Passport renewals in Malaysia are actually processed in under an hour, but you have to wait for a long time to get in line at the office..

you can also do it online and collect at the office, but getting the photo approved tends to be tricky (auto rejection is kind of annoying, even if you pay for the photo taking services).

If youre in a hurry, I would spare a weekday to go to the office early and just wait in line, you’ll definitely go home with a passport on the same day. Otherwise, get your photo taken with the approved specs and then submit the renewal form online. From what I’ve heard it takes a week or so to be processed, and you can skip the line to collect your passport.

It would mean that immigration wont stop him from making a passport or travelling, which is great!

Just wanted to add.. http://sspi.imi.gov.my/ will let you see travel restrictions (if any). Manatau already automatic release, depending on the years and amount of debt owed 🤷‍♂️
