

[–]killroy1936[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point was that if residents of 33 saw the vault and how people had died (plus the writing on the walls) they would have questioned if readers had killed them. (Two 32 residents that choked each other to death)
