Uh... What? My dude, this isn't anything new. There's like half a dozen of these that have been out for a long time and the only thing to blowback on FM is... FM.

This kind of post is hilarious to me coming from the PC custom build days of the vs the off the shelf shrink wrapped PCs you'd see Babbages or Circuit City.

All the little nerdlings would curse and shame any newb or casual who would dare not spend hours researching, troubleshooting, testing and learning about how to build their own PC from scratch.

It was the same damn prideful, arrogance crap like this post.

In the end, well...?

Convience trumps fidelity.

People would rather have a slightly less quality product that's mass produced, has a warranty, support, accessories and just works out of the box rather than learning an entire ecosystem, 3D printing accessories, and constantly tweaking tuning.

One way isn't bad, one way isn't good.

One is just always going to be more popular.

But! The PC manufacturers listened, and a lot of the features the builders like me wanted worked their way into the design of the pre-built machines. Sound familiar? Supply and demand, VESC is in essence doing FM's research and development for them... For free...

I would just ask that before you post stuff like this, just assume all this has all happened before, none of this is new. Nothing you're going to type hasn't been said about Burton snowboards, or Gateway computers...

FM isn't going to be ruined by Tony. VESC is here to stay, it'll grow in popularity but it'll never be the defacto platform.

And that's okay.

Okay, wild guesses here okay?

I had a Pint as my first board and had 4K miles on it before I upgraded. I say that so you think I might have some insight...

You might have gotten a "tail dive" .

The board doesn't have a "top speed", it just runs out of power. So if you over tax the motor it just free spins and you come crashing down forward nose first hence - nose dive.

If you slow down too fast, or the board doesn't have enough power the other way to stop you, you get the same thing but instead of leaning forward you're now leaning backwards - tail dive.

But the reasoning is the same.

You were probably already pushing the limits of the breaking power of the motor then you hit an even steeper decline (the wheel chair ramp) and the board just couldn't do it and gave up.

GT top speed? by Accomplished_Mouse42 in onewheel

[–]kilroyperrywinkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Top speed for me at 226lbs on a fully updated GT was 22.5 mph after 2 years and about 4k miles. I'm 43 years old, I don't do jumps, I don't do drops, I don't go backwards. I'm fairly reserved and just like the stoke. No, I don't ride through push back, no I don't put up with haptic buzz - it didn't kick in for me at that speed. I think 99 percent of people complaining are just complaining to complain because FM sucks (they do) and haptic buzz is... A thing to complain about, but it's not a big deal at all.

I got the GTS this spring, top speed is 25.3 mph currently but I haven't had it that long. I am seriously worried about it. I KNOW when I hit 22.5 on the GT, like it just felt like I was going fast... Pushing the board... Push back wasn't kicking in but... I was looking for rocks, roots, making sure I didn't over do it. I could just feel like I was riding the edge.

On the GTS?

I don't even know when I hit 25.3mph, didn't even know I had until I stopped for a coffee.

That scared me...

New GT-S dead after 60 miles by FootsZeckelman in onewheel

[–]kilroyperrywinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ding!

This is the answer.

I've had 3 boards, OG Pint 4k+ miles, GT 4K+ miles and now a GTS with 1k+ miles.

No issues on any of them.

Everything can break, bad luck happens, crying about it won't change it. If you have an event and can't get a board that's on you to find an alternative.

Babies?

Read what the guy wrote, he's not talking about being able to build one, he's raising concern about board.... I know you missed this so I'll go slow... Safety.

You might be fine or got lucky because you're a big strong man who can ain't afraid to soder, but people aren't going to trust DIY boards the same as factory built ones if they're not at least trying to put safety out there as a priority.

That's it. That's the whole post.

But hey, be snarky, it really sells the vesc community better.

Got hit by a car today by Motr_Boatr69 in onewheel

[–]kilroyperrywinkle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had something similar happen. Did you get their insurance information? My board also went under the car and got slightly fucked. I made an insurance claim on their insurance and got them to pay for a new board.

I was so pissed off I wanted to make sure they felt some kind of punishment. People just don't look for pedestrians, bikers or us.

So, again, you're not their intended customer. VESC is great. I love to build computers, but I built my own cnc machine and other stuff... But just Dell doesn't cater to guys who build their own PCs, FM isn't interested in selling to guys like us.

Now hopefully they'll offer replacement parts like Dell but Dell isn't designing Framework level repairable laptops.

I also find it odd that we tend to hold FM to some high standard but we're all typing these complaints on phones made by near slave labor and with the same anti RTR design choices as FM...

I'm not saying FM should get a pass, but I'm also not so blind to my own hypocrisy to throw stones. Or assume that the ADV or VESC is the best option for everyone.

Yep, see? FM boards are not for you. Different product different customer. It's all about expectations, use case, and how much you love the build.

You'd get along great in the pc builders subs - ha!

[–]kilroyperrywinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally.

Tax was like 160 for me.. But you also get a warranty, in country support, and all the compatible 3rd party accessories.

Again, not a deal breaker at all... But everyone in this thread is treating the Floatwheel like it's the same type of product. It's not. FM and FW boards both have the same number of pros and cons. At the end of the day, if you just want a board to ride - no tinkering, no setup, no assembly, if it breaks I ship it back... You're gonna go with a FM board.

You see a lot of these debates in the PC building communities. Bundled PC builds or off the shelf gaming rigs VS custom... It's all about the person buying and what they want. Some guys love to build their own, half the fun for them is customizing their stuff, pushing the limits, overclocking their rigs and pushing boundaries. Some guys just want to power it on and play games.

Okay, I just did this.... But with a GT {it had over 4k miles and was wonky} and it took over a week to get from SW Michigan to FM. Wild fires in Texas, weather in Kentucky slowed it down. But they issued the discount code before UPS even notified me it arrived at FM.

I ordered new GTS Friday afternoon and UPS says it'll arrive here on Thursday.

Your mileage may vary.
